Sending money from abroad to someone who uses a Mexican mobile wallet starts with checking how that wallet receives payments. SPEI is Mexico’s interbank payment system, not a wallet or an international transfer service. This guide explains how to collect the right recipient details, check the payout options in Coinepay Global Remittance, and follow up if the money does not appear.
How SPEI relates to a mobile-wallet payout
Sistema de Pagos Electrónicos Interbancarios (SPEI) moves Mexican-peso payments between accounts at participating financial institutions in Mexico. A wallet can receive a SPEI payment only if its provider offers an eligible account through a participant or indirect participant. Having a wallet app on a phone does not, by itself, mean the wallet can receive SPEI payments.
A transfer you initiate outside Mexico is not a SPEI transaction from end to end. It is a cross-border transfer that may involve a separate local payout in Mexico. Check the payout methods shown for your transfer in the Coinepay app or dashboard; do not assume that a method labeled “mobile wallet” uses SPEI, or that a particular Mexican wallet is available.
Ask the recipient to open their wallet’s receiving instructions and confirm that the account can receive transfers in Mexican pesos. If the wallet provides instructions for bank transfers rather than mobile-wallet payouts, select the matching method in Coinepay if it is available. The details required on screen depend on the payout method offered.
What details should you get from the recipient?
Collect the recipient’s full name exactly as registered with their receiving institution or wallet. Ask them to copy their payment details from the wallet rather than recalling a number from memory. Depending on the receiving provider and the method available in Coinepay, those details may include:
- An account identifier: Often an 18-digit CLABE for a Mexican account. Banco de México also describes a 16-digit debit or electronic-payment-funds card number as a possible account identifier. Use only an identifier that both the recipient’s provider and the available payout form accept.
- The receiving institution: Get the institution name if it appears in the wallet’s receiving instructions or is requested in the payout form.
- A registered mobile number: Dinero Móvil (Dimo) can identify an account by a 10-digit Mexican mobile number, but only when the recipient has consented to link that number to their account. An ordinary contact number is not automatically a payment address. Use a phone number only if the offered payout method accepts it and the recipient confirms it is registered for receiving payments.
Do not substitute a phone number for a CLABE or another account identifier just because the recipient uses a mobile app. Dimo phone-number payments and Cobro Digital (CoDi) QR-code or payment-notification requests are different ways to initiate payments. A CoDi QR code is not an account ID to enter into a remittance form.
Before you send, ask the recipient to check whether their account can accept the intended payment. Wallet providers may apply account, transaction, or security restrictions, and the recipient’s verification status may affect what they can receive. The recipient should check their own provider’s current receiving instructions and complete any required account verification. There is no single set of wallet rules that applies to every SPEI-enabled account.
How to set up the transfer in Coinepay
- Open Coinepay Global Remittance. Sign in through the Coinepay mobile app or self-service dashboard. If you are new to Coinepay, register and complete any identity verification requested before proceeding.
- Choose Mexico as the destination. Enter the amount you want to send and review the available payout methods. Select a SPEI-related account payout or mobile-wallet option only if it is offered for this transfer and matches the recipient’s receiving instructions. If the expected option does not appear, do not pick a different method and enter the same details without checking first.
- Enter the recipient’s details. Use their registered full name and the identifier requested by the form, such as an eligible account ID or a registered phone number where that option is supported. Enter the receiving institution if requested. Check every digit against the details the recipient supplied.
- Review the transfer before confirming. Check the destination, recipient name, identifier, payout method, and amount the recipient is expected to receive. Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees before you confirm. Read the estimated arrival time shown for your transfer rather than assuming that Mexico’s domestic SPEI processing time applies to the entire cross-border journey.
- Confirm and track it. Submit the transfer only when the details are correct. Follow its status in Coinepay’s app or dashboard, and keep its reference information in case you need help.
If the payout options do not clearly match the wallet’s receiving instructions, pause and contact Coinepay support. Support can help you check the options presented for your transfer. Neither a wallet’s ability to receive a domestic SPEI payment nor a recipient’s registered phone number establishes that it is an available Coinepay payout method.
How does the recipient see the money arrive?
The recipient should check the receiving account or wallet associated with the identifier you entered. If the payout is made to an account, the receiving institution credits that account, and the recipient may see the incoming payment in their transaction history or balance. What the entry looks like, and whether the provider sends a notification, depends on that provider. Ask the recipient to check the actual account rather than relying solely on a notification.
SPEI runs around the clock, but a “sent” status is not the same as confirmation that funds are visible to the recipient. Likewise, a Coinepay transfer can include steps outside Mexico’s domestic payment system. Use the status tracking in Coinepay and the estimated arrival time shown before confirmation; ask the recipient to check their receiving account if the transfer appears to have progressed.
For a payment that actually used SPEI for its local leg, Banco de México’s MI SPEI service may help check the domestic payment status when the necessary date, tracking key or numeric reference, and institution details are available. A SPEI status of “liquidated” indicates that the receiving institution has been notified; it does not, on its own, prove that the recipient can already see the funds in a wallet. A Comprobante Electrónico de Pago (CEP) is available when the receiving institution has confirmed the credit. Coinepay’s remittance reference may not be the same as a SPEI tracking key, so ask support which details are available before trying to trace a local payment.
Troubleshooting a missing or unsuccessful payout
Wrong number or account ID
If you have not confirmed the transfer, correct the identifier first. For a phone-number option, ask the recipient to verify that the number is linked to the intended receiving account. A number that is not registered for Dimo cannot be used for a phone-number-only Dimo payment. If you have already confirmed a transfer with the wrong details, check its status and contact Coinepay support promptly with the transfer reference. Do not assume that changing the contact information in your phone will change a submitted payment.
Name mismatch
Compare the name you entered with the recipient’s name as registered with their wallet or financial institution, including the order of names where relevant. If a name or any recipient details displayed during review do not match, stop before confirming and obtain the correct details. For a submitted transfer, give support the reference and explain the mismatch; do not submit a second transfer merely to test a different spelling.
Wallet restriction or incomplete verification
The receiving provider may restrict what an account can accept, and its rules may differ by verification status. Ask the recipient to review their wallet’s receiving instructions, account status, and any notice about the incoming payment. They should complete required verification with their provider rather than trying another person’s account. If the account cannot receive this type of payout, check which other legitimate payout methods Coinepay offers for the destination.
Transfer under review or not showing in the wallet
Cross-border transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening, and local regulations. Coinepay may request documents about the purpose of a transfer or the source of funds. Respond through the requested channel and monitor the transfer status. If the status suggests a local payment was sent but the recipient cannot see it, contact support with your Coinepay reference and ask the recipient to check their account history. A rejected, cancelled, or returned payment should not be treated as a completed wallet credit.
Coinepay sends cross-border transfers to destinations except jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions and screens customers and counterparties. Availability of any particular payout method depends on the options shown for your transfer. Check those options and the recipient’s wallet instructions before confirming a payment.

FAQ
Is SPEI a Mexican mobile wallet?
No. SPEI is Mexico’s interbank payment system for Mexican-peso transfers. A wallet needs an eligible receiving account to accept a SPEI payment.
Can I send to any Mexican phone number?
No. A phone-number payment requires an offered method that accepts phone numbers. For Dimo, the recipient must have consented to link their 10-digit Mexican mobile number to their account.
What if my recipient has a CLABE instead of a registered phone number?
Ask for their registered full name, CLABE, and receiving institution, then choose an available payout method that accepts those account details. Do not enter the CLABE into a phone-number field.
Where can I check the exchange rate and fees?
Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees in the app or dashboard before you confirm the transfer.
What should I do if Coinepay says sent but the wallet shows nothing?
Ask the recipient to check their receiving account history, then contact Coinepay support with your transfer reference. A sent status alone does not confirm that the wallet has been credited.
