Kakao Ads lets businesses reach KakaoTalk and Daum audiences through Kakao Moment and the separate Kakao Global DSP. Payment on these platforms runs through a prepaid wallet called BizWallet, which you top up before your campaigns spend. This guide explains how to prepare a Coinepay virtual card, create and fund your wallet, and what to do if a top-up is declined. It focuses on Kakao Moment's overseas BizWallet flow, which is where most international advertisers pay by card.
Before you start
You will need a few things ready so checkout goes smoothly:
- A verified Coinepay account. Register at Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC) before you try to create a card. Card issuance and fund services are provided by Coinepay's licensed partner financial institutions.
- A Coinepay virtual card. Once issued, you get an instant card number, expiry date and CVV in the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app.
- A Kakao Account and a Kakao Moment ad account. An overseas business can create an overseas ad account using a registered D‑U‑N‑S number.
- Your real business billing details. Use the genuine name and address tied to your Coinepay account and your Kakao business.
Note that Kakao Moment and Kakao Global DSP are different products with different sign-up and payment paths. Global DSP uses a separate account registered with an email address rather than a personal Kakao Account, and it deducts ad fees from prepaid Cash. The steps below cover Kakao Moment; if you use Global DSP, follow the pricing and payment prompts inside that platform.
How Kakao Moment billing works
Kakao Moment does not sell named monthly subscription tiers. Instead it groups campaigns into categories such as Performance Ads, Guaranteed Ads and Engagement Ads, with formats including Kakao Bizboard, Display Ads, Video Ads, Channel Message, Product Catalog and Engagement Ads. Most pricing is set by real-time bidding using charging methods such as CPC and CPM, so what you actually pay depends on your bids and delivery, not a flat plan fee.
A few placements have fixed rates. At the time of writing (October 2026), KakaoTalk Channel messages cost ₩15 per send without audience targeting or ₩20 with targeting, and a Daum Shopping CPT slot is listed at ₩3,000,000 per week or ₩10,000,000 per month, all excluding VAT. Overseas BizWallet charges are recorded in KRW, and Kakao's guide notes overseas-wallet ad spending is zero-rated for Korean VAT except for China. Because rates change, always confirm the current figures on Kakao's official pages before you commit.
Step-by-step: fund your BizWallet with a Coinepay card
- Issue your Coinepay virtual card. In the Coinepay app, create a card and note the number, expiry and CVV. For ad spending you can dedicate a single card to Kakao Ads and set a spending limit that suits your budget.
- Create a BizWallet. In Kakao Moment, go to MY → My BizWallet and create a wallet. An overseas business creates an overseas wallet.
- Link the wallet to your ad account. Open Ad account → Settings → BizWallet management and connect the wallet you created.
- Open Cash management. Go to BizWallet details → Cash management to top up or later request a refund.
- Start a top-up. Under Cash management → Paid balance → Top up, enter or select an amount. The stated per-top-up range is ₩1,000–₩1 billion.
- Choose the card payment method. For an overseas BizWallet, manual top-ups accept overseas-issued Visa, Mastercard, JCB and UnionPay credit cards, authorized in KRW. Enter your Coinepay card number, expiry and CVV.
- Complete any security step and confirm. If a 3-D Secure or one-time-password screen appears, approve it, then confirm the payment. Your paid balance updates once the charge clears, and your campaigns draw down from it as they deliver.
Automatic card payment and bank-deposit top-ups are available only for domestic prepaid wallets, not overseas wallets. For an overseas wallet you top up manually each time, so plan to refill before your balance runs out.
Channel Message payments
If you run KakaoTalk Channel Message ads, Kakao collects the estimated send cost through your Cash balance (or an auto-payment card on domestic wallets) before registering the send. Amounts for messages that are not actually sent are returned to your wallet automatically, so keep enough paid Cash available to cover the estimate.
Troubleshooting a declined card
If a top-up fails, work through the most common causes below. The exact on-screen wording varies, so focus on the likely reason rather than a specific error code.
Insufficient balance or over the card limit
Kakao lists a card being over its limit as a reason a payment can be rejected. Check that your Coinepay card has enough available balance for the top-up amount plus VAT where it applies, and that any per-card spending limit you set in the Coinepay app is high enough. Adjust the limit in the dashboard and retry.
Card unusable or reported lost
Kakao also cites a card that is unusable or reported lost. In the Coinepay app confirm the card is active and not frozen, and that you copied the number, expiry and CVV correctly with no extra spaces.
Billing address or details mismatch
Enter the billing details exactly as they appear on your Coinepay account. A mismatch between the name or address on file and what you type can cause a decline. Use your real information—never a made-up address.
3-D Secure or verification failure
If the payment stalls at a verification prompt, make sure you can receive the confirmation from Coinepay and complete it promptly. If it times out, restart the top-up from Cash management → Paid balance → Top up.
Card type or region checks
The overseas BizWallet flow is built for overseas-issued Visa, Mastercard, JCB and UnionPay credit cards authorized in KRW. Kakao's separate keyword-ad guide notes debit/check cards cannot be used for automatic payment—that statement applies to auto-payment, not necessarily to every manual top-up. Kakao documents overseas-card funding but does not publish an exhaustive list of eligible countries or card types. If you are unsure whether your Coinepay card meets a requirement, contact Coinepay support to confirm before you buy, and check Kakao's documentation for the current rules.
Refunds and stopping spend
To pause spending, use the ON/OFF control on the Kakao Moment dashboard to switch an ad off. Turning an ad off is not the same as deleting the ad account, which is a separate master-account action with its own prerequisites.
For refunds of paid, unused Cash, use BizWallet details → Cash management → Paid balance → Refund. Promotional or free Cash is not refundable. For overseas wallets, self-service refunds are card-payment cancellations only, not bank transfers; the guide states a card cancellation takes 3–5 business days to appear. If a charge is too old to cancel, Kakao directs you to its customer support about the amount shown as non-refundable. Guaranteed placements follow their own cancellation rules and may incur a termination fee, so review the specific format's terms first.
Manage your card in Coinepay
Keep an eye on your Coinepay card balance and transactions from the 24/7 self-service dashboard or the mobile app (iOS and Google Play). Businesses running several platforms can issue a dedicated virtual card for each ad account and set custom spending limits per card, which makes reconciling Kakao spend against other channels easier. For account or card questions, reach Coinepay support or the Coinepay Telegram.

Why was my card declined when topping up BizWallet?
Common causes Kakao documents include a card over its limit, an unusable card, or one reported lost. Also check for a billing-detail mismatch, an unfinished 3-D Secure step, or card-type and region restrictions. Verify your Coinepay card is active with enough balance, then retry.
