Obsidian is free to use for personal and work notes, and you do not need an account to use the app. You do need an Obsidian account to buy an optional service such as Sync or Publish. This guide explains how to prepare a Coinepay virtual card, find Obsidian’s checkout and respond if a card payment is declined. Card acceptance depends on the checkout and payment checks; it is not guaranteed.
Choose what you want to buy
Before adding a payment method, decide whether you need a recurring service or a one-time purchase. At the time of writing (October 2026), Obsidian lists the following options. Check Obsidian’s official pricing page and the final checkout total before paying, as prices and applicable sales tax can change.
| Obsidian product | What it is | Listed price at the time of writing (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Sync Standard | Sync for one vault, with 1 GB of storage | US$5 per user/month, or US$4 per user/month billed annually (US$48/year) |
| Sync Plus | Sync for up to ten vaults, with 10 GB of storage | US$10 per user/month, or US$8 per user/month billed annually (US$96/year) |
| Obsidian Publish | Publish an Obsidian site | US$10 per site/month, or US$8 per site/month billed annually (US$96/year) |
| Catalyst | Optional one-time license | US$25 once |
| Commercial | Optional license for work use | US$50 per user/year |
The Commercial license is optional; using Obsidian for work does not by itself require a purchase. If you qualify for an education or non-profit discount, look under Billing → Discount in your Obsidian account before buying. Obsidian lists a 40% discount on Sync or Publish for eligible customers, but it does not stack with early-bird pricing.
What you need before checkout
- An Obsidian account: Create one or sign in when you are ready to buy. This is separate from using the free app without an account.
- A ready-to-use Coinepay card: Register with your real identity and complete identity verification before using Coinepay card services. Your virtual card’s number, expiry date and CVV are available after issuance in the Coinepay app or self-service dashboard.
- Enough available funds: Allow for the total shown at checkout, not just the advertised plan price. Obsidian uses the country and postal code entered at checkout or in account Billing to determine applicable sales tax.
- Accurate billing information: Enter your real billing name, address, country and postal code. Check the details associated with your card in Coinepay if you are unsure what to enter.
- Access to payment verification: Keep your Coinepay app and any authentication method available in case the card payment requires an additional approval step.
Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions. Coinepay services can vary by jurisdiction, so check the app or contact Coinepay support if you need to confirm availability or a card detail before purchasing.
How to pay for Obsidian step by step
- Prepare your card. Register for Coinepay if you have not already, complete identity verification and open your virtual card in the app or dashboard. Check its available funds and copy the card number, expiry date and CVV securely.
- Open Obsidian’s official site. Create an Obsidian account or sign in to your existing one. Choose the product you intend to purchase rather than assuming the free app requires a subscription.
- Find the purchase option. Open the relevant Sync, Publish, License, Catalyst or Billing section in your Obsidian account and select Buy. For Sync, compare Standard and Plus; for Sync or Publish, check whether you selected monthly or annual billing.
- Review the checkout. Confirm the product, billing interval, quantity if applicable, country, postal code, tax and final amount. If you applied for a discount, verify that the checkout reflects it before proceeding.
- Enter the Coinepay card details. If Obsidian’s checkout offers a card-payment form, enter your virtual card number, expiry date and CVV, along with your real billing details. Obsidian also lists PayPal, WeChat and AliPay among its checkout payment methods, but selecting one of those is not the same as entering a card directly.
- Complete any verification and confirm. Follow any payment-authentication prompt you receive, then wait for the checkout result. Do not repeatedly submit a payment while its status is unclear. After a successful purchase, look for the payment-service receipt and check your Obsidian account for the purchased service.
If you select PayPal instead, note that Obsidian says PayPal purchases are processed in CAD and may involve conversion or issuer fees. To attempt a direct Coinepay card payment, use a card-entry option if one appears. Neither the presence of a card form nor a listed payment provider guarantees that a particular virtual card will be accepted.
What to do if your card is declined
A decline does not, by itself, identify the cause. Read the message shown at checkout, check whether the attempt appears in Coinepay and work through the likely causes below. Obsidian does not publish a definitive list of card-decline messages, so avoid treating a generic error as a specific diagnosis.
Insufficient available funds
Compare the available amount on your card with Obsidian’s final checkout total, including any tax. An annual Sync or Publish selection requires payment for the annual billing period rather than a single month. If funds are insufficient, add funds using the options shown in Coinepay, then retry once the available amount covers the purchase. Check the app or ask support about any funding questions rather than assuming a particular fee or limit.
Billing address or postal-code mismatch
Re-enter your real billing details carefully, especially the country and postal code. Obsidian uses those fields to calculate sales tax, and a discrepancy can also prompt a payment check. Do not substitute a different country or an invented address to obtain a different price or make a payment pass. If the details you see for your Coinepay card are unclear, contact Coinepay support before another attempt.
3-D Secure or another verification step
If checkout requests cardholder authentication, complete the prompt using the method presented. A timed-out, closed or unsuccessful prompt may prevent the payment from completing. Check your app and authentication notifications, then make a fresh attempt if the original one failed. If no prompt appears or verification repeatedly fails, give Coinepay support the time and amount of the attempt and the exact message you saw. Do not share your CVV with support.
Merchant or region checks
A checkout may apply payment-method, issuer or regional checks. Obsidian does not publish a confirmed rule guaranteeing that virtual cards are accepted, so do not assume a decline means you entered the card incorrectly. Confirm that your real country and billing details are accurate and that the purchase is permitted where you live. If the checkout shows a card-type or issuing-country restriction, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets that requirement before you buy. For a merchant-side rejection, ask Obsidian support which payment options are available for your account; do not try to bypass a regional restriction.
Find invoices, request a refund or review billing
In your Obsidian account, go to Billing → Invoices and refunds to find invoices. Obsidian’s published policy offers a full refund for Sync and Publish within seven days of purchase. For an eligible purchase, use Billing → Invoices and refunds → Get refund → Request refund. Catalyst, Commercial and Obsidian Credit are non-refundable under that policy; contact Obsidian support about exceptional circumstances after the seven-day window.
Consider the effect on your data before requesting a Sync or Publish refund: Obsidian says the refund removes the service, cancels auto-renewal and deletes remote vaults or published sites. Local vault data remains. If you intend to stop a service rather than request a refund, review the current cancellation information in your Obsidian account before taking action.
Obsidian Credit is another item you may see under Billing. It can be purchased, gifted and applied to purchases or renewals before another payment method, but it is prepaid account credit, not a Sync or Publish plan. If you are unsure whether a payment succeeded, check both your Obsidian invoice history and your Coinepay activity before attempting the checkout again.
