PhonePe is one of India's most widely used payment apps, and its PhonePe Wallet is a prepaid instrument used in India in Indian rupees (INR). If you are abroad and want to put money into a friend's or family member's PhonePe-linked account, you can use Coinepay Global Remittance to send a cross-border transfer that pays out in India. This guide explains what details you need, how the transfer works step by step, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Before you start

A few things to know up front:

  • PhonePe and its wallet are built for India: the recipient needs an active number from an Indian telecom provider and the money is received in INR.
  • Coinepay sends your transfer as a cross-border remittance to India; the recipient receives local currency through the payout method you choose.
  • You must be registered with Coinepay and have completed identity verification (KYC) before sending. If you have not yet, create your account and finish verification first.
  • Every transfer is subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay may ask for extra information such as the purpose of the payment or the source of funds.

Coinepay screens all customers and counterparties against sanctions lists and does not send to sanctioned persons or to jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions. India is not one of those jurisdictions, so transfers to recipients in India are supported.

What details you need from the recipient

Ask your recipient for the information that matches the payout method you plan to use. For a wallet or UPI-based payout you will typically need:

  • The registered mobile number linked to their PhonePe account, or their UPI ID (also called a virtual payment address, or VPA), which has the form name@handle. A phone number on its own is not a wallet address, so confirm which identifier the Coinepay app asks for.
  • The recipient's full name exactly as registered with PhonePe and their bank. Even a small spelling difference can cause a name mismatch and hold up the payout.
  • Any bank-account details Coinepay requests if you choose a bank-deposit payout instead of a wallet payout.

Coinepay supports several payout methods in India, including bank account deposit, mobile wallets and cash pickup. Choose the one that suits your recipient. If your recipient wants the money inside their PhonePe balance specifically, check in the app which identifier is required, because PhonePe distinguishes between paying a mobile number by UPI (often funded from a linked bank account) and crediting the wallet balance itself.

Step by step: sending to PhonePe

  1. Open Coinepay. Sign in to the Coinepay app (iOS or Android) or the web dashboard, which is available 24/7.
  2. Start a new transfer. Choose to send money and select India as the destination country and INR as the payout currency.
  3. Select the payout method. Pick the mobile wallet or UPI option for PhonePe, or a bank deposit if that is what your recipient prefers. The available methods are shown for the destination you selected.
  4. Enter the recipient's details. Type the registered phone number or UPI ID and the recipient's full name exactly as registered. Double-check every character before continuing.
  5. Enter the amount. You can usually enter either the amount you want to send or the amount you want the recipient to receive.
  6. Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay shows the exchange rate and any fees clearly on the confirmation screen before you confirm. Review exactly how much INR the recipient will get.
  7. Provide any requested information. If prompted, add the purpose of the transfer or source-of-funds details so compliance screening can proceed.
  8. Confirm. Authorise the transfer. You will receive a reference you can use to track it.

Tracking the transfer and how the money arrives

Every Coinepay transfer has status tracking. Open the transfer in your dashboard or app to follow its progress from submitted, through processing and compliance checks, to paid out. You and your recipient can both keep an eye on it.

When the payout completes, the recipient sees the funds credited through the method you chose. For a wallet payout they will see the balance update in PhonePe; for a bank deposit the money lands in the linked account. PhonePe typically notifies users of incoming credits in-app and by SMS. If your recipient does not see the money after the transfer shows as paid out, have them check both their wallet balance and the bank account linked to their PhonePe account.

PhonePe wallet verification levels and ceilings

How much a PhonePe wallet can hold and what it can do depends on the recipient's KYC level. In general terms, PhonePe offers a Small PPI wallet, an Aadhaar-OTP-based e-KYC PPI wallet, and a Full KYC PPI wallet:

  • A Small PPI wallet is the most limited: it is intended for buying goods and services and cannot send money to another person or wallet, and it carries low load and balance ceilings.
  • An e-KYC PPI wallet has a higher balance ceiling and an annual credit ceiling, and lasts at most 365 days unless the user completes the Full-KYC upgrade.
  • A Full KYC PPI wallet has the highest ceilings and supports interoperable UPI access.

These are the recipient's own PhonePe limits set under Indian (RBI) rules. They are ceilings, not a guarantee that every amount or route is available, and PhonePe can apply lower, risk-based limits or cooling periods. If your recipient is not sure which level their wallet is on, they can check inside the PhonePe app. For the exchange rate, fees and any sending limits on your Coinepay transfer, rely on what the Coinepay app shows you before you confirm.

Troubleshooting

Wrong number or UPI ID

Incorrect recipient details can direct a payment to the wrong person. Always verify the number or UPI ID and the full name before confirming. If you have already sent and suspect a mistake, contact Coinepay support immediately with your transfer reference.

Name mismatch

If the name you entered does not match the name registered on the recipient's PhonePe or bank account, the payout can be held. Ask your recipient for the exact registered name and make sure it matches character for character.

Wallet limit reached

If the recipient's wallet is near its balance or credit ceiling for their verification level, an incoming credit may be refused. The recipient may need to upgrade their KYC level in PhonePe or receive the funds to their bank account instead.

Unverified or small wallet

A Small PPI or an unverified wallet has restricted functionality. If a wallet payout cannot be delivered, consider using a bank-deposit payout to the account linked to the recipient's PhonePe, and have the recipient complete Full KYC in the app for fewer restrictions.

Compliance review

Transfers can be paused for identity verification or sanctions screening. If Coinepay requests documents such as the purpose or source of funds, respond promptly so the review can finish. Never split a transfer, route it through a third party or do anything to avoid these checks.

Need help?

If a transfer is delayed, shows an unexpected status, or you entered the wrong details, reach out through Coinepay support or our Telegram channel with your transfer reference ready. For PhonePe wallet status, KYC level and limits, your recipient should check the PhonePe app directly.

FAQ

What details do I need to send money to someone's PhonePe?

You need the mobile number registered to their PhonePe account or their UPI ID (in the form name@handle), plus the recipient's full name exactly as registered. For a bank-deposit payout, Coinepay will ask for the bank-account details instead.

Will the money go into the PhonePe wallet balance directly?

PhonePe distinguishes between paying a mobile number by UPI (often funded from a linked bank account) and crediting the wallet balance. Choose the wallet/UPI payout in Coinepay and confirm in the PhonePe app which identifier is needed. If a wallet credit cannot be delivered, a bank deposit to the linked account is an alternative.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

Coinepay shows the exchange rate and any fees on the confirmation screen before you confirm, so you can review exactly how much INR the recipient receives. Check the app for the current figures for your specific transfer.

Why might the transfer fail or be held?

Common causes include an incorrect number or UPI ID, a name that does not match the registered account, the recipient's wallet reaching its limit, an unverified or Small PPI wallet that cannot receive the funds, or a compliance review. Respond to any document request from Coinepay to clear a review.

Do I need to verify my identity to send?

Yes. You must register with Coinepay and complete KYC before sending. Every transfer is also subject to sanctions screening and local regulations, and Coinepay may ask for the purpose or source of funds.
