mKesh is a mobile money wallet used in Mozambique, operated by Carteira Móvel, SA under Tmcel. If you have family, friends or business partners there, Coinepay Global Remittance lets you send money from abroad straight to a recipient's mKesh wallet, where it arrives as Mozambican meticais (MZN). This guide walks through the details you need, the step-by-step flow in the Coinepay app, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Before you start

mKesh accounts are tied to Tmcel mobile numbers in Mozambique, published in the nine-digit formats 82xxxxxxx or 83xxxxxxx. Payouts you send through Coinepay are converted to and delivered in Mozambican meticais (MZN), so your recipient receives local currency in their wallet.

To use Coinepay for remittance you must first register and complete identity verification (KYC). If you have not done so, create an account at Coinepay or download the app for iOS or Android. All transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations, and Coinepay may ask for supporting documents such as the purpose of the transfer or the source of funds.

What you need from your recipient

Collect these details before you begin, and double-check each one with the recipient directly:

  • The registered mKesh mobile number in full (the 82 or 83 Tmcel number linked to their wallet).
  • The recipient's full name exactly as registered with mKesh. Tmcel registers mKesh accounts against an accepted identity document, so the name on the wallet must match what you enter.
  • Confirmation that the wallet is active and able to receive the amount you plan to send (see wallet levels below).

Entering the wrong number or a name that does not match the registered account is the most common cause of delays and failed payouts, so confirm both before you send.

Step-by-step: send money to mKesh

  1. Open Coinepay and start a transfer. Sign in to the app or the 24/7 self-service dashboard and choose the option to send money or make a new remittance.
  2. Choose Mozambique as the destination. Select the country and then pick the mobile wallet payout method, choosing mKesh from the list of supported wallets.
  3. Enter the recipient's details. Type the mKesh mobile number and the recipient's full name exactly as it is registered. Add any other information the app requests, such as your relationship to the recipient or the purpose of the transfer.
  4. Enter the amount. You can usually enter the amount in your own currency or in the meticais the recipient will receive.
  5. Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay shows the exchange rate, any fees and the final amount your recipient will receive in MZN before you confirm, along with the estimated arrival time. Check these figures carefully.
  6. Confirm the transfer. Once you are satisfied the number, name and amount are correct, confirm to submit the transfer for processing.
  7. Save your tracking details. Each transfer has a status you can follow in the app from submission through to payout.

How fast does it arrive?

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and the destination country. The estimated arrival time for your specific transfer is shown in the app before you confirm, so check that estimate rather than assuming a fixed time.

How the recipient sees the money

When the payout completes, the funds land in the recipient's mKesh balance and they typically receive an SMS confirmation from mKesh. If the confirmation message is slow, Tmcel advises checking the wallet balance or the last-five-transactions statement before assuming anything went wrong. Recipients can manage their wallet on a Tmcel phone by dialling *500# and following the mKesh menu; note that an mKesh USSD session ends after about one minute and twenty seconds, after which they simply dial again.

Recipient wallet limits and verification levels

mKesh wallets in Mozambique operate under the Bank of Mozambique's electronic-money rules (Notice 7/GBM/2024), which set ceilings by customer level:

LevelPer transfer / withdrawalDailyBalance
Level I40,000 MT200,000 MT200,000 MT (plus a 500,000 MT annual transfer limit)
Level II75,000 MT500,000 MT500,000 MT

These are regulatory ceilings, not a guarantee that any individual mKesh wallet can receive up to them; a recipient's own verification level, registration status and the operator's rules all apply. If your transfer would push the wallet past its level's limit, the payout can be rejected. A recipient who needs a higher level can upgrade by completing further verification at a Tmcel shop or an authorised mKesh agent with an accepted identity document.

Troubleshooting

Wrong number entered

If you notice an incorrect mKesh number before confirming, correct it immediately. If you have already confirmed, contact Coinepay support straight away with your transfer reference. An automatic reversal of money sent to the wrong wallet cannot be assumed, so accuracy before you confirm is essential.

Name mismatch

If the recipient name does not match what is registered on the mKesh account, the payout may be held or returned. Ask the recipient for the exact name on their wallet and make sure it matches what you entered.

Wallet limit reached

If the recipient has hit a per-transaction, daily or balance limit, the payout can fail. The recipient may need to wait until the limit resets, withdraw some balance, or upgrade their wallet level before you resend.

Unverified or inactive wallet

A wallet that is not fully activated or verified may not be able to receive funds. Ask the recipient to complete mKesh activation using the welcome message on their phone, or to visit a Tmcel shop or authorised mKesh agent to finish registration.

Compliance review

Transfers are screened against sanctions lists and may be paused for review, especially for larger amounts. If Coinepay requests documents such as the purpose of the transfer or your source of funds, respond promptly through the app to help release the payout. Never split a transfer, use a third party or take any other step to avoid these checks.

Delayed confirmation

If your Coinepay status has not updated, use in-app tracking first. On the mKesh side, the recipient can check their balance or last-five-transactions statement before assuming the money has not arrived. If it remains unresolved, contact Coinepay support.

Get help

For anything related to your Coinepay transfer, reach the support team via the help centre or Telegram. You can review rates, fees and status for every transfer in the app before and after you send. Learn more about Coinepay at the main site.

FAQ

What details do I need to send money to an mKesh wallet?

You need the recipient's registered mKesh mobile number (a Tmcel number in the 82xxxxxxx or 83xxxxxxx format) and their full name exactly as it is registered with mKesh. Confirm both directly with the recipient before you send.

What currency does my recipient receive?

mKesh wallets hold Mozambican meticais (MZN), so your money is converted and delivered in local currency. Coinepay shows the exchange rate, fees and final MZN amount before you confirm the transfer.

How long does a transfer to mKesh take?

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and destination country. The estimated arrival time for your transfer is shown in the Coinepay app before you confirm.

What happens if I send to the wrong mKesh number?

Contact Coinepay support immediately with your transfer reference. An automatic reversal of a completed mobile-wallet transfer cannot be assumed, so always double-check the number and name before confirming.

Why might my mKesh transfer be delayed or held?

Common causes are a name mismatch, the recipient reaching a wallet limit, an unverified or inactive wallet, or a routine compliance review. If Coinepay asks for documents like the purpose or source of funds, respond promptly in the app.
