MTN Mobile Money (branded MoMo) lets people across several African markets hold money in a mobile wallet linked to their phone number, pay merchants and withdraw cash at an agent. If you are abroad and want to top up a friend's or family member's MoMo wallet, Coinepay Global Remittance lets you select the MTN Mobile Money payout method, see the rate and fees before you confirm, and track the transfer from your phone. This guide explains what you need and how the money arrives.
Before you start: what MTN Mobile Money is
A MoMo transfer credits the recipient's Mobile Money wallet balance — not their airtime and not a bank account. Once the money lands, the recipient can spend it directly, send it on, or cash out at an MTN MoMo agent (a destination-country withdrawal fee usually applies when they cash out, which is set locally by MTN, not by Coinepay).
MoMo operates in multiple countries, and the payout rules differ by market. Wallet remittance destinations commonly include Ghana, Uganda, Rwanda and Zambia, while availability in other markets varies and some countries only support inbound credit. When you build the transfer in Coinepay, the app shows you which MTN Mobile Money destinations it can currently pay out to — always confirm the specific country before you send, because MTN operating in a country does not guarantee that wallet-transfer payout is open there.
Details you need from the recipient
To pay out to MTN Mobile Money, collect these from the recipient first:
- The phone number registered to their MoMo account, including the country code. This is the number the wallet is tied to; money sent to a number that is not linked to an active MoMo account will not be delivered.
- The recipient's full name exactly as registered on their MoMo wallet. Many corridors require the payout name to match, so use their legal name as MTN has it — not a nickname.
- The destination country, so the correct MoMo market and currency are applied.
Ask the recipient to confirm their number is active and able to receive Mobile Money, and that their wallet is verified to the level needed to receive your amount (more on that below).
Set up Coinepay first
If you are new to Coinepay, create an account and complete identity verification (KYC) before sending — remittance is only available to verified users. You can manage everything from the 24/7 dashboard or the mobile app on iOS and Google Play. Use your real identity and real details; every transfer is subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay sends to every country and region except those under comprehensive sanctions, and may ask for supporting information such as the purpose or source of funds.
Step by step: send to MTN Mobile Money
- Open Global Remittance in the Coinepay app or dashboard and start a new transfer.
- Choose the destination country where the recipient's MoMo wallet is held.
- Select the payout method and choose mobile wallet → MTN Mobile Money (MoMo).
- Enter the recipient's details: their registered MoMo phone number with country code and their full name exactly as registered. Double-check every digit of the number before continuing.
- Enter the amount you want to send or the amount you want the recipient to receive, depending on which the app asks for.
- Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay shows the rate and all fees clearly on the confirmation screen before you commit, so you can see what leaves your account and roughly what reaches the wallet. Review the recipient name, number and country one more time here.
- Confirm the transfer. If a compliance check requests more information, provide it promptly so the payout is not delayed.
Track the transfer and how the recipient sees it
Every Coinepay transfer has status tracking. Open the transfer in your dashboard or app to follow it from processing through to delivery. The recipient typically receives an SMS from MTN confirming their MoMo wallet has been credited, and the new balance appears in their MoMo menu or app. From there they can pay merchants, send money on, or visit a MoMo agent to withdraw cash.
Keep the transfer reference from Coinepay. If the recipient says the money has not arrived, that reference is the fastest way for support to locate the payment.
Recipient wallet limits and verification levels
MoMo wallets have tiered KYC levels, and the tier affects how much a wallet can hold and transact in a given period. In Ghana, for example, the regulator sets daily transaction limits that rise across minimum-KYC, medium-KYC and enhanced-KYC tiers, and an account's capacity also depends on its available balance and applicable wallet limits. A recipient in Ghana can check their own ceilings by dialling *170# and choosing My Wallet → Check Wallet Limits. Other countries run their own tier systems and menus. If you plan to send a larger amount, ask the recipient to confirm their wallet is verified to a level that can receive it before you send.
Troubleshooting
Wrong number entered
If you mistyped the number and the transfer has not yet been delivered, contact Coinepay support immediately with your reference. Once a mobile-wallet credit is delivered to an account, it generally cannot be clawed back, so act quickly and always verify the number on the review screen.
"Number cannot receive Mobile Money" or payee not found
This means the number is not linked to an active MoMo account or was entered incorrectly. Confirm with the recipient that the number is the one registered to their wallet, that the wallet is active, and that the country code is correct, then try again.
Name mismatch
If the payout name does not match the name on the MoMo wallet, the transfer can be held or rejected. Ask the recipient for the exact name as registered with MTN and correct it before resending.
Wallet limit reached or unverified wallet
If the wallet has hit its tier limit or is not verified to a high enough level, it may not be able to receive your amount. The recipient can check or raise their limits by completing additional MoMo KYC with MTN (in Ghana, via *170# → My Wallet). Once their wallet is ready, you can send again.
Compliance review
Transfers can be paused for sanctions screening or further checks. Respond to any Coinepay request for documents, such as the purpose or source of funds, as soon as you can. Never split a transfer, route it through another person, or alter details to avoid checks — doing so can cause the payment to be rejected.
Money not showing up
If the status shows delivered but the recipient cannot see the balance, ask them to refresh their MoMo app or check for the SMS confirmation, then contact Coinepay support with your transfer reference so the payment can be traced.
A few reminders
Rates, fees, limits and delivery times depend on the corridor and are shown in the Coinepay app before you confirm — always review that screen. Services related to virtual assets are not available to residents of mainland China, and some services are not available in every jurisdiction. FAQ
What information do I need to send money to an MTN Mobile Money wallet?
You need the destination country, the phone number registered to the recipient's MoMo account (with country code), and the recipient's full name exactly as registered on their MoMo wallet. Confirm the number is active and able to receive Mobile Money before you send.
Does the money go to airtime or a bank account?
Neither. A MoMo transfer credits the recipient's Mobile Money wallet balance. From there they can pay merchants, send it on, or withdraw cash at an MTN MoMo agent, where a local withdrawal fee may apply.
Can I cancel or reverse a transfer if I used the wrong number?
Once a mobile-wallet credit is delivered it generally cannot be reversed. If the transfer has not yet been delivered, contact Coinepay support immediately with your transfer reference. Always double-check the number on the review screen before confirming.
Why was my transfer held for review?
Every transfer is subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay may ask for documents such as the purpose or source of funds. Provide any requested information promptly and do not split the transfer or route it through others.
How will the recipient know the money arrived?
MTN usually sends the recipient an SMS confirming their MoMo wallet was credited, and the new balance appears in their MoMo menu or app. You can also follow the status of the transfer in your Coinepay dashboard or app.
