SendGrid, part of Twilio, is an email delivery and marketing platform used for transactional email and campaigns. If you manage your budget with a Coinepay virtual card, this guide walks through what you need, how SendGrid's sign-up and checkout work, and how to troubleshoot a declined card. Before you start, make sure you have completed Coinepay registration and identity verification (KYC) so your card is active. You can sign up at Coinepay or manage cards from the iOS app or Android app.
What you need before you pay
SendGrid sells two separately priced products: the Email API and Marketing Campaigns. Sending through one does not consume the other's allowance, and each is upgraded independently, so decide which you need first.
- An active Coinepay virtual card with its number, expiry date and CVV, available in your Coinepay dashboard.
- Enough available balance on the card to cover the first charge plus any applicable tax (SendGrid notes that VAT is charged to certain European customers and that Australian GST collection began in November 2025).
- Your real billing name and address, matching the details on your Coinepay account.
- A verified email and phone number for your SendGrid account.
Important card-type restriction: SendGrid's billing documentation states it accepts credit or debit cards only and does not accept PayPal, wire transfers, checks, prepaid cards, or cards requiring a PIN. Because the funding type of your specific Coinepay card is something you should confirm for yourself, contact Coinepay support to check your card meets SendGrid's requirement before you attempt the upgrade. Do not assume it qualifies.
Plans and pricing
Prices below are the US-site figures seen at the time of writing (October 2026); always confirm the current price and the exact tier in checkout before you pay, and check SendGrid's official pricing pages, since local-currency quotes and taxes vary by region.
| Product | Plans |
|---|---|
| Email API | Free Trial ($0 for 60 days, up to 100 emails/day), Essentials (from $19.95/month), Pro (from $89.95/month), Premier (custom, contact sales) |
| Marketing Campaigns | Free Trial ($0 for 60 days), Basic (from $15/month), Advanced (from $60/month), Custom (quoted) |
Email API volume tiers listed at the time of writing include Essentials 50K at $19.95/month and 100K at $34.95/month, and Pro at 100K $89.95, 300K $249, 700K $499, 1.5M $799 and 2.5M $1,099/month. Marketing Campaigns pricing depends on contacts stored and emails sent. The 60-day Free Trial is not a perpetual free tier: SendGrid retired its old free plans, so continued sending after the trial requires a paid plan.
Step 1: Create your SendGrid account
Sign-up involves entering your account details, verifying your email and a phone number, and supplying business details. Google sign-up and using an existing Twilio login are also documented routes. The 60-day trial starts at sign-up and needs no card at first, which lets you test deliverability before you commit. Note that upgrading ends the trial immediately and cannot restart it.
Step 2: Open the upgrade dialog
When you are ready to pay, log in to the SendGrid console and go to Settings → Account Details → Your Products. Next to the Email API or Marketing Campaigns product, choose Change Plan, then Select for the tier you want. Remember the two products are upgraded separately, so repeat this if you need both.
Step 3: Enter your Coinepay card and submit
- In the payment dialog, enter your Coinepay card number, expiry date and CVV exactly as they appear in your dashboard.
- Enter the billing name and address that match your Coinepay account.
- Review the plan, tier and any tax shown.
- Click Submit to confirm.
If a 3-D Secure (bank authentication) prompt appears, complete it. Approve the confirmation in your Coinepay app if prompted, and keep your browser's pop-ups and cookies enabled so the authentication window can load.
Step 4: Manage your card and invoices later
To change the card on file or view past invoices, go to Settings → Account Details → Billing and edit the Payment Method using the pencil icon. Keeping a funded card here matters: a declined card on file can freeze your sending, and updating it triggers another payment attempt. If payment stays outstanding through the month, SendGrid says the account is terminated, and restoration requires the owner to contact support within six months.
Troubleshooting a declined card
One documented SendGrid payment error reads [ThreeDs2_Authentication_Exception] Transaction declined.402 - [card_error/card_declined/generic_decline] Your card was declined. SendGrid associates it with failed bank authentication, a possible bank block, mismatched billing details, or the browser blocking the authentication pop-up or cookies. Work through these causes:
Insufficient balance
Confirm your Coinepay card has enough to cover the plan price plus any tax or overage. Top up in the Coinepay app and retry. Remember SendGrid does not offer prepayment or quarterly/annual billing on ordinary accounts, so the full monthly charge must clear.
Billing address mismatch
The name and address in the SendGrid payment dialog must match your Coinepay billing details. A mismatch is a common decline cause. Re-enter them carefully and resubmit.
3-D Secure / authentication failure
If the transaction fails authentication, enable pop-ups and cookies for the SendGrid and Twilio domains, then retry and complete any approval in your Coinepay app. Switching to a supported, up-to-date browser can also help the 3-D Secure window load.
Card funding type
Because SendGrid rejects prepaid cards and cards requiring a PIN, a decline may reflect the funding type rather than a balance or address issue. Ask Coinepay support to confirm your card's type meets SendGrid's requirement.
Regional and recurring-payment rules
A SendGrid help article reports that India's recurring-payment authentication rules can leave a new Indian customer's upgrade unpaid and the sending limit unchanged; its stated remedy is to contact SendGrid support. Separately, Twilio has applied email delivery restrictions to some destinations over time. Use your real identity and real billing details, and if a decline persists, contact SendGrid support rather than trying to work around a regional check.
Cancelling, downgrading and refunds
An administrator cancels at Settings → Account Details → Your Products → Cancel Subscription, then completes the confirmation prompts. Cancellation does not delete your account data or Twilio login, and a canceled or downgraded paid plan remains usable until month-end. A subscription refund can be requested for the latest month only if the account has no usage that calendar month, no overages and no Marketing Campaigns contacts stored; prior-month overage and contact-storage charges are excluded. Reply to the invoice email or contact SendGrid support, and note that eligibility is not a promise of automatic reimbursement.
Keep your Coinepay card ready
For smooth monthly billing, keep enough balance on the card you saved in SendGrid and watch for the renewal date. You can monitor spending and manage the card from the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app at any time. If you hit a payment problem you cannot resolve, reach Coinepay support or the Coinepay Telegram for help with your card, and SendGrid support for anything specific to your account or invoice.

FAQ
Can I use a Coinepay virtual card to pay for SendGrid?
SendGrid accepts credit or debit cards and states it does not accept prepaid cards or cards requiring a PIN. Confirm your Coinepay card's funding type meets this requirement by contacting Coinepay support before you upgrade, rather than assuming it qualifies.
Where do I enter my card to upgrade a SendGrid plan?
Go to the SendGrid console, then Settings → Account Details → Your Products → Change Plan, choose Select for your tier, enter your card details in the payment dialog and click Submit. Email API and Marketing Campaigns are upgraded separately.
Why was my card declined with a ThreeDs2 Authentication error?
SendGrid links the error [ThreeDs2_Authentication_Exception] ... card_declined/generic_decline to failed bank authentication, a bank block, mismatched billing details, or blocked browser pop-ups and cookies. Check your balance and billing address, enable pop-ups and cookies, complete any Coinepay app approval, then retry.
Does SendGrid have a free plan?
SendGrid offers a 60-day Free Trial for both Email API and Marketing Campaigns, but this is not a perpetual free tier. The older free plans were retired, so continued sending after the trial requires a paid plan and a valid card.
Can I get a refund after cancelling SendGrid?
A refund can be requested for the latest month only if the account had no usage that calendar month, no overages and no Marketing Campaigns contacts stored. Prior-month charges are excluded. Reply to the invoice email or contact SendGrid support; eligibility is not an automatic reimbursement.
