To send money from abroad to someone’s MoMo wallet in Vietnam, use a cross-border transfer rather than MoMo’s domestic wallet-to-wallet feature. This guide explains what to ask the recipient for, how to select a mobile-wallet payout in Coinepay Global Remittance, and what the recipient may need to do to receive the money.
How receiving money through MoMo works
MoMo is a Vietnamese e-wallet, also called Ví Điện Tử MoMo. The recipient’s wallet is in Vietnam, and international money received through MoMo is paid out in Vietnamese đồng (VND). The sender may start the transfer in another currency; review the payout amount, exchange rate and fees displayed by Coinepay before confirming.
MoMo calls its international receiving service “Nhận tiền Quốc tế”, meaning “Receive international money.” Its instructions depend on the participating remittance service. Some receipts require the recipient to enter a reference code and authorize that particular payment. An automatic-receipt arrangement may ask the recipient to authorize the first eligible payment. Follow the instructions shown for the actual transfer rather than assuming every MoMo payout uses the same claim process.
This is separate from MoMo’s domestic “Chuyển tiền – MoMo liền” → “Đến MoMo” transfer flow. A sender abroad should use the international remittance flow and select MoMo as the receiving method if it is offered for the transfer.
What to get from the recipient before sending
- The Vietnamese mobile number registered to their MoMo account. Ask the recipient to check the number currently attached to the wallet, especially if they have changed phones or updated their account number. Enter it in the format requested by the Coinepay transfer form.
- Their full name exactly as registered with MoMo. Ask them to copy it from their account details, including the correct spelling and order. Do not substitute a nickname or another person’s name.
- Confirmation that their wallet can receive international money. MoMo’s international-receipt terms require completed identity and facial verification, a linked bank account, and valid registration. The recipient should resolve any outstanding account requirements before you send.
Check the recipient details together before you confirm. A phone number that belongs to someone else, an old number, or a name mismatch can prevent the intended person from receiving the transfer. If the recipient has recently changed their MoMo number, ask them to verify the current registered number and bank-link status in their app. MoMo offers an eligible in-app “Cập Nhật Số Điện Thoại” (“Update phone number”) feature, and users who update their number need to relink their bank afterward.
Send to MoMo with Coinepay Global Remittance
- Sign in or register. Open the Coinepay app or self-service dashboard. If you are new, register with Coinepay and complete the identity checks requested for the transfer.
- Start a cross-border transfer. Choose Vietnam as the recipient’s destination. Enter the amount you want to send or the amount the recipient should receive, as the form allows.
- Choose the payout method. Select mobile wallet, then select MoMo if it appears among the available payout options. Do not select bank deposit or cash pickup if your intention is a MoMo wallet payout. If MoMo is not offered, do not assume another wallet choice will reach it; contact Coinepay support about the available options.
- Enter the recipient’s details. Use the MoMo-registered Vietnamese phone number and the recipient’s full registered name. Provide any other information the transfer form specifically requests. Recheck every digit and the name before moving on.
- Review before confirming. Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees before confirmation. Check the displayed VND payout amount, the recipient and the selected MoMo method. If anything differs from what you intended, go back and correct it before confirming.
- Confirm and keep the transfer details. Follow the on-screen confirmation steps. Save the transfer reference or confirmation information so you can identify the payment if you need help.
- Track its status. Open the transfer in your Coinepay app or dashboard to see its status. If the recipient needs to take an action to claim the money, share only the relevant transfer instructions or reference with the intended recipient through a channel you trust.
Transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay may request documents explaining the purpose of a transfer or the source of funds. Coinepay does not serve sanctioned persons or residents of jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions, and it screens customers and counterparties against sanctions lists.
What the recipient should expect in MoMo
Ask the recipient to check their MoMo wallet balance and in-app notifications using the account linked to the number you entered. Depending on the international receiving arrangement, the money may be credited after any required authorization, or MoMo may prompt the recipient to take action in “Nhận tiền Quốc tế.” They should follow the instructions shown in their own app and check that the payment details match what you sent.
Do not tell the recipient to look for a Western Union MTCN unless the transfer’s actual instructions specify one. MoMo supports an MTCN entry process for Western Union, but that is an example of a partner-specific procedure, not a universal step for a Coinepay transfer. If a reference code or authorization is needed, use the instructions associated with your transfer.
MoMo applies account verification requirements and wallet controls. The recipient needs the identity and facial checks and linked bank account required for international receipt. MoMo also limits how much value a wallet can hold; if a receipt would put the wallet above its applicable balance limit, its international-receipt terms allow the recipient to switch the receiving method to a bank account. Other transaction controls may apply, but a limit on outgoing wallet activity should not be treated as the limit for an incoming international payout. The recipient should check their MoMo app or MoMo support for the rules applicable to their account.
Troubleshooting a MoMo wallet payout
The phone number is wrong or has changed
If you have not confirmed the transfer, correct the number first. If you have already confirmed it, check the status and contact Coinepay support immediately with the transfer reference. Do not assume that a confirmed payout can be cancelled or redirected. The recipient should confirm the number currently registered to their MoMo account before you try again.
The registered name does not match
Ask the recipient to check their full name in MoMo and compare it with the transfer details. If the transfer is still editable, correct the entry. Otherwise, contact Coinepay support and follow the instructions for that transfer. Use real identity details; changing the name to bypass a validation check can cause further problems.
The wallet is unverified or its balance limit is reached
The recipient should review identity verification, facial verification and their linked bank account in MoMo. If the wallet cannot accept the amount because of its balance limit, they should follow MoMo’s instructions about an available bank-account receiving option. Do not send another payment merely to work around an account restriction. Ask Coinepay support what options apply to the transfer already in progress.
The transfer is under review or the recipient cannot see it
Check the transfer status in Coinepay first. Respond to any legitimate request for identity, purpose-of-payment or source-of-funds documents. The recipient can check their MoMo balance, notifications and any instructions under “Nhận tiền Quốc tế.” If the status and wallet information do not agree, give Coinepay support the transfer reference and ask the recipient to contact MoMo through its in-app support if their wallet shows an error. Do not send a duplicate transfer while the first remains unresolved.
