You can set up a Jira Cloud site on the Free plan, then add payment details when you move to a paid plan. This guide explains where to enter a Coinepay virtual card, what to check before confirming the purchase, and how to investigate a declined payment. Card acceptance depends on Atlassian’s checkout and payment checks.
Choose the Jira Cloud plan and billing arrangement
Jira Cloud plans are Free, Standard, Premium, and Enterprise. Free supports up to 10 users. If you are moving from Free, Atlassian’s buying guide describes a 14-day Standard trial or a 30-day Premium trial, followed by monthly billing unless you deactivate the subscription. Review the trial terms and the date billing will begin before adding a card.
At the time of writing (October 2026), Atlassian’s USD list price for the first 100 paid users is $9.70 per user per month for Standard and $19.60 per user per month for Premium. Monthly pricing is progressive for larger teams; annual pricing uses user tiers rather than those monthly rates. Enterprise is annual-only and may require a quote. Check Atlassian’s official Jira pricing page and the amount shown at checkout for the price that applies to your purchase. If you already have a quote, check its expiry and quoted amount rather than assuming the current list price applies.
This guide concerns Jira Cloud subscriptions paid through an immediate-payment checkout. Atlassian lists cards and PayPal among its immediate-payment options. Approved termed annual invoice orders follow a different process and cannot be paid by card, PayPal, or ACH debit. Ask the person managing your organization’s purchase which arrangement applies before trying to enter card details.
What you need before checkout
- A Jira site and billing access: Have your Atlassian sign-in ready. If someone else manages subscriptions for your organization, ask a billing admin to make the plan change or update the payment method.
- A Coinepay account: Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Coinepay provides a virtual card number, expiry date, and CVV; you can manage the card in its dashboard or mobile app.
- Available funds: Check the amount due at Jira checkout, including any applicable tax, and ensure your card has sufficient available funds. Check the Coinepay app for details relevant to funding or using your card.
- Accurate billing information: Use your real name and billing details. The sold-to address associated with an Atlassian billing profile should be accurate; do not enter an invented address to make a payment go through.
Atlassian names Visa, Mastercard, and American Express as accepted card networks, and says Discover is not accepted for monthly renewals. That list does not establish whether a particular Coinepay card will qualify. If a network or other card requirement matters to your purchase, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets it before you buy.
Step by step: sign up and pay for Jira
- Create or open your Jira Cloud site. For a new site, go to atlassian.com/try, choose Jira’s cloud trial, and specify a new or existing site URL as prompted. Complete setup and sign in. A newly set-up site starts on Free. If your organization already has Jira, use its existing site instead of creating a duplicate subscription.
- Choose your paid plan. In Atlassian Administration, open Billing → Manage subscriptions → Change plan. Select Standard or Premium and review the displayed trial, billing frequency, user count, and purchase terms. For Enterprise, follow Atlassian’s quote or sales process rather than assuming the same card checkout is available.
- Check the amount and billing profile. Before submitting payment, verify the subscription, currency, amount due, renewal arrangement, and sold-to address displayed for your organization. If a billing admin controls these details, ask them to correct any discrepancy before proceeding.
- Enter the virtual card details. Open your Coinepay dashboard or app and copy the card number, expiry date, and CVV into Atlassian’s payment form when prompted. Enter your real billing details as requested. Follow any authentication instructions presented during checkout; do not repeatedly submit the form if a verification step is still pending.
- Confirm and check the result. Submit the purchase only after reviewing the final terms. Return to Atlassian Administration to confirm the subscription status and saved payment method. Keep the receipt or invoice and note when the trial ends or the next payment is due.
Atlassian has an improved billing system and an original billing system, so the payment screen may not look the same for every organization. In improved billing, billing admins can manage saved cards at admin.atlassian.com/billing → billing account → Payment method. Billing profiles link a payment method and sold-to address to subscriptions. In original billing, look under Atlassian Administration → Billing → Manage subscriptions → Billing details. Use the flow shown in your account rather than searching for a button that belongs to the other system.
If Atlassian declines the card
A declined payment does not, by itself, identify the cause. One Jira Community user reported the messages “We are unable to authenticate your payment method” and “Your payment method couldn’t be processed” while replacing an expired card. Those messages are examples of what a user may see, not diagnoses. Work through the checks below, then ask the relevant support team to investigate if the problem remains.
- Insufficient balance: Compare the available funds shown in Coinepay with the full amount Atlassian is attempting to charge, including any applicable tax. Check for other pending card activity before retrying. If you cannot determine the amount available, consult the Coinepay app or support.
- Billing-address mismatch: Recheck the name and billing details entered at checkout against your real details. Ask your Atlassian billing admin to review the billing profile’s sold-to address or the billing details in the original system. Correct errors; do not substitute an address from another region.
- Authentication or 3-D Secure: If checkout requests an authentication step, complete it through the instructions provided. If it fails or no prompt appears, note the exact message and time. Contact Coinepay support to check whether a card-side authentication issue is visible, and Atlassian support to check the checkout attempt. Do not assume that an authentication error proves the card lacks a particular feature.
- Merchant or region checks: Atlassian’s payment rules, your billing location, and applicable restrictions may affect a purchase. Atlassian prohibits providing products to US-embargoed jurisdictions or restricted parties. Check that your account and billing information accurately reflect your location, and contact Atlassian if its checkout rejects an otherwise accurate order. Do not try to bypass a regional restriction.
- Wrong purchase flow: If you are paying an approved termed annual invoice, card payment is not an option for that order. Ask your billing admin to check the invoice instructions rather than repeatedly trying the card in a different screen.
When requesting help, share the error wording, time of the attempt, Jira site or billing account, and whether you were adding a new card or paying an invoice. Never send your full card number or CVV in a support message.
Manage the subscription after payment
Keep the saved card and billing details current so a future renewal does not fail. If you need to stop a subscription, improved billing places Deactivate under admin.atlassian.com/billing → Subscriptions → Manage → More actions; original billing uses my.atlassian.com → Cancel Subscription. Atlassian says most plans stop charging at the end of the billing cycle without credit for unused time. Check the cancellation confirmation and the date shown for your particular subscription.
For an initial purchase, Atlassian’s stated refund policy allows a monthly-cloud refund only during the first paid month after a trial, or a new annual-cloud refund within 30 days of first purchase. Renewals and upgrades are not refundable under that policy, and its refund guidance excludes Enterprise. Review Atlassian’s current policy before relying on a refund. If you need help with the Coinepay card itself, use Coinepay support; for plan, invoice, or Jira checkout questions, contact Atlassian.

FAQ
Can I start using Jira before adding a Coinepay card?
Yes. A newly set-up Jira Cloud site starts on Free, which supports up to 10 users. Review the payment prompts and trial terms when you choose a paid plan.
Where do I update my card for Jira renewals?
In improved billing, a billing admin can use admin.atlassian.com/billing → billing account → Payment method. In original billing, use Atlassian Administration → Billing → Manage subscriptions → Billing details.
Why does Jira say it cannot authenticate my payment method?
The message alone does not identify the cause. Check your available funds and real billing details, complete any requested authentication, and share the error with Coinepay or Atlassian support if it persists.
Can I use a virtual card to pay an annual Jira invoice?
It depends on the purchase arrangement. Atlassian says approved termed annual invoice orders cannot be paid by card; ask your billing admin to check that invoice’s payment instructions.
