Avis lets you reserve a hire car online and, in several countries, buy a paid Avis Drive membership that bundles discounts with the free Avis Preferred programme. This guide explains how to pay for both with a Coinepay virtual card, where the settings live, and what to do if a payment is declined. Because Avis treats the car-rental counter differently from an online charge, read the pickup section carefully before you book.
Before you start: what you need
- A verified Coinepay account. Register and complete identity verification (KYC) first at the sign-up page, then open the Coinepay app for iOS or Android, or the web dashboard.
- A Coinepay virtual card with its card number, expiry date and CVV, which appear instantly in the app once issued.
- Enough available balance to cover the charge plus any pre-authorisation.
- Your real billing details — name and address — exactly as they appear on your Coinepay profile. Avis checks these.
- Your real driver's licence and, for an Avis rental, a payment card you can physically present at the counter.
Understand what you are actually paying for
Avis separates several things, and the payment rules differ for each:
- Car-rental bookings. Prices vary by location, dates, vehicle and extras. Where offered, Pay Now charges your card at booking, while Pay Later is settled at the rental location.
- Avis Preferred, Preferred Plus and President's Club. These are free, earned loyalty tiers (for example, Preferred Plus after 10 rentals or US$4,000 spent) — you do not pay a subscription fee for them.
- Avis Drive (Drive Silver and Drive Gold). These are paid memberships valid for one year, sold on each country's Drive subscription-selection page and including Avis Preferred membership.
At the time of writing (October 2026), Germany and Spain list Drive Silver at €79 and Drive Gold at €99, while the UK and France list Silver at £99/€99 and Gold at £119/€119. Some Avis promotional and terms pages show a different Silver price, so the amount charged at checkout can differ — always confirm the final figure on the official Avis page for your country before you pay. A paid Drive offering was not confirmed for the U.S., Canada or Australia; the U.S. Avis Preferred page says "Enroll Now for Free."
How to pay for an Avis rental with your Coinepay card
- Go to the Avis website for your country and enter your pickup and return locations, dates and times.
- Choose a vehicle and review its quoted price and included extras.
- Select Pay Now if you want to be charged at booking, or Pay Later to pay at the counter, where that option is shown.
- Sign in to your Avis profile or continue as a guest, and enter the driver details.
- On the payment screen, type your Coinepay card number, expiry date and CVV, and enter the billing name and address that match your Coinepay profile.
- If your bank or Avis prompts for 3-D Secure, approve the confirmation in your Coinepay app to complete the charge.
- Save the confirmation email and reservation number.
How to buy an Avis Drive membership
- Open your country's Avis Drive subscription-selection page (for example avis.co.uk, avis.de, avis.es or avis.fr) and choose Drive Silver or Drive Gold.
- Select a card on the subscription page, then sign in to Avis Preferred or register. In the UK you can also buy Drive by telephone.
- Enter your Coinepay card details and billing information, and complete any 3-D Secure step.
- After Avis confirms membership it emails a customer number. A new UK purchaser uses that number to create an online profile; an existing Preferred member simply signs in and finds the Drive benefits added to their account.
UK Drive requires a qualifying driver's licence and a UK residential address, does not auto-renew (it ends after one year unless you renew, possibly at a different price), and has a 14-day withdrawal period with a full refund if no rental has occurred. Discounts apply only at participating locations and exclude rentals of 28 days or more and certain vehicle categories.
The counter rule you must not miss
Paying online is only half the story. Avis's published card policy is strict about what you present at pickup:
- In the U.S. and Canada, prepaid debit or gift cards cannot be used as credit identification at pickup.
- The same card used for an online Pay Now reservation must be presented at the counter, even where another card can pay at return. Canadian locations do not accept bank debit cards as pickup identification at all.
- UK Avis states that an online prepaid-card booking still requires a non-prepaid card at the counter.
Because these rules depend on the card type and the branch, do not assume your virtual card will satisfy counter identification. Contact Coinepay support through the help centre or Telegram to confirm your card meets a specific Avis requirement before you book, and have an eligible physical card ready for pickup if the location requires one.
Which cards Avis lists
For U.S. rentals, Avis lists Avis Charge Card, American Express, AT&T Capital, China UnionPay, Diners Club International, Discover, JCB, Mastercard and Visa as acceptable charge cards for identification. UK Avis lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club/Discover, and notes Maestro is accepted only in Germany. These lists cover rental identification; the exact brands and card types accepted for a Drive membership purchase were not confirmed on Avis's public pages, so check during checkout.
Troubleshooting a declined payment
Insufficient balance
Open the Coinepay app and confirm your available balance covers the full charge, including any pre-authorisation Avis may place. Top up and retry.
Billing address mismatch
Avis compares the billing name and address you type against your card record. Enter them exactly as they appear in Coinepay — a mismatch is a common cause of a rejected or "invalid card" message.
3-D Secure not completed
If the charge needs verification and you miss the prompt, it can fail. Keep the Coinepay app open and approve the confirmation, then retry once.
Card details entered incorrectly
Re-check the 16-digit number, expiry and CVV. One mistyped digit will stop the payment.
Merchant region or card-type checks
Avis runs country-specific rules — for example UK Drive needs a UK residential address, and some payout and vehicle categories are excluded. If your card or address does not match the market you are booking in, the payment may be refused. Use your real details only; never use a false address or try to bypass regional checks. If you cannot tell why a charge failed, contact Coinepay support with the date, amount and any on-screen message, and contact Avis for the booking itself.
After you pay
Check your confirmation email and your Avis profile. In a U.S. My Avis profile you can update a stored card under My Saved Information → Credit Card → edit → save. Note that rental cancellation is separate from Drive cancellation: Avis's U.S. FAQ lists a US$50 fee for a prepaid rental cancelled at least 24 hours before pickup, US$150 within 24 hours, and no refund for an uncancelled no-show, with credits taking about seven business days. For ad accounts and other recurring spend, Coinepay also lets businesses issue a dedicated virtual card per account with its own spending limit — handy for keeping travel costs separate.

FAQ
Can I use a Coinepay virtual card to pick up an Avis car?
Avis requires specific cards for counter identification. In the U.S. and Canada, prepaid and gift cards are not accepted as pickup identification, and the same card used for an online Pay Now booking must be presented at pickup. UK branches may require a non-prepaid card at the counter. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets a particular location's requirement, and keep an eligible physical card ready.
How much does Avis Drive cost?
At the time of writing (October 2026), Germany and Spain list Drive Silver at €79 and Gold at €99, while the UK and France list Silver at £99/€99 and Gold at £119/€119. Some Avis pages show a different Silver price, so confirm the exact amount on your country's official Avis Drive page before paying. A paid Drive membership was not confirmed for the U.S., Canada or Australia.
Why was my Avis payment declined?
Common causes are insufficient balance, a billing address that does not match your card record, an incomplete 3-D Secure step, mistyped card details, or Avis region/card-type checks. Verify each in the Coinepay app, approve any confirmation prompt, and retry. If it still fails, contact Coinepay support with the amount and any error message.
Does Avis Drive renew automatically?
UK Avis Drive does not auto-renew; membership ends after one year unless you choose to renew, possibly at different prices and terms. UK Drive also has a 14-day withdrawal period with a full refund if no rental has occurred.
Do I need to verify my identity before using a Coinepay card for Avis?
Yes. You must register and complete identity verification (KYC) in Coinepay before a virtual card is issued. Once verified, the card number, expiry and CVV appear instantly in the app so you can pay at Avis checkout.
