Japan Airlines (JAL) sells tickets for individual itineraries, not a flight subscription. If you want to pay with a Coinepay virtual card, choose your flight and fare first, then check the payment methods offered for your purchase region and itinerary. This guide covers what to prepare, how to complete checkout, and what to check if the payment fails.
Before you book: fare, account and card
JAL’s ticket price depends on the itinerary and available fare. For Japan domestic flights, fare names include Flex, Saver, Special Saver, Round Trip Saver and Promotion. Other domestic fares, such as Sky Mate Fare and Senior Citizen Fare, have eligibility conditions. International fare names vary by destination: for example, JAL lists Special Saver, Semi-Flex and Flex for North and Latin America, but Special, JAL Mahalo and Flex for Hawaii. Cabin class and fare flexibility are separate choices. Review the fare rules, purchase deadline and final price on JAL’s official booking pages before paying.
You do not need to treat JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) as a paid ticket plan. JMB is JAL’s loyalty program; enrollment has no registration or annual membership fee. If you want a Japan-region JMB account, JAL’s app offers new-member enrollment: verify your email address, enter your real details and receive a frequent-flyer number. You can also buy a ticket without signing up for JMB where JAL offers that booking option.
To use Coinepay card services, register with Coinepay and complete identity verification. Your virtual card provides a card number, expiry date and CVV. Open the Coinepay app or self-service dashboard to check your available funds and card details before starting JAL checkout. Check the app or contact Coinepay support if you need guidance on funding the card, applicable limits or payment verification.
JAL lists several card brands and products for Japan domestic and Japan-region international purchases, but the options shown can differ by purchase region and checkout screen. Do not assume that a virtual card will be accepted for a particular booking. If you are unsure whether your card meets JAL’s requirements for the checkout you are using, confirm with Coinepay support before you buy.
How to pay for a JAL ticket step by step
- Search for your flight on JAL’s official website. Enter your origin, destination, travel dates and passenger details. Choose the correct purchase region and use your real identity and contact information. JAL has been rolling out a redesigned overseas-region booking site, so screen labels and page order may vary.
- Select an itinerary and fare. Compare the available flights, cabin classes and fare rules. Check whether the fare permits changes or refunds, and note its purchase deadline. An earlier fare-specific deadline can override a general payment deadline.
- Review the complete booking. Make sure passenger names match travel documents, and inspect the total displayed by JAL, including applicable taxes and surcharges. Ticket prices vary by route, booking time and availability; use JAL’s official booking pages for a current quote.
- Choose card payment if offered. For a Japan domestic booking, JAL labels the option “Pay by Credit Card.” For an international booking, proceed to the online payment options shown for your purchase region. Select an eligible card option only if it matches the card you actually hold.
- Enter your Coinepay card information. Copy the card number, expiry date and CVV from the Coinepay app or dashboard. Enter your real cardholder and billing details as requested, and complete any payment-authentication prompt you receive. Review the amount and currency before confirming.
- Save the booking confirmation. For a domestic purchase, retain the ticket number displayed after payment. For an international purchase, JAL sends an e-ticket by email or makes it available through its website. Check that you have a confirmed ticket rather than relying solely on a payment-attempt screen.
If you want to store a card in your JMB profile for future purchases, JAL directs logged-in members to Mileage & JAL Card → Registered information → Credit card information registration, followed by one-time-password verification. This is an optional saved-card setting, not recurring billing for flights.
Payment choices and rules worth checking
JAL’s Japan domestic card page lists Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club International, UATP and JALCARD; it excludes JAL PassAge for domestic tickets. The Japan-region international card page also lists JAL PassAge. These are JAL’s published options, not a statement that any particular Coinepay card is eligible. Confirm what your own checkout offers.
Other payment methods may appear for eligible bookings. JAL lists e JAL Points for eligible Japan-region JMB members; for international tickets, any remaining amount is paid by card, and miles must be converted before starting the purchase. Certain Japan domestic bookings also offer convenience-store cash payment, participating Pay-easy ATMs or supported internet-bank transfers, with different deadlines and availability. For international online bookings, JAL lists Apple Pay on supported Apple devices, subject to its card requirements and the options at checkout.
If JAL offers international Multi Currency Pricing, inspect the displayed conversion and total before choosing it: JAL applies a conversion fee. This option is unavailable for online ticket purchases departing Russia or India and for online reservation changes. The currency choices at checkout should not be confused with a promise about currencies available on your Coinepay card; check the Coinepay app or support for card-specific information.
If your Coinepay card is declined
A failed attempt does not, by itself, identify the cause. Avoid repeatedly submitting payment without checking whether JAL created a booking or ticket. Work through these checks:
- Insufficient available funds: Compare the available amount shown in Coinepay with JAL’s final checkout total, including applicable taxes and surcharges. If JAL offers a different payment currency, review its final total before trying again. Check the app or contact support if your available amount or a card limit is unclear.
- Card details or billing mismatch: Re-enter the number, expiry date and CVV exactly as shown in Coinepay. JAL identifies incorrect card number, expiry, cardholder name or security code as possible causes of an international checkout error. Use your real name and billing details; correct mistakes rather than substituting an address or identity from another region.
- 3-D Secure or another authentication step: JAL warns that missing 3-D Secure registration can cause domestic card-payment errors. Complete any authentication prompt presented. If it does not appear, times out or fails, ask Coinepay support whether your card can complete the verification required for this purchase.
- Purchase-region or merchant checks: Payment options can vary by JAL purchase region and checkout. Confirm that your selected card option is available there and that your passenger and billing details are accurate. Do not change regions or details to bypass a restriction. Ask Coinepay support to help confirm whether the card meets the checkout’s requirements.
- Booking timing or page problems: Check the fare’s purchase deadline. JAL also notes that some booking details or the timing of an attempt can prevent domestic card payment. If a page fails to load, check your booking status and try the official booking flow again later; do not assume a website error means the card was declined.
JAL does not publish one universal decline message for all these situations. If your details are correct but payment still fails, follow JAL’s advice to contact the card issuer through Coinepay support. Give support the attempted amount, currency, time and any on-screen error, but never send your CVV or a full card number in a support message.
After payment: changes and refunds
Use JAL’s Manage Booking area to request an eligible ticket change or refund. What you can recover depends on the fare and circumstances, not on whether you used a virtual card. For example, JAL’s published domestic pre-departure customer-cancellation charges are 0% for Flex and approximately 5% for Saver; Special Saver is approximately 5% until 55 days before departure and approximately 50% thereafter, calculated under JAL’s fare rules. Charges increase after departure.
For international tickets, the purchased fare rule governs voluntary refunds: a charge may apply, and some fares are nonrefundable apart from eligible unused taxes and fees. JAL says a card refund can take approximately two months to appear. If JAL changes or cancels an international flight involuntarily, different handling applies; tickets purchased through a travel agent should be taken back to that agent. Keep your ticket number and confirmation so you can find the booking and check the rule that applies to your ticket.

FAQ
Do I need a JAL Mileage Bank account to buy a ticket?
No paid membership is required. JAL Mileage Bank is an optional loyalty program, and JAL offers ticket purchasing without treating it as a subscription.
Can I save my Coinepay card in my JAL account?
JMB members can find the saved-card setting under Mileage & JAL Card → Registered information → Credit card information registration. JAL requires one-time-password verification; saving a card does not create recurring flight billing.
What should I check if JAL rejects my card?
Check your available funds, card number, expiry, CVV, real cardholder and billing details, and any 3-D Secure prompt. Then check the fare deadline and payment options for your purchase region. Contact Coinepay support if the details are correct but payment still fails.
Will a refund return to my Coinepay card immediately?
Not necessarily. JAL says international card refunds can take approximately two months to appear. Refund eligibility and any cancellation charge depend on your ticket’s fare rules.
