You can use Coinepay Global Remittance to send money from abroad to India and select a UPI payout when it is available for your transfer. UPI is India’s payment system, and the recipient receives funds in Indian rupees. Before you confirm, check that the UPI identifier belongs to the right person—and, if you intend to fund a mobile wallet, that it points to an eligible wallet rather than a linked bank account.

Check that the recipient’s wallet can receive the transfer

A UPI payment can go to an account identified through a UPI app, but a UPI ID does not, by itself, tell you whether the destination is a wallet or a bank account. Ask the recipient to confirm their intended receiving account in their app before you send money.

An eligible mobile wallet is a prepaid payment instrument, or PPI, not a mobile-airtime balance. For a wallet to participate in interoperable UPI payments, it must be UPI-enabled and the recipient must have completed the wallet issuer’s full identity verification, often called full KYC. A minimum-detail wallet cannot be used for interoperable funds transfers. Support for a particular wallet and UPI identifier also depends on the participating provider.

If the recipient is unsure of their wallet’s status, ask them to check its verification section or contact its issuer. They should also check whether the wallet can accept the intended payment without exceeding an applicable balance or transaction limit. These restrictions can vary by wallet issuer and receiving route.

Get the right UPI recipient details

Ask the recipient for their full name exactly as registered with the receiving account and a supported identifier for that account. This may be their UPI ID, also called a Virtual Payment Address or VPA, or a registered mobile number if the payout route can resolve that number to the intended recipient. A UPI ID looks like name@provider; ask the recipient to copy theirs directly from their app rather than reconstructing it from memory.

A phone number alone does not establish which account will receive the money. If the recipient uses more than one UPI app or has both a wallet and a bank account, confirm which account their identifier resolves to. Where Coinepay displays a recipient name or other confirmation before you send, compare it with the details the recipient gave you. If anything differs, stop and ask the recipient to verify the identifier.

Use the recipient’s real, registered details. Do not change a name or substitute another person’s number to get past a validation message.

Send money to UPI from abroad

  1. Prepare your Coinepay account. Sign in through the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app. If you are new, register and complete any identity verification requested for the transfer.
  2. Start a Global Remittance transfer. Choose India as the destination. Review the available payout methods and select UPI if it is offered for this transfer.
  3. Enter the recipient details. Provide the requested UPI ID or registered mobile number and the recipient’s full registered name. Follow the fields shown in Coinepay; do not assume that a phone-number field will direct funds to a particular wallet.
  4. Enter the amount and review the payout. Check the recipient identifier, name, destination and receiving method. The exchange rate and fees are shown before you confirm. Review the displayed amount the recipient is expected to receive in Indian rupees as well.
  5. Confirm only when everything matches. Complete any on-screen authorisation or document request. Coinepay may request information about the purpose of the payment or source of funds as part of its checks.
  6. Track the transfer. Use the status tracking in the Coinepay dashboard or app. Keep the transfer reference available in case you need help from Coinepay support.

Do not treat a transfer as delivered just because you submitted it. Wait for its status to update, then ask the recipient to check the intended account.

How the recipient sees the money arrive

The recipient should open the app for the wallet or account associated with the identifier you used. They can check its transaction history, notifications and available balance for an incoming payment in Indian rupees. The wording and display depend on their provider.

If they expected a wallet credit but cannot find one, ask them to check which account their UPI ID or mobile number identifies. It may be associated with a bank account instead of the wallet they had in mind. They should also confirm that their wallet is full-KYC and UPI-enabled. Do not send a second transfer solely because a notification has not appeared; first check the Coinepay transfer status and the recipient’s account history.

Troubleshoot a UPI payout

Wrong number or UPI ID

If you have not confirmed the transfer, correct the identifier and verify the recipient again. If you already confirmed it, check the Coinepay status and contact support promptly with the transfer reference. Do not assume a completed payment can be cancelled or automatically reversed. A payment sent to the wrong recipient is different from a failed payment that has not reached its intended recipient.

Name mismatch

Pause if the displayed recipient differs from the full name supplied to you. Ask the recipient to check their registered name and UPI ID in their app, including spelling and any account-specific details. Do not proceed based only on a familiar phone number.

Wallet limit reached

A wallet issuer may restrict how much the wallet can hold or receive, and applicable transfer limits may also affect the payout. Ask the recipient to check their wallet’s current balance, verification status and issuer rules. If a transfer is declined or remains unresolved, check its status before trying again; Coinepay support can help you review the remittance side of the transaction.

Unverified wallet or unsupported route

A wallet that has not completed full KYC cannot receive interoperable UPI funds transfers. The recipient can ask their wallet issuer what verification is needed and whether that wallet supports the intended UPI receiving route. If it does not, review the other payout methods Coinepay offers for the destination, such as an eligible bank deposit. Confirm any alternative account with the recipient before starting a new transfer.

Compliance review or recipient not credited

Transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay may ask for documents showing the purpose of the transfer or source of funds. Respond through the requested channel with accurate information; do not ask someone else to receive the payment or make separate transfers to avoid a review.

If Coinepay shows a completed transfer but the recipient cannot find the funds, compare the submitted identifier with their receiving-account details. Ask the recipient to contact their wallet issuer if the account history still shows no credit, and contact Coinepay support with the transfer reference and relevant status. If the status is pending or failed, follow the instructions shown in Coinepay rather than assuming the recipient has been paid.

Before you confirm

UPI is used in India, and an eligible receiving wallet is denominated in Indian rupees. The safest final check is to have the recipient confirm their full registered name, the exact UPI identifier and whether it leads to the wallet they intend to use. Then review the exchange rate, fees and recipient details displayed in Coinepay before authorising the transfer. Availability is subject to the payout route, verification requirements and applicable regulations.

FAQ

Can I send to a UPI wallet using only a phone number?

Only if the available payout route can resolve that number to the intended recipient. Confirm which account it identifies; a phone number does not guarantee a wallet credit.

Does any UPI ID lead to a mobile wallet?

No. A UPI ID may identify a bank account rather than a wallet. Ask the recipient to confirm the account linked to the ID before sending.

Does the recipient need a verified wallet?

Yes, an interoperable UPI wallet must be full-KYC and UPI-enabled. The recipient can check eligibility with their wallet issuer.

What should I do if the name shown does not match?

Do not confirm the transfer. Ask the recipient to verify their exact registered name and UPI identifier in their app.

What if Coinepay says the transfer is complete but the recipient sees no money?

Check the identifier and intended receiving account, ask the recipient to review their account history and contact their issuer, then contact Coinepay support with the transfer reference.
