If someone you support uses a Mukuru Wallet, you can fund it from overseas with a cross-border transfer through Coinepay Global Remittance. This guide explains where the Mukuru Wallet is used, exactly what information you need from your recipient, how to set up a mobile-wallet payout step by step, and what your recipient sees when the money lands.

Where the Mukuru Wallet is used

The Mukuru Wallet covered here is the one Mukuru runs in Malawi. Funds in it are denominated in Malawi kwacha (MWK), and the wallet is tied to the customer's own registered mobile number rather than a long bank-style account number. The wallet is for registered Mukuru customers who are 18 or over and who have passed Mukuru's identity checks.

Mukuru organises wallet funds into pockets. Money received from outside the country lands in the recipient's Moyo Pocket, which is the pocket used for international and aid receipts, while domestic transfers and cash-ins sit in the Nyanja Pocket. Funds can be moved from the Moyo Pocket to the Nyanja Pocket, but not the other way, and moving them may forfeit a cash-out benefit — so it is worth letting your recipient know the money will arrive in their Moyo Pocket.

What you need before you send

Coinepay does not match a phone number against a name for you, and Mukuru's own wallet terms state that it does not verify a mobile number against the intended payee and takes no responsibility for incorrect details supplied by the sender. Because a submitted wallet instruction cannot be stopped or reversed, get these right before you confirm:

  • The recipient's registered Malawi mobile number — the number the Mukuru Wallet is linked to. Confirm the digits directly with your recipient.
  • The recipient's full name exactly as registered with Mukuru. A nickname or spelling variation can hold up a payout.
  • The payout country and method: Malawi, mobile wallet.

Double-check the number by sending it back to your recipient in a message and asking them to confirm each digit. A single wrong digit can route money to the wrong person with no reversal.

Step by step: send to a Mukuru Wallet with Coinepay

  1. Register and verify first. Create your account at Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC). Cross-border transfers are subject to KYC, sanctions screening and local rules before they can be sent. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Start a new transfer. In the Coinepay app or dashboard, open Global Remittance and choose Malawi as the destination.
  3. Choose the mobile-wallet payout method. Select mobile wallet and pick the Mukuru Wallet option for Malawi. Coinepay supports bank deposit, cash pickup and mobile-wallet payouts; here you want the wallet option.
  4. Enter the recipient's details. Type the registered Malawi mobile number and the recipient's full name exactly as held by Mukuru. Enter the amount you want to send or the amount you want them to receive.
  5. Review the rate and fees. Before you confirm, Coinepay shows the exchange rate, the fee and the amount that will reach the wallet in MWK, along with the estimated arrival time. Read this screen carefully — nothing is charged until you approve it.
  6. Confirm and pay. Approve the transfer. You may be asked for information such as the purpose of the transfer or your source of funds; providing it promptly keeps your transfer moving.
  7. Track the status. Every transfer has live status tracking in the app. You will see it move from submitted to paid out, and you can share the reference with your recipient.

How fast it arrives and how the recipient sees it

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and the destination country, so treat the estimate shown in the app before you confirm as your guide. When the payout completes, the money appears in the recipient's Mukuru Wallet — in the Moyo Pocket for international receipts — in Malawi kwacha. Your recipient manages the wallet through Mukuru's own self-service channels (Mukuru lists WhatsApp on +265 996 145 764 and USSD *435#) and can check their wallet statement to confirm the credit.

Note that Mukuru warns a displayed balance can lag while a payment is processing, and external providers can delay credits. If the Coinepay app shows the payout as complete but the wallet hasn't updated, the recipient should check their wallet statement rather than assume it failed.

Wallet limits and verification, in general terms

Mukuru sets the rules on the receiving side. The Malawi wallet is only for customers who have registered and passed Mukuru's KYC checks, and Mukuru may refuse an application that doesn't meet its requirements. Personal subscriber wallets also carry a maximum daily transaction amount and a maximum account-balance cap, so a wallet that is near its balance limit or has already hit its daily cap may not be able to accept a new credit. If you plan to send a larger amount, ask your recipient to confirm with Mukuru that their verification level and current balance leave room to receive it. For the exact current figures, your recipient should check Mukuru's official Malawi wallet page or ask Mukuru directly.

Troubleshooting

Wrong number entered

Because wallet instructions can't be reversed and the number isn't matched to a name, there is no guaranteed recall. Stop before you confirm and re-check every digit. If you have already sent and believe the number was wrong, contact Coinepay support immediately with your transfer reference — but understand recovery is not guaranteed.

Name mismatch

If the name you entered doesn't match the name registered to the wallet, the payout can be delayed or held. Ask your recipient for their name exactly as it appears in their Mukuru records and make sure your entry matches before confirming.

Wallet limit reached

If the recipient's wallet is at its balance cap or has reached its daily transaction limit, a new credit may not go through. Your recipient can cash out or wait for the limit to reset, then you can retry. Don't send a second time blindly — check the status first to avoid a duplicate.

Unverified or restricted wallet

A wallet that hasn't completed Mukuru's verification may not be able to receive an international payout. Ask your recipient to complete Mukuru's KYC through its WhatsApp or USSD channels before you send.

Compliance review on the sending side

Coinepay screens every transfer and counterparty against sanctions lists and may ask for documents such as the purpose or source of funds. Respond quickly and accurately to clear the review. Never split a transfer, route it through a third party or try to work around checks — doing so can get a transfer blocked.

Status looks stuck

Track the transfer in the app first. If it shows paid out but the wallet hasn't updated, ask your recipient to check their Mukuru wallet statement, since balances can lag. If it is still unclear after a reasonable time, contact Coinepay support rather than resending.

FAQ

What details do I need to send money to a Mukuru Wallet?

You need the recipient's registered Malawi mobile number (the Mukuru Wallet is linked to their mobile number) and their full name exactly as registered with Mukuru. Select Malawi and the mobile-wallet payout method in Coinepay.

What currency will my recipient receive?

Malawi Mukuru Wallet funds are held in Malawi kwacha (MWK). Coinepay shows the exchange rate, fee and the final MWK amount before you confirm the transfer.

How fast does money reach a Mukuru Wallet?

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and destination country. The estimated arrival time is shown in the Coinepay app before you confirm.

Can I cancel or reverse a transfer if I entered the wrong number?

Mukuru's wallet terms say a submitted instruction cannot be stopped or reversed, and the number isn't matched to a name, so recovery isn't guaranteed. Verify every digit before confirming, and contact Coinepay support immediately if something is wrong.

Why might the payout be delayed or held?

Common reasons are a name mismatch, an unverified wallet, the wallet hitting its daily or balance limit, or a compliance review. Respond to any requests for documents and ask your recipient to confirm their wallet is verified and has room to receive.
