Orange Money is Orange's mobile-money service, widely used across markets in West and Central Africa and beyond. Many families rely on it to receive support from relatives abroad straight to a phone. With Coinepay Global Remittance you can send a cross-border transfer to a supported Orange Money wallet and have your recipient receive it in their local currency. This guide walks through what you need, how the transfer works, and what to do if something looks wrong.

Where Orange Money is used and in which currency

Orange Money is not a single worldwide wallet with one set of rules. The receiving partner, the account profile and the applicable limits depend on the recipient's country. In several West African markets the local currency is the West African CFA franc (FCFA); other Orange markets settle in their own national currency. Because of this, the exact rules, number format and receiving limits vary by corridor, so always confirm the specifics for your recipient's country before you send.

One important distinction: a money transfer credits the recipient's Orange Money account, which is different from a mobile top-up that buys calls, data or prepaid airtime. If your relative needs money they can spend or withdraw, you want a transfer to their wallet, not a top-up.

What you need from your recipient

Before you start, ask your recipient for the following and write it down exactly as it appears on their Orange Money registration:

  • Their registered Orange Money phone number in international format (including the country code). This is the account identifier, so a single wrong digit sends the money to the wrong person.
  • Their full name exactly as registered with Orange Money. Names that do not match the account can cause the transfer to be held or reversed.
  • The destination country, so Coinepay can show the correct payout option and currency.

A transfer to a supported Orange Money mobile wallet does not need a secret code passed to the recipient — the funds post to their account automatically. (Some cash-pickup services use a withdrawal code, but that is a different payout method.)

Before you send: get verified

You will need a Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. If you have not signed up yet, create your account and finish verification first. You can manage everything from the iOS app, the Android app or the 24/7 self-service dashboard. All transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations, and Coinepay may ask for supporting documents such as the purpose of the transfer or the source of funds.

Step by step: send to an Orange Money wallet

  1. Open Coinepay and start a transfer. Choose the option to send a cross-border remittance.
  2. Choose the destination country where your recipient's Orange Money account is held.
  3. Select the Orange Money mobile wallet payout method. Coinepay supports bank deposit, cash pickup and mobile wallets; pick the mobile wallet option and Orange Money as the destination.
  4. Enter the recipient's details — their registered phone number in international format and their full name exactly as registered. Double-check every digit of the number.
  5. Enter the amount you want to send or the amount you want them to receive.
  6. Review the quote. The exchange rate and the fees are shown clearly in the app before you confirm, along with the local-currency amount your recipient should receive and the estimated arrival time. Read this screen carefully.
  7. Confirm the transfer. Once you confirm, the transfer is submitted for processing.
  8. Track the status. Every Coinepay transfer has status tracking in the app so you can follow it from sent to delivered.

How fast it arrives and how the recipient sees it

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and the destination country; the estimated arrival time is shown in the app before you confirm. When the money lands, your recipient normally receives an Orange Money notification and sees the new balance in their wallet, from where they can spend it or withdraw it through an Orange Money agent.

Keep in mind that a success status means the funds have been transmitted to the receiving account — it does not always mean the recipient can withdraw them the same second, because the local operator may apply its own checks before the balance is fully available.

Recipient wallet limits and verification levels

Orange Money wallets have different tiers, and the recipient's profile affects how much they can hold and receive. The naming differs by country. For example, Orange Senegal distinguishes a capped account from a legally identified, uncapped account, while Orange Côte d'Ivoire publishes separate daily, weekly and monthly ceilings for its LITE, FULL and PREMIUM account levels. Regional rules from the central bank (BCEAO) also set ceilings on electronic-money holdings and monthly loading for identified customers in the West African franc zone. The practical point for you as the sender: if your recipient has a basic or unverified wallet, they may not be able to receive or withdraw larger amounts until they raise their tier by presenting valid ID. These are receiving-account rules set locally, not Coinepay limits. If a payout is blocked by the wallet tier, your recipient should visit an Orange Money agent to verify and upgrade their account.

Troubleshooting

Wrong phone number

The phone number is the account address, so an error can send the money to the wrong wallet. Verify every digit and the country code before you confirm. If you spot a mistake after confirming, contact Coinepay support immediately — but understand that once a transfer has been paid out it may not be recoverable, so prevention is far more reliable than a fix.

Name mismatch

If the name you entered does not match the registered account holder, the payout can be delayed or returned. Use the recipient's full name exactly as it appears on their Orange Money registration, and ask them to confirm it rather than guessing.

Wallet limit reached

If the recipient has hit a receiving or holding ceiling for their account tier, the balance may not be available even after a successful send. The recipient needs to upgrade their wallet level or wait for the relevant period to reset, then contact their local Orange operator if needed.

Unverified wallet

An account with expired or missing identity documents may not be able to receive or withdraw. In some markets an international transfer to an unvalidated Orange Money account is held in a pending receipt state, and the recipient must present ID to an Orange Money agent within a set period; if validation does not happen, the transfer can be reversed. Ask your recipient to complete their KYC with Orange before you send.

Compliance review

Because transfers are screened against sanctions lists and local regulations, Coinepay may pause a transfer and request documents such as the purpose or source of funds. Respond promptly through the app to keep things moving. Coinepay does not send to sanctioned persons or to jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions, and you should never split a transfer or use a third party to work around checks.

FAQ

What details do I need to send money to an Orange Money wallet?

You need the recipient's registered Orange Money phone number in international format (with country code), their full name exactly as registered, and their destination country. A standard wallet transfer does not require any code to pass to the recipient.

How long does an Orange Money transfer take to arrive?

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and destination country. Coinepay shows the estimated arrival time in the app before you confirm, and you can follow the status afterward.

Can I cancel a transfer if I entered the wrong number?

Once a transfer is confirmed and paid out it may not be recoverable, so check the country, wallet method, name and phone number carefully before confirming. If you notice a mistake, contact Coinepay support right away.

Why can't my recipient withdraw the money even though the transfer succeeded?

A success status means the funds were transmitted, but the local operator may apply its own checks. Expired ID, an unverified or capped wallet, or a reached receiving limit can block withdrawal. The recipient should verify their account with an Orange Money agent.

What is the difference between an Orange Money transfer and a mobile top-up?

A transfer credits the recipient's Orange Money account so they can spend or withdraw it, while a mobile top-up only buys calls, data or prepaid airtime. To send spendable money, choose the Orange Money mobile wallet payout, not a top-up.
