mCash is SLT-Mobitel's mobile-phone-based e-money service in Sri Lanka, where the balance is held in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR). If you have family, friends or a supplier in Sri Lanka who uses mCash, you can send a cross-border transfer with Coinepay Global Remittance that pays out directly into their wallet. This guide walks through what you need, how to send, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Before you start

To use Coinepay you need to register and complete identity verification (KYC). If you have not done so, create an account at the Coinepay registration page and finish verification first. You manage everything from the 24/7 self-service dashboard or the Coinepay mobile app for iOS and Android.

Coinepay sends to every country and region except those under comprehensive sanctions. Sri Lanka is a supported destination. Every transfer is subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations, and Coinepay may ask for supporting documents such as the purpose or source of funds.

What you need from the recipient

mCash is a digital account tied to a Sri Lankan mobile number, so the most important detail is the recipient's registered mCash mobile number. According to Mobitel's own instructions, the person receiving the money must already be a registered mCash user — the service is for Mobitel prepaid and postpaid customers, and registration is linked to a mobile number and NIC (National Identity Card) number.

  • Registered mobile number: the exact number the recipient uses for mCash.
  • Full name as registered: the recipient's name exactly as it appears on their mCash/Mobitel registration, so it matches during screening.
  • Payout method: mobile wallet (mCash) as the delivery option.

One note on the number format: the format an international sending form expects — whether with the +94 country code, a leading 0, or digits only — is not something you should guess. Follow the entry instructions shown in the Coinepay app, and ask your recipient to confirm their number is correct before you send. Mobitel's terms warn that a careless wrong entry may not be reversible, so double-check every digit.

Step by step: sending to mCash with Coinepay

  1. Open Coinepay and start a remittance. From the dashboard or app, choose to send money and select Sri Lanka as the destination country.
  2. Choose the mobile wallet payout method. Pick mobile wallet and select mCash as the payout option.
  3. Enter the recipient's details. Add the registered mCash mobile number and the recipient's full name exactly as registered. Enter any other information the form requests.
  4. Enter the amount. You can usually type the amount to send or the amount you want delivered in LKR.
  5. Review the exchange rate and fees. Before you confirm, Coinepay shows the exchange rate, the fees and the estimated arrival time clearly on screen. Check the figures and the recipient details carefully.
  6. Confirm. Once you are satisfied, confirm the transfer. You may be asked for additional verification or documents as part of compliance checks.
  7. Track the status. Every transfer has status tracking in the app, so you can follow it from sent to delivered.

How fast does it arrive?

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and the destination country. The estimated arrival time for your specific transfer is shown in the app before you confirm, so rely on that figure rather than a fixed promise.

How the recipient sees the money

When the payout completes, the funds land in the recipient's mCash wallet balance. mCash typically confirms wallet activity with an SMS receipt, and the recipient can also check their balance and transaction history in the mCash app, which supports PIN and biometric login. From there they can use the balance as normal — for example, cashing out through an mCash merchant by giving their registered mobile number and amount, authorizing the phone prompt with their PIN, and checking the confirmation SMS before receiving cash.

Wallet limits and verification levels

Because mCash is an e-money wallet regulated by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, how much it can receive and hold depends on the recipient's verification level. These are the recipient's wallet limits, set by mCash and the regulator — not Coinepay limits:

Wallet levelStored-value limit
BasicLKR 20,000 (after customer verification; otherwise the maximum stays lower)
EnhancedLKR 150,000 (after enhanced KYC)

Upgrading from Basic to Enhanced is handled by the recipient through a Mobitel service point. Two important points for senders:

  • The wallet's stored-value limit is also its maximum per transaction, and daily received totals are capped at the same figures. So the available headroom in your recipient's wallet can be less than the headline limit if they already hold a balance.
  • If you plan to send an amount near or above the Basic ceiling, ask your recipient to upgrade to Enhanced first so the payout is not rejected.

Troubleshooting

Wrong mobile number

An incorrect number can send the payout to the wrong wallet or cause it to fail. Confirm the registered number with your recipient before sending. Mobitel's terms note that negligent wrong entries may not be reversed, so prevention matters.

Name mismatch

If the name you entered does not match the name registered to the mCash account, the transfer can be held or returned during screening. Use the recipient's full name exactly as registered with mCash.

Wallet limit reached

If the wallet has reached its stored-value or daily limit, the payout cannot be credited. Ask the recipient to check their balance and free up headroom, or to upgrade to Enhanced, and then retry.

Unverified or unregistered wallet

The recipient must already be a registered mCash user. If the number is not registered, or verification is incomplete, the payout can fail. Have the recipient complete mCash registration or verification with Mobitel first.

Compliance review

Transfers are screened against sanctions lists and local regulations. Coinepay may pause a transfer to request documents such as the purpose or source of funds. Respond promptly with accurate information to clear the review. Never split a transfer, use a third party, or try to work around checks.

Money missing on the mCash side

If Coinepay shows the transfer as delivered but the recipient cannot see it, ask them to check their mCash transaction history and SMS receipts, and to contact mCash customer care on 7111 or through the in-app complaint route. For questions about the transfer itself, contact Coinepay support.

FAQ

What details do I need to send money to an mCash wallet?

You need the recipient's registered mCash mobile number and their full name exactly as registered with mCash. The recipient must already be a registered mCash user. Follow the number format shown in the Coinepay app rather than guessing.

How long does a transfer to mCash take?

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and destination country. Coinepay shows the estimated arrival time before you confirm, and you can track the status in the app.

What are the mCash wallet limits?

mCash lists a Basic wallet limit of LKR 20,000 and an Enhanced limit of LKR 150,000 after enhanced KYC. The stored-value limit is also the per-transaction and daily cap, so available headroom can be lower if the wallet already holds a balance. Upgrading to Enhanced is done through a Mobitel service point.

Why was my mCash transfer held or rejected?

Common causes are a wrong number, a name that does not match the registered account, a wallet that has reached its limit, an unregistered or unverified wallet, or a compliance review. Check the details, ask the recipient to verify their wallet, and respond to any document requests from Coinepay.

The transfer shows delivered but my recipient can't see it. What now?

Ask the recipient to check their mCash transaction history and SMS receipts and to contact mCash customer care on 7111 or via the in-app complaint route. For issues with the transfer itself, contact Coinepay support.
