If a friend, family member or supplier in the Netherlands has asked you to pay them through iDEAL, it helps to understand what iDEAL actually is before you send. Unlike some mobile wallets that hold a balance you top up, iDEAL is a payment method linked directly to Dutch bank accounts. This guide explains what that means for you as an overseas sender, exactly which recipient details you need, and how to send a cross-border transfer to someone who uses iDEAL with your Coinepay account.

What iDEAL is, and where it is used

iDEAL is the most widely used online payment method in the Netherlands, and it works in euros (EUR). When someone pays with iDEAL, they choose their own participating bank and approve the payment inside that bank's app or online banking. There is no separate iDEAL balance and no standalone iDEAL account number: the money moves to and from a normal Dutch bank account held under an IBAN.

iDEAL is also in the middle of a transition. Under the name iDEAL | Wero, it is gradually migrating toward the European Wero wallet, and co-branded logos began appearing in 2026. Even so, the thing your recipient receives money into is their bank account. For that reason, when you "send money to someone's iDEAL" from another country, you are really sending a cross-border bank deposit in euros to their Dutch bank account. Coinepay supports exactly that kind of transfer.

Important: a phone-number or QR-based peer-to-peer send (the Wero style of transfer) is not confirmed as being available to Dutch consumers on the date this guide was written, and its rollout depends on each individual bank. Ask your recipient to confirm their IBAN rather than assuming a phone number will work.

What you need from your recipient

Because the money lands in a bank account, collect bank-deposit details, not wallet details:

  • The recipient's Dutch IBAN (a Netherlands IBAN starts with the country code NL).
  • The full legal name of the account holder, spelled exactly as it appears on their bank account.
  • The name of their bank, if the app asks for it.
  • Any reference or note they want included so they can recognise the payment.

Ask them to copy and paste the IBAN rather than type it, and to double-check the name matches their bank records. A mismatch between the name and the account is the most common reason a transfer is delayed or returned.

Before you start with Coinepay

You will need a registered, verified Coinepay account. If you have not signed up yet, create your account and complete identity verification (KYC) first. You can manage everything from the 24/7 dashboard or the Coinepay app on iOS or Google Play. Transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations, so have your details ready.

Step by step: send money to a Netherlands bank account

  1. Open Coinepay and start a Global Remittance transfer. Select the Netherlands as the destination country and euros (EUR) as the payout currency.
  2. Choose the bank deposit (bank account) payout method. This is the correct option for money destined for an iDEAL-linked bank account. Coinepay supports bank deposit, mobile wallet and cash pickup payouts, but iDEAL money arrives in a bank account, so pick bank deposit.
  3. Enter the recipient's details. Add the Dutch IBAN and the account holder's full legal name exactly as registered. Add any reference your recipient asked for.
  4. Enter the amount. You can usually enter either the amount you want to send or the amount you want the recipient to receive.
  5. Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay shows the exchange rate, any fees and the estimated arrival time clearly before you confirm. Check the final euro amount your recipient will receive and the name and IBAN one more time.
  6. Confirm the transfer. You may be asked for information such as the purpose of the transfer or the source of funds. Provide accurate details to keep the transfer moving.
  7. Track it. Every transfer has status tracking in the dashboard and app, so you can follow it from sent to delivered.

How fast does it arrive, and how the recipient sees it

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and the destination country; the estimate for your specific transfer is shown in the app before you confirm. For a bank deposit in the Netherlands, the money appears as a normal incoming credit in the recipient's bank account. They will see it in their banking app or online banking alongside their other transactions, with the reference you added. There is no separate "iDEAL inbox" to check.

Limits and verification

The published Wero figures sometimes quoted online (such as a system maximum per payment and a cap on the number of sends in a rolling seven-day period) apply to Wero's peer-to-peer send feature where a bank offers it. They are not iDEAL limits and may not apply to your recipient at all. On the sending side, your own transfer amounts are governed by Coinepay and are shown during the transfer; check the app or contact support if you need to confirm them. On the receiving side, any limits come from the recipient's own bank, so if there is a cap they should check with their bank directly.

Troubleshooting

Wrong IBAN or number entered

If you notice a mistake before confirming, go back and correct it. If you have already confirmed, a bank payment to the wrong account can be hard to recover. Contact Coinepay support immediately with your transfer reference so they can advise on the status.

Name does not match the account

If the account holder's name does not match the IBAN, the receiving bank may reject or return the transfer. Ask the recipient for the exact name on their account and re-enter it precisely.

The recipient asked for a phone number instead of an IBAN

Phone-number sending is a Wero feature that is being rolled out gradually in the Netherlands and depends on each bank; it is not confirmed to be generally available. The reliable way to receive an overseas transfer is a bank deposit to an IBAN, so ask your recipient for theirs.

Account limit reached or account unverified

If the recipient's bank account has a limit or verification issue, an incoming transfer may be held or returned by their bank. The recipient should resolve this with their bank, after which you can resend.

Compliance review

Coinepay screens all customers and counterparties against sanctions lists and may ask for documents such as the purpose or source of funds. This is routine; provide what is requested promptly so your transfer can continue. Coinepay does not send to sanctioned persons or to jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions, but the Netherlands is fully supported.

Payment not recognised

If the recipient cannot find the money after the estimated arrival time, ask them to check the account tied to the IBAN you used and look for your reference. If it still does not appear, open the transfer in your Coinepay app to check its status and contact support with the reference.

A note on finality

Once a bank transfer is authorised and sent, it generally cannot be reversed on demand, much as an authorised iDEAL payment cannot be revoked afterwards. That makes it worth taking an extra moment to confirm the IBAN, the name and the amount on the review screen before you tap confirm. For anything you are unsure about, reach out through Coinepay support or our Telegram before sending.

FAQ

Is iDEAL a mobile wallet I can deposit into directly?

No. iDEAL is a Dutch payment method tied to ordinary bank accounts, not a standalone wallet balance. To pay someone who uses iDEAL from abroad, you send a euro bank deposit to their Dutch IBAN, which Coinepay supports.

What details do I need to send money to an iDEAL user?

You need the recipient's Dutch IBAN (starting with NL) and the account holder's full legal name spelled exactly as it appears on their bank account. A reference note helps them recognise the payment.

Can I send to an iDEAL user using just their phone number?

Phone-number sending is part of the Wero feature set that is rolling out gradually in the Netherlands and depends on each bank. It is not confirmed as generally available, so ask your recipient for their IBAN instead.

How long does the money take to arrive?

Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and destination country. Coinepay shows the estimated arrival time before you confirm the transfer.

What currency should I send to the Netherlands?

iDEAL works in euros (EUR), so choose the Netherlands as the destination and EUR as the payout currency. Coinepay shows the exchange rate and any fees before you confirm.
