To send money from abroad to someone who uses Equitel in Kenya, first check whether Equitel is offered as a payout option for your transfer in Coinepay. You will need the recipient’s registered details, and you should review the payout method, exchange rate and fees in the app before confirming. Do not substitute a different mobile wallet simply because the recipient has an Equitel line.
Equitel in Kenya: what to check first
Equitel is a Kenyan mobile service associated with Equity. The local currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES). Equitel’s My Money service lets users send funds to other mobile wallets, including M-PESA and Airtel Money, but that is a separate journey from receiving an international transfer into an Equitel account. An Equitel number is not automatically an M-PESA or Airtel Money payout destination.
In Coinepay, choose Kenya as the destination and look at the payout methods actually offered for that transfer. Select Equitel only if it appears and the app identifies it as the appropriate method for your recipient. If it does not appear, do not select another wallet or a bank deposit as a workaround without first asking the recipient how they can receive funds. You can contact Coinepay support to ask about the available payout route.
Availability can depend on the destination, the recipient details and applicable checks. Confirm the method in the app for this specific transfer rather than relying on a previous payment or on instructions for sending money from an Equitel line.
Details to get from the recipient
Ask the recipient to check their own Equitel or Equity records and send you the details associated with the account that should receive the money:
- Registered phone number or account ID: use whichever identifier Coinepay requests for the Equitel payout shown in the app. Ask the recipient to copy it from their account records rather than sending a number from memory. Follow the format requested in the transfer form.
- Full registered name: enter the recipient’s name exactly as it is registered for the receiving account, including the correct spelling and order of names where applicable. A nickname or another household member’s name may cause a mismatch.
- Confirmation that the account can receive this payout: ask the recipient to check that their Equitel or associated Equity service is active and that they are using the right account for incoming funds.
Use your real identity and the recipient’s real account details. If the form asks for additional information, provide accurate information rather than guessing. Avoid putting sensitive information, such as a PIN or one-time code, in a transfer note or message. The recipient should not need to disclose either to you to receive a payment.
How to send to Equitel with Coinepay
- Open Coinepay Global Remittance. Sign in through the Coinepay app or self-service dashboard. If you are new, register with Coinepay and complete any required identity verification.
- Choose the destination. Start a cross-border transfer and select Kenya. Enter the amount using the fields provided; the app will show the relevant currency information for the route.
- Choose the recipient’s payout method. Review the available methods and choose Equitel if it is listed for the intended recipient. If the app offers only other wallets, bank deposit or cash pickup, pause and confirm the right way to pay your recipient. Equitel’s own ability to send to M-PESA or Airtel Money does not make either wallet an interchangeable recipient account.
- Enter the recipient details. Use the registered phone number or account ID requested by the form and the recipient’s full name exactly as registered. Check every digit and letter with the recipient before proceeding.
- Review the transfer. Read the displayed payout method, recipient details, exchange rate, fees and estimated arrival time. Coinepay shows the rate and fees before you confirm. If anything differs from what you intended, go back and correct it rather than confirming to see what happens.
- Confirm and track. Submit the transfer only when the review is correct. Save the transfer reference and follow its status in Coinepay. Share the reference with the recipient if they need it to help investigate a missing payment, but never share your password or security codes.
Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes; the actual time depends on the payout method and destination country. Use the estimated arrival time shown in the app for your transfer, and check its status if the recipient has not yet found the funds.
How the recipient can check for the money
Tell the recipient which payout method you selected, the name you entered and when you sent the transfer. Once Coinepay shows it as delivered, the recipient should check the balance and transaction records for the receiving Equitel or associated Equity account, along with any transaction notification they receive. On an Equitel line, Equity directs users to open the phone’s SIM Toolkit and select Equitel; the published My Money menu is part of Equitel’s money services. The exact current screens for viewing an incoming international payout may differ, so the recipient should follow the options shown on their device or ask Equity for help.
Coinepay’s transfer status and the recipient’s account record answer different questions. A submitted transfer has not necessarily reached the recipient, and a notification may not be the only way to verify receipt. If the status says delivered but the recipient cannot find the credit, keep the transfer reference and ask Coinepay support to investigate. The recipient may also need to contact Equity about their account records.
Recipient eligibility, verification and wallet capacity
Before sending, ask the recipient to make sure their receiving service is active and that their registration details match the information they gave you. Verification or account eligibility requirements can affect whether a payout can be received. Do not assume that holding an Equitel line alone establishes eligibility for every incoming transfer route; the recipient should confirm their particular account’s capabilities with Equity if they are unsure.
Receiving accounts and mobile-money services can also be subject to transaction, balance or other capacity restrictions. Check the applicable requirements in the receiving service and the transfer options shown in Coinepay. If a payout cannot proceed because of an account restriction, ask the recipient to resolve it with their provider before attempting a new transfer. Do not divide a payment into smaller transfers to get around a restriction or review.
Cross-border transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay may request documents concerning the purpose of a transfer or the source of funds. Provide accurate documents through the requested channel and wait for the review; do not send through someone else’s account to avoid a check.
Troubleshooting an Equitel payout
Wrong phone number or account ID
If you notice an error before confirming, correct it in the form. If you have already confirmed, check the transfer status and contact Coinepay support immediately with the reference and the correct details. Do not assume a completed payment can be reversed. The recipient should also check whether the number they supplied is the one registered to the intended receiving account.
Recipient name does not match
Ask the recipient to verify their full registered name from their account records. Compare it with your transfer entry, including spelling and name order. If the payment is pending or has failed, use its status and reference when contacting support; do not repeatedly resubmit the same transfer without understanding the mismatch.
Account limit reached or wallet not verified
The recipient may need to check their account’s receiving capacity or complete a provider-requested verification step. They should contact Equity for account-specific guidance. Wait until the issue is resolved, then check which payout methods Coinepay offers before sending again. A different payout method requires the recipient’s agreement and the correct details for that method.
Transfer is under compliance review
Follow any request for identity, purpose-of-payment or source-of-funds documents and monitor the status in Coinepay. A review does not by itself mean the money has been delivered or rejected. If you need an update, contact support with the transfer reference. Coinepay screens customers and counterparties against sanctions lists and does not serve sanctioned persons or residents of jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions.

FAQ
What country and currency should I choose for an Equitel recipient?
Equitel is used in Kenya, where the local currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES). Select Kenya, then check the payout methods and currency information shown for your transfer in Coinepay.
Do I need the recipient’s Equitel number or their account ID?
Use the registered phone number or account ID requested for the payout method shown in Coinepay. Also enter the recipient’s full name exactly as registered.
Can I select M-PESA if my recipient uses Equitel?
Not on that basis alone. Equitel users can send to other wallets, but an Equitel account is not automatically an M-PESA account. Confirm the receiving method with the recipient before selecting it.
What if the transfer shows delivered but the recipient cannot see it?
Ask the recipient to check their receiving account’s balance and transaction records. Then contact Coinepay support with the transfer reference; the recipient may also need to ask Equity to check their account.
