Paying for a British Airways flight and buying an Avios Subscription are two different checkouts. Flights are booked through British Airways; subscriptions are purchased through Avios.com. This guide explains how to prepare a Coinepay virtual card for either purchase, follow the right checkout, and investigate a declined payment.

Choose what you want to pay for

Joining The British Airways Club is free at its Blue tier. Bronze, Silver and Gold are earned status tiers, not subscription plans. An Avios Subscription is a separate purchase that credits Avios to your Club account over time. Its plans are Voyager, Traveller, Explorer and Adventurer, with monthly and yearly options. A flight booking is a separate transaction and does not require an Avios Subscription.

Check the current subscription price and terms on Avios.com before choosing a plan. Prices vary by region, and Avios displays the charge currency and total before purchase based on the country in your Club account address. For flights, review the total shown by British Airways at checkout rather than assuming subscription payment options or terms apply.

What you need before checkout

  • A ready-to-use Coinepay card: Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Your virtual card number, expiry date and CVV are available after issuance in the Coinepay app or self-service dashboard. Check the card’s available funds and applicable details there before paying.
  • Your real account and billing information: Use your own identity and accurate billing details. If a checkout asks for a billing address, enter the address associated with your payment details; do not change your country or address to bypass eligibility or payment checks.
  • For a subscription: You must be a British Airways Club member aged at least 18. Avios requires a positive Avios balance or qualifying activity in the past 36 months, and your balance cannot be negative. Only one subscription plan can be active per member. Subscription Avios are capped at 200,000 per calendar year, separately from the Buy Avios allowance.

Avios Subscription is unavailable if your Club account is registered in Germany. Avios also warns against purchasing or subscribing while living in or travelling to Germany. Follow those restrictions rather than trying another address or location. Coinepay services may also vary by jurisdiction; check availability in the app or contact Coinepay support if you are unsure.

How to buy an Avios Subscription

  1. Join or sign in to The British Airways Club. If you are new, create your Club account using your real details. Check that your account meets Avios’s age, activity and balance requirements before proceeding.
  2. Go to Avios.com and select Avios Subscription. Review Voyager, Traveller, Explorer and Adventurer, then choose the monthly or yearly option that suits you. Read the price, charge currency, Avios allocation and renewal terms displayed for your account.
  3. Prepare your Coinepay card. Open the Coinepay app or dashboard and check the card details and available funds. A yearly subscription is charged upfront even though its Avios are credited in 12 monthly instalments. A monthly subscription is charged when you sign up and approximately on the same date each following month.
  4. Complete the Avios.com card checkout. Enter the card number, expiry date and CVV where requested, provide accurate billing information, and follow any security prompt presented during payment. Review the final total before confirming. Card acceptance is determined by the checkout; do not assume the payment methods offered for BA flights also apply to subscriptions.
  5. Check the result in your account. Confirm the purchase status on Avios.com before making another attempt. To manage subsequent payments or change the card, sign in to your Club account on Avios.com and open My Subscription.

How to pay for a British Airways flight

  1. Choose your journey on British Airways. Select the flights and any options you need, then review the passenger details and booking total. Flight-only bookings require full payment at booking.
  2. Check the payment page. British Airways says its flight checkout accepts credit, debit and charge cards and PayPal, but the options available for your booking are the ones displayed on that page. Do not expect a particular option to appear for every itinerary or location.
  3. If a card option is available, enter your Coinepay virtual card details. Use the card number, expiry date and CVV shown in Coinepay, and enter your real billing details accurately. Complete any security step requested by the checkout, then submit the payment once and wait for a result.
  4. Verify the booking. Look for the booking confirmation and reference before retrying a payment that appears to have stalled. If you cannot tell whether the booking was completed, check your British Airways account or contact British Airways to avoid an unintended duplicate purchase.

British Airways says virtual cards can be used for flights where their card scheme is accepted. The schemes and payment options available can depend on the booking checkout. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the applicable requirement before you buy; do not rely on the separate Avios Subscription checkout as proof that a flight payment will be accepted, or vice versa.

If your card is declined

A decline or a generic “transaction error” does not, by itself, identify the cause. Work through these checks without repeatedly submitting an uncertain booking:

  • Insufficient available funds: Compare the amount displayed at checkout with the card’s available funds in Coinepay. For a yearly Avios Subscription, account for the full upfront charge, not one month’s Avios allocation. Check the app for any applicable funding or card details before retrying.
  • Billing-address mismatch: Recheck the name, address and postal code you entered, including spelling and formatting. Use your genuine details and the address associated with your payment information. If they are correct and the payment still fails, ask the merchant what information its checkout requires.
  • 3-D Secure or another authentication step: If the merchant presents a security prompt, complete it as instructed and return to checkout. If the prompt fails to appear, expires or is rejected, note the message and ask Coinepay support to check what happened on the card side. Do not assume that every checkout will present the same verification flow.
  • Merchant or region checks: Check that your Club account and location meet Avios Subscription rules, or that the card option you selected is offered for your flight booking. Do not use a false address or another person’s account to work around a restriction. Ask the merchant about its checkout requirements and Coinepay support whether your card meets them.

For an Avios Subscription payment that fails, Avios says it retries the next day and up to five further times. That month’s Avios are credited only after payment succeeds; if all attempts fail, Avios closes the subscription. Check My Subscription and update your card there if needed. For a flight, contact British Airways about the booking status before submitting a new payment if you are unsure whether the first attempt went through. When seeking help, share the transaction time, amount and exact error message, but never send your full card number or CVV in a support message.

Manage renewals, cancellations and refunds

On Avios.com, My Subscription is where you can manage payments, change the card, cancel when eligible or turn off yearly auto-renewal. After the cooling-off period, a monthly subscription requires at least three payments; an eligible cancellation then takes effect at the end of the paid month. A yearly subscription normally runs for its full 12-month term without a partial refund after cooling-off and renews automatically unless you turn renewal off. Avios says it sends a reminder at least 14 days before renewal.

Within 14 days of first subscribing, you can request a full refund if you have not used any credited Avios. In My Subscription, choose “I’d like a refund”, or contact Avios support. A renewed yearly plan also has a 14-day cancellation window, though Avios may deduct the value of credited Avios already used. Review the current Avios terms before making a purchase or cancellation decision.

Where can I change the card used for my Avios Subscription?

Sign in to your British Airways Club account on Avios.com and open My Subscription to manage payments or change the card.

Will a yearly Avios Subscription charge me monthly?

No. The yearly plan is paid upfront, while its Avios are credited in 12 monthly instalments.

What should I do if my British Airways flight payment is declined?

Check available funds, billing details and any security prompt. If the booking status is unclear, contact British Airways before retrying; ask Coinepay support about card-side issues.
