ERNIE Bot is Baidu's AI assistant, offered through the app now listed as "文心" (Wenxin) and historically known as 文心一言. This guide explains what you can actually pay for, how a Coinepay virtual card fits into the picture, and what to check if a payment is declined. It is an independent help article, not affiliated with or endorsed by Baidu.
First, check whether you need to pay at all
Baidu states that ERNIE Bot became free for individual users on April 1, 2025, after its earlier paid EB4 subscription (launched November 1, 2023) was discontinued. At the time of writing (October 2026), Baidu does not identify a current paid ERNIE Bot subscription tier for individuals, so most people do not need a card to use the assistant on PC or mobile.
What you may still see are optional in-app purchases inside the Wenxin app. On October 17, 2026 the app store listings showed "能量值" (energy value) purchases — for example around $0.99 to $69.99 on the US App Store listing, and ¥1 to §500 on the mainland-China listing. These are listed as consumable in-app purchases, not as ERNIE Bot subscription tiers, and exactly what each one unlocks is not something this guide can confirm. Because prices and items vary by region and can change, always check the current price on the official app store listing before you buy.
Coinepay's virtual-asset-related services are not available to residents of mainland China, and some services are not available in every jurisdiction. Use ERNIE Bot and Coinepay only where each is available to you, and always with your own real identity and billing details.
What you need before you start
- A verified Coinepay account with an active virtual card. You will need the card number, expiry date and CVV, which Coinepay issues instantly in the app.
- A Baidu account for ERNIE Bot. Per Baidu's Wenxin user agreement you can use an existing Baidu account or register a new one at passport.baidu.com or inside the app, including SMS-code or third-party sign-in.
- Enough balance on your Coinepay card to cover the purchase, plus any applicable fees.
- Your real billing details (name, address, country) as held by Coinepay.
Step 1: Set up your Coinepay virtual card
If you do not have a card yet, create a Coinepay account and complete identity verification (KYC), which is required before card services can be used. Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions. Once verified, open the Coinepay app (iOS or Google Play) or the 24/7 dashboard, create a virtual card and add funds. Keep the card details on screen for the checkout step.
Step 2: Sign in to ERNIE Bot
Open the Wenxin app or the ERNIE Bot website and sign in with your Baidu account. Baidu's older membership documents note that benefits are tied to the account you are signed in to at the time of purchase, so make sure you are logged in to the correct account before you buy anything. Using the free assistant generally requires only sign-in — no payment.
Step 3: Open the purchase screen
If you want to make an optional in-app purchase, look for the energy value or membership area inside the app. Baidu's billing guidance has historically pointed web users to profile picture → My Orders and app users to My → Membership Center, though whether these exact menus appear for every user in 2026 is not guaranteed. Select the item you want and proceed to checkout.
Step 4: Pay
How you pay depends on where the purchase is processed:
- In-app purchases on iOS or Android are usually billed through Apple's App Store or Google Play, not directly by Baidu. In that case the charge goes to whatever payment method your Apple or Google account accepts in your region. Add your Coinepay card as a payment method in your App Store / Google Play account settings first, then confirm the purchase.
- Baidu's own checkout, where it applies, has in older agreements named channels such as Alipay, WeChat Pay, Baidu Wallet, Tenpay and carrier billing. Whether a plain card entry field is offered for ERNIE Bot today is not confirmed in current documentation.
Important: Baidu's published materials do not confirm that ERNIE Bot or Wenxin accepts any specific card network (such as Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay or American Express) for these purchases. This guide cannot promise the Coinepay card will be accepted at a given checkout. If card acceptance matters for your purchase, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy, and check the official listing for accepted payment methods.
Step 5: Confirm and save your receipt
Complete any verification prompt (see below), confirm the purchase, and keep the confirmation. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, your receipt will arrive from Apple or Google. You can review Coinepay charges at any time in the Coinepay app or dashboard.
Troubleshooting: card declined or payment failed
Baidu's older auto-renewal agreement names insufficient account balance as a cause of payment failure, and general card checks apply to any online purchase. Work through these common causes:
Insufficient balance
Confirm your Coinepay card has enough to cover the full amount plus any fees. Top up in the Coinepay app and retry. Currency conversion can make the charged amount slightly different from the listed price.
Billing address or name mismatch
Enter the name and billing address exactly as they appear on your Coinepay account. A mismatch is a frequent reason online payments are rejected. Never enter a fake or borrowed address to get around a check.
3-D Secure / verification step
Some payments trigger an extra confirmation. Watch for a prompt or notification from Coinepay and approve it promptly in the app before it times out, then retry the purchase.
App Store / Google Play payment method issues
If the purchase is billed by Apple or Google, the decline may come from their systems. Update or re-add your card in your App Store or Google Play account, make sure the store region and your card details are consistent, and try again.
Merchant or region checks
ERNIE Bot has both US and mainland-China app listings, and whether every sign-in, payment and feature works in a given location is not guaranteed. Use the service only where it is available to you. If the checkout blocks your region, do not attempt to disguise your location — that can breach the merchant's terms. Instead, verify availability on the official listing.
Still failing?
Check your Coinepay app for a decline reason, make sure the card is active, and reach out to Coinepay support or our Telegram if the issue is on the card side.
Managing and cancelling
For any legacy auto-renewal membership, Baidu's agreement said to cancel at least 24 hours before expiry: on iOS via App Store → Account → Subscriptions, and on Android via app → My → Settings → Membership Center → Order Management → Auto-renewal Management. Cancelling preserves the period you already paid for. One-off energy value purchases are consumables and are generally not subscriptions. Baidu's older terms largely exclude refunds after payment but allow an appeal for a technical duplicate charge or failure to deliver a service, subject to Baidu's verification.
