You can send money to Kenya with Coinepay Global Remittance and choose from available bank deposit, mobile-wallet and cash-pickup options. Before you start, ask your recipient which method they can use and collect the details for that method. This guide explains what to enter, what to review before confirming, and what to do if a payout is delayed.

What you need before sending

Sign in to your Coinepay account and complete any identity verification requested for the transfer. Have your recipient’s full legal name as it appears on their bank, wallet or identity records. You may also be asked for the purpose of the payment or documents showing the source of funds. Use accurate details for yourself and the recipient; transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations.

Kenya’s local currency is the Kenyan shilling (KES). Check the sending and receiving currencies displayed in the Coinepay app or dashboard before you proceed. The available payout choices and information fields are shown as you set up the transfer; ask the recipient to confirm their details rather than relying on an old payment record.

Choose a payout method in Kenya

Bank-account deposit

Ask for the recipient’s full legal name, bank name and Kenyan account number. Kenya does not have a national IBAN format, so do not create an IBAN or substitute one for the account number. Enter the account number in the format requested by the receiving bank and the Coinepay transfer form; there is no single account-number length you should assume for every Kenyan bank.

If the transfer form asks for a branch or local bank code, obtain the exact code from the recipient or their bank. A separate branch code is not required for every payout route. If a direct international bank wire requires a SWIFT/BIC, ask the receiving bank for its code and incoming-payment instructions. Those instructions may also specify correspondent-bank details depending on the sending currency. Use the identifiers requested for this transfer rather than entering an unrelated country’s routing code.

Before confirming, have the recipient check that the account is active and can receive the intended payment. A bank may need additional information to identify an incoming transfer or may review it before crediting the account.

Mobile-wallet payout

M-Pesa is a common mobile-wallet choice in Kenya. Other local wallets include Airtel Money and Equitel Money; choose one only if it appears as an available option for your transfer in Coinepay. Ask the recipient which provider holds their wallet, their full registered name and the mobile number linked to it. Where the form requests an international number, use Kenya’s country code +254 and follow the number format shown in the app.

Have the recipient confirm that the wallet is registered and able to receive the payment. Wallet-provider checks or account restrictions can affect a payout. If the wallet you want is not displayed, choose another available method with the recipient’s agreement or contact Coinepay support before sending.

Cash pickup

Choose cash pickup if it is offered for your transfer and the recipient can visit the pickup location shown in the transfer instructions. Enter their full legal name exactly as shown on the identification they will present. Before sending, confirm that the recipient can reach the selected location and meet its identification requirements.

Tell the recipient to bring an accepted identity document and any collection details provided for the transfer, such as a reference or tracking number if one is issued. The pickup agent may ask for further transfer information before releasing the cash. Follow the collection instructions shown for your particular payout rather than assuming every agent uses the same process.

How to send money to Kenya with Coinepay

  1. Open your account. Sign in through the Coinepay self-service dashboard or mobile app. If you are new, register with Coinepay and complete the identity checks requested before using the service.
  2. Start a transfer and select Kenya. Choose Kenya as the destination, then select the sending and receiving currencies offered for your transfer. Check whether KES is the currency the recipient expects to receive.
  3. Choose the payout method. Select an available bank-account deposit, mobile wallet or cash-pickup option. Use the method the recipient has confirmed they can receive.
  4. Enter the recipient details. Provide the full legal name and the account number, wallet information or pickup details requested on screen. For a bank payout, add a bank or branch code or SWIFT/BIC only where the route requires it, using details confirmed by the recipient’s bank.
  5. Review the transfer. Check the spelling of the name, destination, payout method, account or phone number, and currencies. Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees before you confirm. Read the displayed payment summary and any requests for supporting information.
  6. Confirm and track it. Submit the transfer only after the details are correct. Follow its status in your Coinepay dashboard or app, and share any recipient collection instructions privately with the intended recipient.

Do not submit a transfer with guessed details to see whether it goes through. If a field is unclear, ask the recipient or their bank or wallet provider, or contact Coinepay support before confirming.

What the recipient should expect

For a bank deposit, the recipient should watch the account they provided and respond if their bank asks about the incoming payment. For a wallet payout, they should check the wallet linked to the submitted number and provider. For cash pickup, they should wait for the applicable collection instructions and bring the identification requested by the agent.

Recipients may be asked about their identity, the relationship to the sender or the reason for the transfer. Kenya’s remittance rules require operators to collect transaction and identification information, including the payment’s purpose and source of funds. Whether a receipt has tax implications depends on what the money represents, not simply on the fact that it arrived from abroad. If the payment relates to business income, wages or another taxable activity, the recipient should seek advice appropriate to their circumstances.

Troubleshooting a Kenya transfer

  • Wrong recipient details: If you notice an incorrect name, account number, bank identifier, wallet provider or phone number, check the transfer status and contact Coinepay support promptly. Do not assume you can edit a transfer after confirmation. Incorrect details may delay the payout or lead the receiving institution to reject it.
  • Compliance review: If Coinepay requests identification or information about the payment’s purpose or source of funds, provide genuine documents through the requested channel. The sender and recipient may both need to answer questions before processing can continue.
  • No payout yet: Check the tracked status first. Funding, currency conversion, the receiving bank or wallet provider, and weekends or public holidays can all affect processing. For cash pickup, check whether the recipient has received the necessary collection instructions and can meet the agent’s requirements.
  • Rejected or returned transfer: Ask Coinepay support what the tracked status means and whether the recipient details or payout method caused the return. Verify any corrected information with the recipient before starting another transfer. Review the new transfer’s displayed rate and fees before confirming it.

If the status does not explain the issue, use Coinepay support and include the transfer reference and a concise description of the problem. Share sensitive account or identity documents only through the channel support directs you to use.

Coinepay supports mobile-wallet payouts, including M-Pesa. Select the available wallet option and enter the recipient’s registered name, provider and phone number as requested.

Where can I see the exchange rate and fees?

Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees in the transfer review before you confirm.
