Cathay membership is a free loyalty programme, but flights, seats and extras are separate purchases you settle at checkout. This guide explains how to create your Coinepay virtual card, add it on the Cathay Pacific website or app, and work through the most common reasons an online card payment is declined. Always use your own real name and billing details, since Cathay links your membership and payment to the passenger travelling.
What you need before you start
- A Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. You can register here and download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
- A Coinepay virtual card issued in your dashboard, with its card number, expiry date and CVV visible.
- Enough available balance on the card to cover the full fare plus any surcharge and taxes shown at checkout.
- Your Cathay membership details (optional but recommended) and the exact passenger name as it appears on travel documents.
Cathay lists these online card brands on its payment-options page: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay and UATP. It also lists wallets and methods such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Alipay, AlipayHK, WeChat Pay, FPS, iDEAL, Sofort, UPI, RuPay, Affirm, Klarna, Atome and Miles Plus Cash. The methods actually offered depend on your market and the product, so the list is not a promise that every option appears for your booking. If you need to confirm your Coinepay card fits the payment form, contact Coinepay support before you buy.
Step 1: Join Cathay membership (free)
You can apply for membership on the Cathay Pacific website, the Cathay Pacific app or the Asia Miles app. At the time of writing (October 2026) Cathay reports no enrolment fee in the US, Hong Kong, UK, Australia and Singapore, so there is no paid membership tier to pay for. The current statuses through December 31, 2026 are Green, Silver, Gold and Diamond, earned through Status Points rather than a subscription fee.
Applicants must be at least two years old. If you are under 18, you will need guardian consent and a one-time password (OTP) sent to the guardian's phone to finish enrolment. Because membership is free, your Coinepay card is used for flights and extras, not for joining.
Step 2: Create or top up your Coinepay virtual card
- Sign in to the Coinepay app or the 24/7 dashboard.
- Open your cards section and create a virtual card, or select an existing one.
- Note the card number, expiry date and CVV, and make sure the balance covers the full total you expect to see at Cathay checkout.
If you are buying several things (for example a fare plus seat selection or extra baggage), keep a little headroom for any surcharge Cathay displays before you confirm.
Step 3: Choose your flight and fare
Search your route and dates on the Cathay Pacific website or app, then pick a fare. Cathay's named Economy fare types are Light, Essential and Flex; Premium Economy, Business and First use fare classes rather than those three Economy types. Fare and add-on costs vary by route and date, so these are not fixed-price plans. Check the live total on the payment page rather than any figure quoted elsewhere.
If you want the eligible member's 24-hour cancellation benefit, sign in during booking, enter your membership number, or sign up in the same browser window as the booking — and make sure the member and passenger names match.
Step 4: Pay with your Coinepay virtual card
- On the payment page, review the total, any surcharge and the available methods.
- Choose to pay by card and enter your Coinepay card number, expiry date and CVV.
- Enter the billing name and address exactly as they appear on your Coinepay account.
- Complete any issuer authentication step if prompted (see 3-D Secure below).
- Confirm the booking. Cathay immediately sends a debit note to the card issuer once an online booking is confirmed.
Cathay may require issuer authentication for Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club or Discover payments. Some card and wallet payments carry a surcharge that is shown before you confirm, so check the final amount matches what you expect on your Coinepay card.
Troubleshooting: common card-declined causes
Cathay's published payment information does not establish that a checkout failure means a specific fault, so treat these as the usual things to check rather than named error codes.
Insufficient balance
Make sure your available balance covers the fare, taxes and any surcharge shown on the payment page. Open the Coinepay app, confirm the current balance and top up if needed, then retry. A total that is higher than expected is often tax or a payment surcharge, not an error.
Billing address mismatch
Enter the billing name and address exactly as they are on your Coinepay account. A mismatch between what you type and what the issuer has on file is a frequent cause of declines. Correct any typo and submit again.
3-D Secure / issuer authentication
If Cathay triggers issuer authentication, you will be asked to approve the payment. Watch for a prompt or confirmation in the Coinepay app and approve it promptly, because these requests can time out. If the page stalls, do not resubmit repeatedly — check the Coinepay app for the approval request first.
Merchant or region checks
The payment methods offered depend on your market and the product you are buying, so a method visible in one country may not appear in another. If your card is refused and you have confirmed balance and billing details, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card is suitable for this purchase, and check Cathay's payment-options page for the methods available in your market.
Site or loading issues
Some travellers have reported the payment page stalling while it loads. If that happens, avoid confirming twice; refresh, start the payment step again, and verify in the Coinepay app whether any charge was placed before you retry.
Refunds and managing your booking
Changes, cancellation, refund requests and refund-status checks are handled in Manage Booking for direct website, app or WeChat Mini Program bookings; travel-agent bookings are refunded through the agent. Eligible members can request a flight refund through Manage Booking within 24 hours for direct bookings made at least eight days before departure and paid in cash or Miles Plus Cash. Under US law, where it applies, Cathay preserves a refund entitlement for a booking made at least seven days before departure. Exclusions include award tickets, Hold your fare, packages, and used or altered bookings.
For the eligible 24-hour service, Cathay specifies seven calendar days for card and PayPal refunds and up to 20 calendar days for other methods. Any approved refund is returned to the card used, so keep that Coinepay card open until the refund lands. Outside an applicable free-cancellation entitlement, refundability and cancellation charges depend on your fare rules.
A note on Hold your fare
Hold your fare is unavailable for departures from India, departures within seven days, or itineraries containing another airline, and its holding fee is generally non-refundable. If you plan to hold a fare, check availability for your route first.
Keep your card details handy
Because features, limits and available currencies can change, check the Coinepay app or contact support for anything specific to your card. Manage everything — card creation, balance, and payment history — from the Coinepay dashboard or app, and reach the team through support or Telegram if a payment needs a second look.

FAQ
Does Cathay membership cost anything to pay for with my card?
At the time of writing (October 2026), Cathay reports no enrolment fee in the US, Hong Kong, UK, Australia and Singapore. Membership (Green, Silver, Gold and Diamond through December 31, 2026) is free, so your Coinepay card is used for flights and extras, not to join. Check Cathay's official page for your market.
Which card brands does Cathay Pacific accept online?
Cathay's payment-options page lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay and UATP, alongside wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. The methods shown depend on your market and product. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card suits the payment form before you buy.
Why was my virtual card declined at Cathay checkout?
Common causes are insufficient balance, a billing address that does not match your Coinepay account, an incomplete 3-D Secure approval, or a payment method not offered in your market. Check your balance and details in the Coinepay app, approve any authentication prompt, then retry or contact support.
How long does a Cathay refund take to reach my Coinepay card?
For Cathay's eligible 24-hour cancellation service, card and PayPal refunds are specified at seven calendar days and other methods up to 20 calendar days. Refunds go back to the card used, so keep your Coinepay card open until it arrives.
Will I be charged immediately after booking?
Cathay says it immediately sends a debit note to the card issuer once an online booking is confirmed. Make sure your Coinepay card has enough balance for the full total, including any surcharge shown before you confirm.
