IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) is a real-time payment system used in India. It lets people in India receive funds instantly into a bank account, either through a bank account number and IFSC code or through a registered mobile number and MMID (Mobile Money Identifier). If you need to send money to family, friends or a business in India, Coinepay Global Remittance lets you choose an IMPS payout, see the exchange rate and fees before you confirm, and track the transfer from your phone.
This guide walks through what IMPS is, the recipient details you need, the step-by-step sending flow, and what to do if something goes wrong.
What IMPS is and where it is used
IMPS is one of India's instant payment rails, operated under the national payments infrastructure. It is used inside India and settles in Indian rupees (INR). Your recipient does not need to do anything on the IMPS network itself — they simply receive the funds into their Indian bank account or linked wallet. When you send through Coinepay, you pay in your own currency and Coinepay converts to INR for the payout; the rate and any fees are shown clearly in the app before you confirm.
Coinepay can send to recipients in India and most countries and regions, with the exception of jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions. Every transfer is subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations.
Details you need from your recipient
IMPS can be addressed two ways, so ask your recipient which one they prefer and collect the matching details:
- By account number: the recipient's bank account number and the branch IFSC code.
- By mobile and MMID: the registered mobile phone number linked to the account, plus the 7-digit MMID issued by their bank.
In every case you also need:
- The recipient's full name exactly as it appears on their bank account or wallet registration — spelling and order must match.
- The name of their bank, if the Coinepay app asks for it.
- Sometimes the purpose of the payment, which Indian regulations may require for inbound transfers.
Double-check the phone number or account number digit by digit. A single wrong digit can route the money to the wrong person or cause the transfer to fail.
Before you start
You will need a verified Coinepay account. If you have not signed up yet, create an account and complete identity verification (KYC) first. You can manage everything from the iOS app, the Android app or the web dashboard.
Step by step: sending to IMPS
- Open Coinepay and start a transfer. Go to Global Remittance (or Send money) in the app or dashboard.
- Choose the destination. Select India as the destination country and INR as the payout currency.
- Select the IMPS payout method. From the list of local payout options, pick IMPS. If prompted, choose whether you are sending by bank account number and IFSC, or by mobile number and MMID.
- Enter the recipient details. Type the account number and IFSC, or the mobile number and MMID, and the recipient's full legal name exactly as registered. Add the bank name and purpose of payment if requested.
- Enter the amount. You can usually enter either the amount you want to send or the amount you want the recipient to receive.
- Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay shows the rate, any fees and the final amount your recipient will receive, along with the estimated arrival time, before you confirm. Review every field carefully.
- Confirm and pay. Authorise the transfer. Coinepay may ask you to confirm the purpose or source of funds as part of compliance checks.
- Track the transfer. Each transfer has a status you can follow in the app, from processing to paid out. You can also save the recipient for next time.
How the recipient sees the money arrive
Once the payout completes, the funds land directly in the recipient's Indian bank account or linked wallet in INR. They typically receive an SMS or bank notification confirming the credit, and the amount appears in their account or passbook. There is no code for them to redeem with a straightforward bank or IMPS payout — the money simply shows up.
How fast is an IMPS transfer?
Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and the destination country, as well as the hours and processing of the receiving bank. The estimated arrival time for your specific transfer is shown in the app before you confirm, and you can check the live status at any time.
Recipient wallet limits and verification
Indian banks and wallet providers apply their own account limits and verification tiers, and these are set by the receiving institution, not by Coinepay. Lightly verified or basic accounts often have lower caps on how much they can receive in a day or a month, while fully KYC-verified accounts generally have higher limits. If you are sending a larger amount, ask your recipient to confirm their account is fully verified and can receive the payment before you send. Exact limits vary by bank, so check with the receiving bank if in doubt.
Troubleshooting
Wrong phone number or account number
If you notice a mistake before confirming, go back and correct it. If you have already confirmed, contact Coinepay support immediately with your transfer reference. Funds sent to a valid but incorrect account may be difficult to recover, so acting quickly matters.
Name mismatch
IMPS payouts can be rejected if the name does not match the account records. Enter the recipient's full name exactly as registered with their bank. If a transfer is returned for a name mismatch, re-enter the correct details and try again.
Wallet or account limit reached
If the recipient has hit their daily or monthly receiving limit, the payout may be delayed or declined. Ask them to wait until the limit resets or to raise their account tier with their bank, then resend.
Unverified account
Accounts that are not fully verified may not be able to receive certain amounts. The recipient should complete their bank's KYC so the payout can go through.
Compliance review
Some transfers are held for identity verification or sanctions screening, and Coinepay may ask you for documents such as the purpose or source of funds. This is routine — respond promptly and your transfer will continue once the review clears. Never split a transfer, use a third party or try to work around these checks.

FAQ
What details do I need to send money to an IMPS account?
You need either the recipient's bank account number and IFSC code, or their registered mobile number and MMID, plus their full name exactly as it appears on the account. Enter the details carefully, as one wrong digit can cause a failed or misrouted transfer.
How long does an IMPS transfer with Coinepay take?
Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and destination, including the receiving bank's processing. The estimated arrival time is shown in the app before you confirm.
What currency does my recipient receive?
IMPS payouts settle in Indian rupees (INR). You pay in your own currency, and Coinepay shows the exchange rate, fees and final INR amount before you confirm the transfer.
What happens if the name doesn't match the account?
The payout may be rejected. Always enter the recipient's full name exactly as registered with their bank. If a transfer is returned, correct the details and send again, or contact Coinepay support.
Can I send a large amount through IMPS?
Receiving limits are set by the recipient's bank and depend on their verification level. For larger amounts, ask your recipient to confirm their account is fully verified and can receive the full amount before you send.
