Coinepay Global Remittance lets you send money to India from the United States and have it paid out to your recipient in Indian rupees. Whether you are supporting family, paying a freelancer or settling with a supplier, you can set up the transfer from the Coinepay app or the 24/7 self-service dashboard, see the exchange rate and fees before you confirm, and track the transfer until it arrives. This guide walks through what you need and how each payout method works.

Before you start: what the sender needs

To send from the United States you need a Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. Transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations, and Coinepay may ask for supporting documents such as the purpose of the payment or the source of funds, so keep those ready to avoid holds.

You will also need accurate details for your recipient. The exact fields depend on the payout method you choose, but in every case you need the recipient's full legal name exactly as it appears on their bank or wallet records. A name mismatch is one of the most common reasons a payment is delayed or returned.

  • A verified Coinepay account and the funds to send.
  • The recipient's full legal name.
  • The payout details for the method you pick (see below).
  • The purpose of the transfer — India uses purpose codes, and an incorrect one can delay or cause rejection of a transfer.

India's currency and payout methods

India's local currency is the Indian rupee (INR). When you choose India as the destination, Coinepay shows the payout options available for your corridor. The details your recipient needs differ by method, so confirm with them which they prefer before you create the transfer.

Bank account deposit

A deposit straight into the recipient's Indian bank account is the most widely used option. In India, inward credits typically reach the beneficiary's account through domestic networks such as NEFT and IMPS. For an INR bank deposit you normally provide:

  • The account holder's full name as registered with the bank.
  • The bank account number.
  • The IFSC — an 11-character bank-and-branch code. The first four characters are letters for the bank, the fifth is always a 0, and the last six identify the branch.

India has no national IBAN format, so do not look for an IBAN — the account number plus IFSC are the identifiers you need. If a transfer is routed as a direct international bank wire, the receiving bank may also require SWIFT/BIC instructions; because an Indian branch may not have its own SWIFT code, ask the recipient's bank to confirm the correct receiving code.

Mobile wallet and UPI

Some United States–to–India services can pay to a recipient's UPI ID instead of collecting full bank-account details, which the recipient obtains from their UPI app. India's regulations allow qualifying full-KYC prepaid or wallet-style products to receive inward remittances within set caps. Availability of any specific wallet from the United States can vary, so open the Coinepay app to see whether UPI or a wallet payout is offered for your transfer and what the recipient needs to provide.

Cash pickup

Cash pickup is offered on some United States–to–India routes, though it is not available under every remittance channel. If it appears as an option, the recipient collects the funds at a payout location using a valid government photo ID and the reference details from the transfer. Note that cash payouts into India are capped under the personal-remittance channel used, and larger amounts must be paid into a bank account instead — Coinepay will show you what is available for your amount.

Step by step: sending the transfer

  1. Sign in and start a transfer. Open the Coinepay app or dashboard and choose to send a global remittance. If you are new, register and complete verification first.
  2. Choose the destination and currency. Select India as the destination; the payout currency is Indian rupees (INR).
  3. Pick the payout method. Select bank deposit, UPI/mobile wallet or cash pickup from the options shown for your corridor.
  4. Enter the recipient details. Add the full legal name and the fields for your chosen method — account number and IFSC for a bank deposit, the UPI ID for a wallet payout, or the details the app requests for cash pickup. Double-check every character.
  5. State the purpose. Select or enter the purpose of the payment if prompted, as India relies on purpose codes.
  6. Review the rate and fees. Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees clearly before you confirm. Check the amount your recipient will receive in INR.
  7. Confirm and pay. Fund and confirm the transfer. You may be asked for documents to satisfy identity or source-of-funds checks.
  8. Track the status. Every transfer has status tracking in the app, so you can follow it from processing through to payout.

Recipient-side considerations in India

How a transfer is handled in India can depend on its purpose. For bank-account payouts, the credit lands via domestic networks, while cash payouts have their own ceilings. Your recipient may request a Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate (FIRC) as evidence of the transfer; whether one is needed depends on the recipient's purpose.

Keep in mind some India-specific rules that may apply to the person receiving the money, without treating this as tax advice:

  • Ordinary family or personal transfers should not be treated as donations to an organisation. Foreign contributions to associations covered by the FCRA require registration or prior permission and must be received through a designated FCRA account.
  • For Indian tax purposes, otherwise non-exempt monetary gifts from abroad can be taxable when the year's aggregate exceeds a set threshold, with an exception for gifts from specified relatives. The recipient should check their own position.

If you are a business paying an overseas supplier or settling with a trading partner, Coinepay keeps compliant transaction records you can use for your books.

Troubleshooting delays and returns

Wrong recipient details

Incorrect account details can cause the receiving bank to reject and return the payment. If you spot a mistake before payout, check whether the transfer can still be edited or cancelled in the app, and contact support promptly.

Compliance or identity review

Identity checks, missing recipient information, a payout provider's compliance review or a temporarily unavailable payout provider can put a transfer on hold. Respond quickly to any request for documents — for example the purpose or source of funds — to help it move forward. An incorrect purpose code can also cause a hold or rejection.

Longer-than-expected delivery

Funding time, currency conversion, bank processing schedules, weekends and public holidays can all extend delivery without meaning the payment has been returned. Check the live status in the app before assuming anything has gone wrong.

Returned transfers

If a payment is returned — usually because of a detail mismatch or a closed account — it is reflected in the transfer status. Confirm the correct details with your recipient and set up a fresh transfer, or contact Coinepay support for help.

Coinepay does not serve sanctioned persons or residents of jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions, and all customers and counterparties are screened against sanctions lists. Never try to split transfers or route them through third parties to avoid checks.

FAQ

What details do I need to send money to a bank account in India?

You need the recipient's full legal name as registered with their bank, their bank account number, and the 11-character IFSC code identifying the bank and branch. India has no IBAN, so the account number plus IFSC are the key identifiers.

Can I send money to a UPI ID or mobile wallet in India?

Some United States–to–India routes can pay to a recipient's UPI ID instead of full bank details, and India's rules allow qualifying full-KYC wallet products to receive inward remittances. Open the Coinepay app to see whether UPI or a wallet payout is offered for your transfer.

How much will the transfer cost and how long will it take?

Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees clearly before you confirm, and you can track the status in the app. Delivery time can vary with funding, bank schedules, weekends and holidays, so check the live status rather than relying on an estimate.

Why might my transfer to India be delayed or returned?

Common causes are incorrect recipient account details, an identity or compliance review, missing information, an incorrect purpose code, or a temporarily unavailable payout provider. Respond quickly to any document requests and double-check details before sending.

Do I need to provide the purpose of the payment?

Yes, India relies on purpose codes, so you may be asked to state the purpose of the transfer. An incorrect purpose can delay or cause rejection. Coinepay may also request documents such as source of funds as part of compliance checks.
