1Password Families is the household plan from password manager 1Password. It covers up to five family members and five guests under one subscription, with a family organizer who invites everyone else. This guide shows how to pay for it with a Coinepay virtual card, from creating your card to completing checkout, and what to try if a payment is declined.

Before you start: what you need

To subscribe directly through 1Password.com and pay with a card, have the following ready:

  • A verified Coinepay account. You must register and complete identity verification (KYC) before you can create and use a card. Start at the Coinepay registration page or download the app for iOS or Android.
  • A Coinepay virtual card. Issuance is instant and gives you a card number, expiry date and CVV you can use at online checkout.
  • Enough balance on the card to cover the plan, plus any taxes 1Password adds to the invoice and any foreign-transaction fee your card provider may apply for a cross-currency charge.
  • Your real billing details. Use the name and billing address tied to your Coinepay card. Accurate details help the payment pass address and security checks.

1Password lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, UnionPay and JCB for direct subscriptions. For accounts on 1Password.com it also lists an eligible U.S. bank account (ACH) or a 1Password Gift Card, but those are separate from card payment. Because 1Password restricts which card networks it accepts, confirm your Coinepay card details in the app first, and contact Coinepay support if you need help checking that your card meets this requirement before you buy.

Note on plans, prices and billing region

1Password's personal plans are Individual and Families. Families is not a per-user tier: its base price includes five family members and five guests, and an extra member who accepts an invitation incurs a prorated charge.

At the time of writing (October 2026), the Families plan was advertised at US$4.49 per month billed annually for an eligible new customer's first year under a 25%-off offer, versus a US$5.99 per month billed annually regular rate. That introductory offer applies only to new customers subscribing directly through 1Password.com with annual billing, and not through Apple, Google Play or other app stores. Prices vary by region and change over time, so always check the official pricing page at 1password.com/pricing/personal for the current figure before you pay. 1Password's documented billing regions are United States/USD, Canada/CAD and European Union/EUR; changing an existing account's region means creating a new account and migrating data.

Step 1: Create your Coinepay virtual card

  1. Sign in to the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app.
  2. Open the card section and create a new virtual card.
  3. Add funds so the balance covers the annual charge plus taxes and any possible fees.
  4. Keep the card number, expiry date and CVV handy for checkout.

Step 2: Create or sign in to your 1Password account

Sign-up begins by choosing Individual or Families; either offers a 14-day trial with no credit card required. If you start the Families trial, the person who creates the account becomes the family organizer and can invite members, who each set up their own account credentials.

If you are on a trial, the first invoice arrives within 48 hours after the trial ends, and canceling before it ends avoids a charge. If you already have an account, simply sign in to add your payment method and start paying.

Step 3: Add your Coinepay card in Billing

  1. Sign in to your account on 1Password.com. You can do this even from a frozen account to restart billing.
  2. Select Billing in the sidebar.
  3. Choose the Families plan if you have not already selected it.
  4. Select Add payment method → Add payment and enter your Coinepay card number, expiry date, CVV and the billing address that matches your card.
  5. Confirm your billing frequency. Annual billing is required to qualify for the first-year discount; you can review or change frequency under Billing → Billing Settings. Note that changing frequency moves an older plan to the current rate.

The Billing page shows your plan, billing frequency, renewal date, payment method and invoices. If a family member cannot see Billing, they likely lack billing permission; the family organizer manages billing. The subscription renews automatically until you cancel. One 1Password employee has explained that in some cases the first-year discount is applied after the payment method is added rather than in the first figure shown, so check the final total on your invoice.

Step 4: Confirm and keep your records

After the payment goes through, the Billing page lists the new invoice. Taxes required in your region appear there, and your card provider may add a foreign-transaction fee for a cross-currency charge regardless of your account's region. You can view your Coinepay transaction in the app to reconcile the amount.

Troubleshooting a declined or failed payment

If your card is declined, work through the checks below. 1Password does not publish a definitive list of issuer-decline reasons, so these cover the usual causes and the website errors the company does document.

Insufficient balance

A virtual card needs enough to cover the full charge at once, including taxes and any foreign-transaction fee. Top up in the Coinepay app so the balance clearly exceeds the invoice total, then retry.

Billing address mismatch

Enter the billing address exactly as it appears on your Coinepay card. A mismatch is a common reason a card is refused. Correct any difference in the house number, postal code or country and submit again.

3-D Secure / authentication

Your card may require an extra verification step. Keep the Coinepay app open to approve the prompt, and make sure your contact details in Coinepay are current so you receive it.

Card network or type not accepted

1Password accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, UnionPay and JCB for direct subscriptions. If your card is refused, check your card details in the Coinepay app and ask Coinepay support to confirm your card meets 1Password's requirement before trying again.

Region and merchant checks

1Password has said it stopped new account creation in Russia and renewal payments from sanctioned regions, citing payment providers that refuse those billing addresses. Use your real identity and real billing details; do not attempt to disguise your location. If you are in a supported region and still cannot pay, the issue may be elsewhere.

Website or browser errors

1Password documents the messages "Your account couldn't be created," "Couldn't connect to 1Password" and "Update your browser to keep using 1Password," which can appear while entering card information. It lists browser or device, connection, VPN, firewall and content-blocker issues as possible causes. Update your browser, disable content blockers for the site, and try again on a stable connection.

If payment still fails after these steps, verify in the Coinepay app that the charge was not placed on hold, then contact Coinepay support with the transaction details. For account-specific billing errors, reach out to 1Password support directly.

Canceling and refunds

You can cancel a directly billed subscription through Billing → Cancel subscription. Paid access continues to the end of the billing period, after which the account freezes; a frozen, undeleted account still lets its owner view and export data, and you can restart the subscription later. 1Password says it cannot refund past charges or unused time remaining at cancellation, and gift-card purchases are final, so cancel before renewal if you do not want to be charged again.

Need a card for other services too?

A Coinepay virtual card can also be used for advertising, AI subscriptions, software and online shopping, and businesses can issue a dedicated card per ad account with custom spending limits. Create and manage everything from the 24/7 dashboard or the iOS and Android apps.

FAQ

Which card networks does 1Password accept for a Families subscription?

For direct subscriptions on its website, 1Password lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, UnionPay and JCB. Check your Coinepay card details in the app and, if unsure, ask Coinepay support to confirm your card meets this requirement before you buy.

How much does 1Password Families cost?

At the time of writing (October 2026), Families was advertised at US$4.49 per month billed annually for an eligible new customer's first year, versus a US$5.99 per month billed annually regular rate. Prices vary by region and change over time, so check 1password.com/pricing/personal for the current figure.

Where do I enter my Coinepay card in 1Password?

Sign in to your account on 1Password.com, select Billing in the sidebar, then Add payment method → Add payment, and enter your card number, expiry, CVV and the billing address that matches your Coinepay card.

Why was my card declined at 1Password checkout?

Common causes are insufficient balance, a billing address that does not match your card, a 3-D Secure prompt you need to approve in the Coinepay app, or an unaccepted card type. 1Password also documents website errors from browser, VPN or content-blocker issues. Fix the relevant item and retry.

Can I use the 14-day trial without a card?

Yes. Both Individual and Families offer a 14-day trial without a credit card. If you start a trial, the first invoice arrives within 48 hours after it ends, and canceling before it ends avoids a charge.
