You can choose a Proton Mail plan, enter your Coinepay virtual card at Proton’s checkout, and manage the subscription from your Proton account. Payment is subject to Proton’s card requirements and its checkout checks, so review the plan and billing details before you confirm.
What you need before subscribing
- A Proton account: Create one through Proton’s official sign-up page, or sign in to your existing account. You can start with Proton Free and upgrade later.
- A Coinepay virtual card: Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Your card number, expiry date, and CVV are available after issuance in Coinepay’s app or self-service dashboard.
- Enough available funds: Check the amount Proton will charge for your chosen plan and billing period, including any taxes shown at checkout. Check your available balance in Coinepay before submitting payment.
- Your real billing details: Proton asks for a billing country and says it should be your country of tax residency. Use accurate information that is consistent with your account and payment details.
Proton says it accepts major credit and debit cards, but that does not establish whether a particular virtual card qualifies or will be accepted. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets Proton’s card requirements before you buy. If you are unsure which Coinepay card details or spending settings apply, check the app or ask support rather than guessing.
Choose the right Proton Mail plan
Proton Mail’s individual options are Proton Free, Mail Plus, and Proton Unlimited. Proton’s broader pricing page may label the last option simply Unlimited. Proton also lists Proton Duo for up to two users and Proton Family for up to six users. For organizations, its mail-inclusive options include Mail Essentials, Workspace Standard, Workspace Premium, and an Enterprise option that requires a quote.
Plan features, available billing periods, taxes, and the amount due depend on what you select and the checkout presented to you. Compare the plans on Proton’s official pricing page, then check the final order summary. A yearly plan can display a monthly equivalent while charging for the full billing period at checkout; use the total due, not just the displayed monthly figure, when checking your card balance.
How to sign up and pay with your Coinepay card
- Prepare your card. Sign in to the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app. Locate your virtual card and check its card number, expiry date, CVV, and available balance. If you have not registered and completed identity verification, do that first.
- Open Proton’s official sign-up flow. Go to Proton’s sign-up page at proton.me/signup in your browser. Create an account using your real details and follow the on-screen account setup prompts. If you already have a Proton account, sign in at account.proton.me instead.
- Select a paid plan. Choose the Mail plan that fits your needs during sign-up. From an existing account, click Upgrade and select a plan. You can also create a Proton Free account first, then upgrade after signing in.
- Choose a billing period. Compare the options Proton offers for your plan. Review the order summary, including the total charge and any taxes shown, before proceeding.
- Enter the card details. At card checkout, enter the Coinepay card number, expiry date, and CVV exactly as displayed. Set the billing country to your actual country of tax residency, as Proton instructs. Complete any other requested billing fields accurately.
- Complete verification if prompted. Card checkout may send you through 3-D Secure verification. Follow the prompts provided by the payment flow; do not close the verification window or return to checkout before it finishes.
- Confirm and check the result. Submit payment once, then wait for Proton to show the outcome. After a successful purchase, open Settings → All settings → Subscription in your Proton account to confirm the plan and renewal date.
If checkout displays a card eligibility or region restriction, do not change your billing country to bypass it. Check the stated requirement with Proton and contact Coinepay support about your card before trying again. Neither having a virtual card nor seeing a plan in Proton’s pricing page guarantees that a payment will be approved.
What to do if the card is declined
Read the error on Proton’s checkout before retrying. A decline can come from the amount due, entered details, a verification step, or a payment eligibility check. Repeatedly submitting the same information without addressing the cause may not help.
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| “Payment failed” | Proton identifies insufficient funds, incorrect card details, and a daily payment limit as possible causes. Compare the full checkout total with your available balance, recheck the card number, expiry, and CVV, and review any applicable card settings in Coinepay. Ask Coinepay support if a limit or card-side decline needs clarification. |
| Billing details or country problem | Make sure the billing country is your actual country of tax residency and correct any mistyped details. If Proton’s checkout does not allow your details or payment, ask Proton about its requirements; do not use someone else’s address or an inaccurate country. |
| “Authorization failed” or an unfinished 3-D Secure step | Proton associates this message with unsuccessful 3-D Secure verification, although it can also occur with a cancelled PayPal recurring-payment agreement. For a card payment, complete any verification prompt and keep the checkout open until it returns a result. If no usable prompt appears, contact Coinepay support about the card transaction and Proton support about the checkout attempt. |
| Card-type or merchant-region check | Proton says it accepts major credit and debit cards. If checkout rejects the card based on eligibility or region, ask Proton what its message means and contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets the stated requirement. Do not assume a different billing country will resolve it. |
| No clear error after submission | Proton notes that an interrupted connection can cause a payment to fail without displaying an error. Check Settings → All settings → Subscription and your card activity before attempting another payment, so you know whether the first attempt went through. |
When contacting support, share the error text, the plan and billing period you selected, and the approximate time of the attempt. Never send your full card number or CVV in a support message.
Manage renewals, payment details, and cancellation
Proton subscriptions renew automatically. In your Proton account, go to Settings → All settings → Subscription to review your plan and renewal date or find the cancellation controls. Saved cards and PayPal details are in the Payment methods section of that page. Removing a saved card does not cancel a subscription; use Proton’s cancellation flow if you want to stop renewal.
Proton says cancellation to Free leaves a paid plan active through the current billing period. If you change to another paid plan, Proton says the change takes effect immediately with a prorated credit for unused time. Review the terms presented for your particular change before confirming it, especially if you are downgrading early.
If you need a refund, check Proton’s current terms and contact Proton directly. Under terms last modified October 9, 2026, a full refund for an eligible purchase through Proton’s official channels requires both cancellation and a support-form refund request within 30 days of the initial purchase; Proton limits that option to once per user. After that window, refunds are discretionary. An approved refund goes to the original payment method in the original currency, so keep your Coinepay card and transaction information available while the request is handled.
