Mercari is a marketplace, not a subscription you need to activate. You pay when you buy an item, and the checkout rules depend on which Mercari service you use. This guide explains how to prepare a Coinepay virtual card, place a US Mercari order, and check the different rules for overseas purchases from Mercari Japan.
Before you shop: check your Mercari region
Start with Mercari’s regional payment rules. Mercari US does not accept payment methods issued outside the US. It also cannot verify international, prepaid or VoIP phone numbers during account setup. For overseas purchases from Mercari Japan, cards must be issued in the country or region registered to the account. Mercari Japan accounts must be used for the country or region where the account holder resides, and the registered region cannot be changed.
These restrictions may determine whether you can use a particular card. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the relevant Mercari requirement before you buy. Use your real residence, identity, phone number and billing details. Do not change your stated region or use someone else’s details to try to pass a payment check.
To use Coinepay card services, first register and complete identity verification. Coinepay issues a virtual card with a card number, expiry date and CVV; you can manage it through the self-service dashboard or Coinepay mobile app. Check the app for your available funds and any card information you need before shopping. Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions, and some services are not available in every jurisdiction.
Understand the total before you pay
Mercari does not require a confirmed paid membership for the purchase flow covered here. Instead, review the charges shown for the particular item and region. For new or updated Mercari US listings, the published buyer charge is called Buyer Protection. At the time of writing (October 2026), it is 3.6% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping; there is no separate buyer payment-processing fee. Mercari also publishes a Selling fee of 10% of that same base, which applies to sellers rather than as a second buyer checkout fee. Check Mercari US’s official fee information and your order total before paying, because charges can change.
For overseas orders from Mercari Japan, the components differ by destination. Taiwan and Hong Kong orders include the item price, shipping fee and a service fee. US orders include a purchase price that incorporates the applicable service fee, plus shipping and estimated import duties and taxes. Review the final checkout total rather than assuming that the listing price is the amount your card will be charged; exchange rates can change.
How to sign up and pay on Mercari US
- Create your Mercari account. On Mercari US, select Sign up. Enter your email address and password, verify the code sent to your email, choose a username and complete phone verification. Mercari also describes Google, Apple and Facebook sign-up options. Use a phone number that meets its verification rules.
- Prepare your card. After completing Coinepay registration and identity verification, find your virtual card number, expiry date and CVV in your Coinepay dashboard or app. Check that you have enough available funds for the full amount shown at checkout, not just the item price.
- Choose an item and review the order. Read the listing, shipping details and checkout charges. Confirm that the delivery and billing information you enter is accurate and belongs to you.
- Choose your payment at checkout. Open Card & Billing to select or update a payment method. Enter the card details and the genuine billing address associated with the card. If you intend to apply an eligible Mercari balance, check the balance option here as well. Outside checkout, Mercari US places saved payment methods under Settings → My Payments.
- Confirm only after checking the total. Review the payment method, delivery details and full order amount before placing the order. Mercari says you cannot change the payment method after purchase. If Mercari or the card issuer requests an additional verification step, complete it through the legitimate checkout flow rather than repeatedly submitting the order.
Mercari US lists several payment options, including major credit and debit card types, PayPal, Venmo, Zip, Apple Pay, Mercari Credits and Mercari Balance. Its rules also say that a prepaid debit card needs a registered billing address. That rule does not establish whether any particular Coinepay card qualifies; ask Coinepay support to confirm relevant card requirements before relying on it for an order.
If you are buying from Mercari Japan overseas
Do not assume that a Mercari US account or payment setup transfers to Mercari Japan. For its overseas purchase flow, Mercari Japan lists credit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay as payment methods, and names American Express, eftpos Australia, JCB, Mastercard and Visa as supported card types. It also requires a card issued in the account’s registered country or region. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets these requirements before buying; a supported card type alone does not settle the regional requirement.
Use an account registered for your actual country or region of residence. At checkout, review the available payment options, enter your real card and billing details if card payment is offered, and check the displayed total, shipping and any duties or taxes before confirming. If you are asked to complete 3-D Secure verification, follow the on-screen authentication instructions. Do not assume that a card entered successfully will necessarily pass the final security checks.
Troubleshooting a declined Mercari payment
- Insufficient available funds: Compare the amount available for the card with the entire checkout total, including Buyer Protection, shipping or other applicable charges. Check your balance in Coinepay before trying again.
- Incorrect card details: Re-enter the card number, expiry date and CVV carefully. Mercari Japan also identifies an incorrect CVC or an exceeded card limit as possible reasons for an error. Check your card settings in Coinepay if you need to confirm a limit.
- Billing address or ZIP mismatch: Mercari US identifies mismatched billing information as a reason for rejection. Check that the address and ZIP code you entered are your genuine billing details associated with the card. Do not substitute an invented address to make an order appear eligible.
- 3-D Secure did not complete: Mercari Japan overseas notes that failed or incomplete 3-D Secure verification can prevent payment. Follow the authentication prompt and check whether it completed. If you cannot complete it, ask Coinepay support for help with the card-side verification.
- Merchant region or security checks: Recheck the US-issued-payment-method rule for Mercari US or the registered-region issuance rule for Mercari Japan overseas. Mercari US also notes that reused account, address or payment information can cause a failure. Mercari Japan cites issuer or Mercari security restrictions and temporary system errors. If your details are accurate, contact the relevant support team rather than changing your identity or region.
Where possible, check whether an order was created before retrying a payment. If you need help, share the checkout context and any message you actually saw with Mercari support for a marketplace restriction, or with Coinepay support for a card-related question. Avoid sending your full card number or CVV in a support message.
What if you need to cancel or return an order?
Mercari US allows a buyer to request cancellation before the seller confirms shipment. If the seller agrees or does not confirm shipment within 24 hours, Mercari cancels and refunds the original payment method, subject to any applicable nonrefundable fees. For an eligible US return, submit the request within 72 hours of carrier-confirmed delivery and before the transaction completes. A significantly misdescribed, shipping-damaged or counterfeit item may qualify. Depending on the approved return amount, Mercari may refund the original payment method or provide expiring account credit.
Mercari Japan overseas does not accept cancellations after ordering simply because the customer changes their mind. Delivery damage or a significant mismatch with the description may qualify for a refund claim within 14 days of delivery, subject to review. Read the listing and regional return policy before you confirm payment, especially when buying across borders.
