GhIPSS Instant Pay (GIP) is Ghana's real-time, account-to-account transfer service, operated by the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems. Alongside it, GhIPSS runs Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI), which moves funds between mobile wallets on different networks and between bank accounts and wallets. If you are abroad and want to send money to someone in Ghana, Coinepay Global Remittance can deliver to a Ghanaian bank account or mobile wallet, with the exchange rate and fees shown clearly before you confirm. This guide explains what you need from your recipient and how the transfer works.
Which country and currency this is for
GhIPSS Instant Pay and Mobile Money Interoperability operate in Ghana, and the recipient is paid in Ghana cedis (GHS). You fund the transfer in your own currency; Coinepay converts it and shows you the rate and any fees in the app before you confirm. Ghana's country code is +233: in international format the national number has nine digits after +233, while a domestic number has ten digits including the leading 0. When you enter the recipient's details, follow the format the Coinepay app prompts for.
What you need from your recipient
Before you start, confirm these details with the person in Ghana. Getting them exactly right is the single most important step.
- Registered mobile-money phone number or account ID. For a wallet payout, the destination must be a registered mobile-money wallet, not merely a phone number. Make sure the number belongs to an active wallet.
- The receiving wallet provider. Do not guess the network from the number prefix. Ghana lets subscribers keep their number when they switch networks, so ask your recipient which wallet provider the number is registered with. For example, if the recipient uses GhanaPay, select GhanaPay as the receiving network even if the same number is also used for another mobile-money service.
- The recipient's full name exactly as registered on their wallet or account. A name that does not match the registered account can cause the transfer to be held or rejected.
For a bank-account payout over GIP, you will instead need the recipient's bank, account name and account number as registered. Choose the right payout type in the app based on where your recipient wants the money.
Before you begin with Coinepay
You need a Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. If you are new, create your account and finish verification first. You can manage everything from the 24/7 dashboard or the mobile app on iOS and Google Play. Cross-border transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations, and Coinepay may ask for supporting documents such as the purpose or source of funds.
Step by step: send to a Ghana mobile wallet
- Open Coinepay and start a new transfer. Select Ghana as the destination country.
- Choose the payout method. Pick the mobile wallet payout for your recipient's provider (bank deposit, mobile wallet and cash pickup are supported, depending on the destination). If your recipient wants the money in a bank account over GIP, choose the bank deposit option instead.
- Enter the recipient details. Type the registered phone number or account ID, select the correct receiving wallet provider, and enter the full name exactly as registered. Double-check each character.
- Enter the amount you want to send or want the recipient to receive.
- Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay shows the rate, the fees and the estimated amount your recipient will receive, plus the estimated arrival time, before anything is confirmed. Read this screen carefully.
- Confirm the transfer. Authorise the payment. You may be asked for additional verification or documents as part of compliance checks.
- Track it. Every Coinepay transfer has status tracking. Follow it in the app from sent to delivered.
How fast it arrives and what the recipient sees
GIP and MMI are designed for real-time delivery, and GhIPSS says the GIP platform operates 24/7. With Coinepay, transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, though the actual time depends on the payout method and the destination country; the estimate shown in the app before you confirm is your best guide. When the payout completes, the recipient's wallet is credited and they typically receive an SMS or in-app notification showing the new balance. They do not need a Coinepay account to receive the money.
Recipient wallet limits and verification levels
Mobile-money wallets in Ghana have tiered KYC levels, usually described as minimum, medium and enhanced, each with its own transaction and balance limits set under Bank of Ghana rules. A higher verification tier generally allows larger transactions. Exact figures change over time and can differ by provider, so if your recipient expects a larger amount, ask them to confirm their current limits with their own provider. For example, MTN customers can check via *170# → My Wallet → Check Wallet Limits; other providers have their own menus. If a wallet is near its limit or only minimally verified, a transfer can be delayed or rejected until the recipient raises their tier.
Troubleshooting
Wrong number or wrong wallet
Always verify the destination before you authorise payment. If you realise a mistake after sending, contact Coinepay support immediately through the support channel or Telegram. Be aware that reversals are not automatic for every wallet: recovery is subject to investigation and can depend on whether the funds still remain in the recipient's wallet.
Name mismatch
If the name you entered does not match the registered wallet or account, the transfer may be held or returned. Re-check the spelling against the recipient's registered name and correct it before resending.
Wallet limit reached
If the payout fails because the recipient has hit a daily or balance limit, ask them to check their limits with their provider and either wait for the limit window to reset or upgrade their KYC tier, then try again.
Unverified or inactive wallet
The destination must be a registered, active mobile-money wallet. If it is unverified, the recipient should complete their provider's verification before you send.
Debited but no credit confirmed
If your funds were taken but you have not seen a delivery confirmation, do not immediately send a second transfer. Check the live status in the Coinepay app and contact support with your transfer reference.
Compliance review
Transfers may be paused for sanctions screening or a compliance review, and Coinepay may request documents such as the purpose or source of funds. Respond promptly with accurate information to help release the payment. Use your real identity and real details; never attempt to split transfers or route money through third parties to avoid checks.
If something stays unresolved
For a Coinepay transfer, your first point of contact is always Coinepay support. For a dispute involving a Ghanaian financial-service provider, start with that provider; the Bank of Ghana publishes a further complaints route at [email protected]. You can learn more about Coinepay's remittance service on the Coinepay home page.

FAQ
Can I send to a GhIPSS Instant Pay account if I only have a phone number?
For a mobile wallet payout, the destination must be a registered, active mobile-money wallet linked to that number. Confirm the wallet provider with your recipient, since numbers can be kept when switching networks, and enter the full name exactly as registered.
How fast will the money reach Ghana?
Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and destination. Coinepay shows an estimated arrival time before you confirm, and you can follow the status in the app.
What are the fees and exchange rate?
Coinepay shows the exchange rate and all fees clearly in the app before you confirm the transfer, so you can review the amount your recipient will receive before authorising payment.
What if I sent to the wrong number?
Contact Coinepay support immediately. Reversals are not automatic for every wallet and may depend on investigation and whether the funds remain in the recipient's wallet, so verify the destination carefully before authorising.
Do I need to verify my identity to send money?
Yes. You must register and complete KYC before sending. Transfers are also subject to sanctions screening and local regulations, and Coinepay may request documents such as the purpose or source of funds.
