To send money from abroad to an MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) wallet in Ghana, select Ghana and the MoMo (MTN Ghana) payout method in Coinepay Global Remittance. Before you start, ask the recipient to confirm that their wallet is registered and that the name and phone number they give you match its records.
What is MoMo (MTN Ghana)?
MTN Mobile Money, commonly called MoMo, is a mobile wallet service in Ghana. Its wallet currency is the Ghana cedi (GHS). For this payout method, the recipient needs an MTN Ghana-registered MoMo wallet. An MTN phone number registered in another country is not, by itself, an MTN Ghana MoMo account.
A deposit to a MoMo wallet is different from MTN Ghana’s separate voucher option for someone without a wallet. If your recipient does not have an active MoMo account, do not enter their number as though it belongs to one. Check which other payout methods Coinepay offers for the destination before proceeding.
What details should you get from the recipient?
- Registered phone number or account ID: Ask for the identifier attached to their MTN Ghana MoMo wallet, and enter it in the format requested by the Coinepay transfer screen. Ghana’s country code is +233; a Ghanaian national number has nine digits after the country code and is commonly written locally with a leading 0. Check whether the form wants that 0 or the international format rather than assuming the formats are interchangeable.
- Full registered name: Get the recipient’s full name exactly as it appears on their MoMo registration. Do not use a nickname, shortened name or someone else’s identity.
- Wallet readiness: Ask the recipient to confirm that the wallet is registered, accessible and able to receive the intended payment. They can check their account-specific limits through MTN Ghana if they are unsure.
Confirm these details with the recipient through a channel you already trust. A mistyped number could point to a different wallet, and a name mismatch can interrupt a transfer. The recipient should never give you their MoMo PIN; you do not need it to send a Coinepay remittance.
How to send to a MoMo wallet with Coinepay
- Sign in. Open the Coinepay mobile app or 24/7 self-service dashboard. If you are new, register with Coinepay and complete any identity verification requested for the service.
- Start a remittance. Choose the option to send money, then set Ghana as the destination. Enter the amount as requested on the transfer screen.
- Select the payout method. Choose MoMo (MTN Ghana) if it appears among the available mobile-wallet options. Do not choose bank deposit or another Ghanaian wallet network unless that is what the recipient actually uses.
- Enter recipient details. Supply the recipient’s registered MoMo phone number or account ID in the requested format and their full name exactly as registered. Review each digit and the spelling with the recipient before continuing.
- Review the transfer. Check the payout method, recipient details and amount. Coinepay shows the exchange rate, fees and estimated arrival time before you confirm. Read the displayed information rather than assuming it will match a previous transfer.
- Confirm and track. Confirm only when the details are correct. Follow the transfer status in Coinepay’s app or dashboard, and keep the transfer reference available in case you need help.
Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and destination country. Use the estimated arrival time shown before confirmation for your particular transfer. Availability and completion remain subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations; Coinepay may request documents about the payment’s purpose or source of funds.
How does the recipient see the money arrive?
Once the wallet deposit is completed, the recipient should check their MTN Ghana MoMo transaction notification and wallet activity or balance. Ask them to verify the received transaction rather than relying only on a message from the sender. Coinepay’s status tracking is the sender’s place to check the remittance’s progress; the recipient’s MoMo records show what reached their wallet.
The recipient does not need to initiate MTN’s local *170# → Transfer Money → Mobile Money User flow to receive this deposit. That menu is for sending from a MoMo wallet to another user, not for claiming a Coinepay wallet payout. They should not approve an unexpected request, disclose a PIN or share a one-time code to receive money.
Recipient verification and wallet limits
MTN Ghana applies account-specific wallet and transaction limits. Its published guidance describes different verification profiles, including a minimum profile and higher profiles that require additional information or documents. The recipient’s ability to receive or use a payment can depend on their wallet status and applicable limits; do not assume two MoMo accounts have the same capacity.
The recipient can check their own wallet limits using MTN’s *170# → My Wallet → Check Wallet Limits path and their PIN, following the options displayed on the live menu. MTN’s published menu numbers have differed between help articles, so the live menu should take precedence. If the recipient needs a higher verification profile, they should follow MTN Ghana’s official upgrade process. MTN describes an upgrade path requiring source-of-funds and next-of-kin details for one profile, and identity and proof-of-address documents for a higher profile. Complete any requested checks truthfully before trying to receive an amount the wallet cannot accommodate.
Troubleshooting a MoMo payout
Wrong phone number or account ID
If you notice an error before confirming, go back and correct it. If you have already confirmed, check the transfer status and contact Coinepay support promptly with the transfer reference and the correct recipient details. Do not assume a completed payout can be recalled. MTN Ghana describes a self-initiated reversal process for its own MoMo sends that prompts the recipient for approval; it does not promise an automatic refund, and you should not assume that process applies to a Coinepay remittance.
Recipient name does not match
Ask the recipient to check the full name recorded on their MoMo wallet, including the order and spelling of names. If the transfer has not been confirmed, correct the entry. If it is already in progress, use Coinepay status tracking and ask support what information is needed. Do not replace the name with a different person’s details to get past a check.
Wallet limit reached or wallet not verified
Have the recipient check their wallet status and limits with MTN Ghana. A recipient who has not completed MoMo registration should do so through an MTN service centre or authorised agent with the identity documents MTN requires. If the wallet needs a verification upgrade, the recipient should use MTN’s process. Do not split a transfer or use somebody else’s wallet to work around a limit or identity check.
Transfer under review or recipient cannot see it
Check the Coinepay transfer status and the estimated arrival time shown for that transfer. If Coinepay requests information about the purpose or source of funds, provide accurate documents through its stated process. Ask the recipient to check their MoMo wallet activity and notifications, but do not treat an unverified screenshot or message as proof of receipt. If the status remains unclear, contact Coinepay support with the transfer reference; the recipient can also ask MTN Ghana to check their wallet records.
For help with a transfer, use the Coinepay support channel. Share the transfer reference and relevant details, but never send anyone a MoMo PIN or password.

FAQ
What currency does an MTN Ghana MoMo recipient receive?
MTN Ghana MoMo wallets use Ghana cedis (GHS). Review the amount, exchange rate and fees shown in Coinepay before confirming.
Can I send to any MTN phone number?
No. For a MoMo (MTN Ghana) wallet payout, the recipient needs an MTN Ghana-registered MoMo wallet, not merely an MTN number from another country.
Does the recipient need to give me their MoMo PIN?
No. Ask for their registered wallet phone number or account ID and full registered name. They should keep their MoMo PIN private.
What if the recipient has not received the money?
Check the transfer status and estimated arrival time in Coinepay. Ask the recipient to check their MoMo activity, then contact Coinepay support with the transfer reference if the status remains unclear.
