Square Invoices serves two different payment needs: a business can pay for a Square plan that includes invoicing, while a customer can pay an invoice that business sends. This guide covers both ways to use a Coinepay virtual card, including what to check before checkout and how to respond if a payment is declined.
Know which payment you are making
If you run a business, you may be choosing a paid Square subscription to access invoicing features. If you received an invoice by email or text, you are paying the seller for its goods or services—not subscribing to Square Invoices. The seller controls the invoice amount, due date, accepted payment methods and any deposit or payment schedule.
Square’s plan names depend on the country. In the United States, invoicing is included in Square Free, Square Plus and Square Premium; Square Pro has custom pricing for eligible businesses. At the time of writing (October 2026), Square lists the US plans at $0, $49 per month per location and $149 per month per location, respectively. Square Plus and Premium offer 30-day trials. Square also documents a separate legacy subscription called Square Invoices Plus. Do not confuse that name with the US Square Plus plan; check Square’s official Invoices pricing page for your current options.
In Canada, Australia, the UK and Ireland, Square lists Square Invoices Free and Square Invoices Plus, with a 30-day Plus trial. Localized plan names are Factures Square Gratuit and Factures Square Plus in France, Facturas Square Gratuito and Facturas Square Plus in Spain, and Square 請求書 フリー and Square 請求書 プラス in Japan. Prices and available features vary by market; review your country’s official Square Invoices pricing page before selecting a plan.
What you need before you start
- An eligible Square account or a valid invoice: Sellers should sign up in a country where Square offers seller card processing and use their real business and billing information. If you are a buyer, open the invoice sent by the seller and check its payment terms.
- A Coinepay account: Register for Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. You can manage your card in the Coinepay app or 24/7 self-service dashboard.
- Your card details and sufficient available funds: Coinepay issues a virtual card with a card number, expiry date and CVV. Check the applicable plan charge or invoice total, and confirm your available funds in Coinepay before attempting payment.
- Accurate billing information: Enter your real name and the billing address associated with your card. Keep access to any verification prompt that may appear during checkout.
Square lists seller card-processing availability in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, UK, Ireland, France and Spain. A seller must process payments in the country where its Square account was activated, although international customers can pay Square invoices. Payments are processed in the Square account country’s currency. These rules are not a reason to change your location or billing details to another country.
How to sign up and pay for a Square plan
- Choose the plan for your market. Visit Square’s official Invoices pricing page for your country. Compare the free and paid options, the listed trial terms and what will be charged when a trial ends. In the US, choose among the current Square Free, Square Plus and Square Premium options rather than assuming the legacy Square Invoices Plus subscription is the same product.
- Create or access your Square account. Select Get started from the pricing page to reach Square account registration, or sign in to your existing Square account. Provide genuine business and account information and follow the eligibility steps Square presents.
- Get your Coinepay card details. After registering and completing identity verification with Coinepay, open your card in the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app. Copy its number, expiry date and CVV carefully.
- Review the payment-method screen. Follow Square’s prompts for the chosen subscription or trial. Square lists a bank account and a credit card as subscription-payment options. If Square offers a card-entry option for your account, enter your Coinepay card details and your real billing information. Do not assume your virtual card will meet every subscription-payment requirement: confirm eligibility with Coinepay support before you buy if the card-type requirement is unclear.
- Confirm the terms. Check the plan name, location count if applicable, amount, trial end date and billing frequency displayed by Square. Submit only when those details are correct, and keep the confirmation for your records.
To review a trial, bill or subscription payment method later, go to Settings → Account & Settings → Pricing & subscriptions in Square Dashboard. That area also lets you manage your plan. If you are setting up invoices for customers, you can create them in Square Dashboard, the Invoices app or a supported Point of Sale app: add the customer and invoice details, choose the accepted methods and any deposit or payment schedule, then preview and send or schedule the invoice.
How to pay an invoice sent through Square
- Open the invoice you received by email or text and select Pay Invoice. Confirm that the seller, amount, currency and invoice details match what you agreed to pay.
- Choose the card option if the seller has enabled it. For card checkout, enter your Coinepay card number, expiry and CVV, along with your real billing details where requested.
- Review the total and complete any checkout verification that appears. Keep the receipt or confirmation from Square, and check your Coinepay activity for the corresponding payment.
The payment choices on an invoice depend on the seller’s settings. In the US, Square may present options such as cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Cash App Pay, ACH bank transfer, Afterpay or the seller’s Square Gift Card. Those alternatives have their own checkout flows; they are not instructions for entering virtual card details. A card issued abroad may also lead to an additional international-card fee charged through Square’s processing arrangements, while a buyer’s card issuer may charge for currency conversion. Review the amount you are asked to authorize.
Troubleshoot a declined card
For an invoice, Square documents a “card was not accepted” error. It does not receive the issuer’s exact decline reason, so start with the checks below rather than assuming one cause. Avoid repeated attempts without changing or verifying anything: Square may cancel an invoice after too many unsuccessful attempts, in which case you can ask the seller to issue a new one.
- Insufficient available funds: Compare the funds available on your Coinepay card with the full charge shown at checkout, including any applicable currency conversion or other amount displayed. Check the card’s activity for pending charges. If you need help understanding the available balance or a pending transaction, contact Coinepay support.
- Incorrect card or billing details: Re-enter the card number, expiry date and CVV from your Coinepay card. Check the ZIP or postal code and make sure the billing address is your real address associated with the card. Square specifically recommends checking these details for its invoice card error.
- 3-D Secure or bank verification: Square has introduced optional 3D Secure verification at checkout for larger invoices paid with a card new to the seller’s account. If a verification prompt appears, follow its instructions and finish the authentication before returning to checkout. If it fails or never completes, contact Coinepay support with the approximate time and amount; do not try to bypass the check.
- Merchant or regional checks: Square processes payments in the seller account’s country and currency, and an international customer may still pay an invoice. That does not mean every card or transaction will be approved. Ask the seller whether card payments are enabled on this invoice; for card eligibility or a suspected issuer-side decline, contact Coinepay support. Use your real location and billing information throughout.
If the problem is a Square subscription charge rather than an invoice payment, check the payment method and bill in Pricing & subscriptions. If you are paying someone else’s invoice, the seller—not the buyer—controls its accepted methods and can help with a canceled invoice or an alternative payment option.
Manage charges, cancellation and refunds
To change a Square subscription payment method or unsubscribe, use Settings → Account & Settings → Pricing & subscriptions. Under Square’s US terms, access continues through the current billing period after cancellation, and subscription fees already due or paid receive no refund or credit. Review the terms shown for your country and plan before confirming changes.
For a purchase paid through a Square invoice, ask the seller about a cancellation or refund; the seller decides whether to issue a full or partial refund under its terms. Square permits refunds of Square-processed payments within one year of the transaction and says receipt of a refund can take 4–14 business days. If you need help identifying the original card transaction or a refund on your Coinepay card, contact Coinepay support.

In Square Dashboard, go to Settings → Account & Settings → Pricing & subscriptions and look for the subscription payment-method controls.
Can I pay a Square invoice with my Coinepay virtual card?
You can enter your Coinepay card details if the seller enables card payment on the invoice. Approval depends on the checkout and card checks; it is not guaranteed.
What should I do if Square says my card was not accepted?
Check your available funds, card number, expiry, CVV and real billing ZIP or postal code. Complete any verification prompt, then contact Coinepay support if the payment still fails. Ask the seller for a new invoice if repeated failures caused cancellation.
