To pay for IBM watsonx, first identify the service you need, then set up an IBM Cloud account and its payment method. watsonx.ai, watsonx.data and watsonx.governance have separate plans: there is no single subscription that automatically covers all three. This guide explains where a Coinepay virtual card fits into IBM’s sign-up and billing flow, and what to check if IBM does not accept the card.
Before you start
- Choose the service and plan. IBM lists Free Toolbox playground, Essentials (Pay-as-you-go) and Standard (Pay-as-you-go) for watsonx.ai. IBM also documents a Lite tier for watsonx.ai Runtime. For watsonx.data on IBM Cloud, the documented instance plans are Lite and Enterprise. watsonx.governance lists Trial, Model Management, Risk & Compliance - Basic and Risk & Compliance - Advanced. Check the relevant official IBM pricing page and your location-specific checkout for current charges and taxes.
- Prepare your IBM account details. You need an IBMid and an IBM Cloud account. Use your real name, account country and billing information. IBM may request a card during account creation for identity verification, even if you intend to begin with a free tier.
- Prepare your Coinepay card. Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. In the Coinepay app or 24/7 self-service dashboard, get your virtual card number, expiry date and CVV, and check its available funds.
Check IBM’s card requirements before relying on the card. For new-account verification, IBM explicitly accepts a non-disposable Visa or Mastercard debit card. Do not assume a Coinepay virtual card meets that requirement or that IBM will accept it for your account. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets IBM’s stated requirement before you buy. IBM also excludes American Express for certain accounts based in India, Singapore or South Africa that are billed in USD.
How to sign up and pay for IBM watsonx
- Pick the watsonx product you will use. Start from the relevant official IBM watsonx product or pricing page and compare its plans. A watsonx.ai plan is not a watsonx.data or watsonx.governance plan. Check which IBM Cloud region offers the service and features you need; availability varies by region.
- Create or sign in to your IBMid. Follow IBM’s prompts to create an IBM Cloud account or access an existing one. Enter your real account and billing details, including any tax information IBM requests. IBM may ask for a card as part of account verification.
- Enter the card details if IBM requests them. Copy the card number, expiry date and CVV from Coinepay. Enter your genuine cardholder and billing details, and review the country shown on your IBM account. IBM says an account-creation card check can create a temporary authorization hold that is reversed within 24–72 hours. Keep enough available funds for any authorization and expected charges; check the Coinepay app for your card’s applicable details.
- Select and provision the relevant service plan. In IBM Cloud, select the watsonx service and plan you want, then review the displayed billing terms before submitting. Lite use is not charged, but using a billable plan starts billable usage. For example, watsonx.data Enterprise on IBM Cloud requires a Pay-As-You-Go or Subscription account. Do not confuse its plans with the separately listed AWS-deployed watsonx.data offers.
- If you have an existing Lite account, add a card to upgrade. In IBM Cloud, go to Manage → Account → Account settings → Add credit card. Enter the payment details, select Next and submit. Once IBM processes the change, the account upgrades to Pay-As-You-Go; IBM invoices billable usage monthly.
- Confirm the result. Check the IBM Cloud account and service instance to verify that the intended plan is active. Monitor usage and invoices in IBM’s billing area, and check Coinepay for card activity. Provisioning a free service does not by itself mean every later watsonx action is free.
IBM’s listed prices are indicative, can vary by country and exclude applicable taxes. Before enabling a paid plan, use IBM’s current pricing page and location-specific catalog estimate rather than assuming a public starting price is your checkout total.
Where to manage the payment method and charges
For an IBM Cloud account billed in USD, IBM directs payment-method management to Manage → Billing and usage → Payments. For a non-USD-billed account, IBM directs you to IBM Billing. If the expected option is not there, check which account and billing arrangement you are using rather than adding the card to a different account.
Pay-As-You-Go accounts require an active card. Some Subscription or Enterprise Savings Plan arrangements use other payment methods arranged through IBM Sales; an eligible invoice may also have its own payment options. Do not treat those arrangements as the standard self-service card checkout. PayPal is not an IBM Cloud payment option.
Review ongoing charges as well as the first payment. For example, IBM states that the watsonx.ai Runtime Standard instance fee applies even when the instance is not used. If you no longer need a service, delete its instance and cancel any associated entries under Manage → Billing and usage → Billing items; IBM says charges continue until billing items are canceled. Accrued usage may still appear on a final invoice.
If IBM declines or cannot save your card
Read the exact message IBM displays before changing anything. IBM documents messages including “Transaction Rejected,” “General decline of the card,” “Inactive card or card not authorized for card-not-present transactions,” “Invalid account number,” “Transaction already processed” and “Your card could not be saved.” A message identifies where to start checking, but does not necessarily reveal the final reason for a decline.
- Insufficient available funds: Check the available amount in Coinepay against the charge or temporary authorization IBM is attempting. Metered usage and applicable taxes can affect what you ultimately owe. If funds are insufficient, add funds through the options shown in your Coinepay account before retrying.
- Name or billing-address mismatch: Compare your real IBM account name and address with your genuine cardholder and billing details. Correct errors through the appropriate account settings; do not invent an address to make a payment pass. IBM also advises checking that any required tax ID is valid and matches the account country.
- Card details or authorization: For “Invalid account number,” recheck the number you entered. For an inactive-card or card-not-present message, check the card’s status in Coinepay and ask Coinepay support whether the attempted online payment can be authorized. For a general decline or rejected transaction, provide support with the time, amount and displayed message, without sending your full card number or CVV.
- 3-D Secure or another authentication prompt: If IBM or the payment flow asks you to authenticate, complete the prompt using the method made available to you. If it times out or fails, return to IBM, confirm whether the card was saved or the transaction completed, and only then retry. For “Transaction already processed,” check the account and payment history before submitting again.
- Merchant region or account checks: Verify that your IBM account country, billing details and requested watsonx service are eligible. IBM limits personal-use IBM Cloud accounts in some countries, and watsonx features differ between regions. A decline is not a reason to select a false country or bypass verification. Ask IBM about account or service eligibility and Coinepay about card requirements if the cause remains unclear.
If the message is “Your card could not be saved,” check the account details and IBM’s stated card requirements before another attempt. Keep a record of the error for IBM support. A successful Coinepay card creation does not guarantee acceptance by IBM.
Changing plans or stopping payment
Before upgrading, check whether the chosen watsonx plan has metered charges, a recurring instance fee or other billing items. To stop future service charges, follow IBM’s cancellation steps for the specific service instance and inspect Manage → Billing and usage → Billing items for associated items that must be canceled. Closing a Pay-As-You-Go account is a separate step under Manage → Account → Account settings → Close account, after its services and billing items are canceled. IBM says closing a Subscription account requires a support case; early Subscription cancellation is at IBM’s discretion, and remaining subscription credit might be forfeited.

FAQ
Is there one subscription for all IBM watsonx products?
No. watsonx.ai, watsonx.data and watsonx.governance have separate plans. Choose and review the billing terms for each service you need.
Can I use a Coinepay virtual card to verify a new IBM Cloud account?
IBM states that new-account verification accepts a non-disposable Visa or Mastercard debit card. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets that requirement; IBM makes the acceptance decision.
Where do I add a card to an existing IBM Cloud Lite account?
Go to Manage → Account → Account settings → Add credit card, enter the details, select Next and submit. IBM upgrades the account to Pay-As-You-Go after processing.
Why does IBM say “Your card could not be saved”?
Check the card details, your real account and billing information, and IBM’s card requirements. If the error persists, give IBM support the message and ask Coinepay support about the attempted card payment.
Does deleting a watsonx instance stop every charge?
Not necessarily. IBM says to cancel associated billing items under Manage → Billing and usage → Billing items; accrued usage can still appear on a final invoice.
