You can subscribe to USA TODAY through its news app or, where offered, its website. Which payment account you use depends on where you complete checkout: an in-app purchase is billed through Apple or Google Play, while a website purchase follows the options shown by USA TODAY. This guide explains how to prepare a Coinepay virtual card, check the offer before paying, and handle common payment problems.

Before you subscribe

Register for Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. You can start at Coinepay registration and manage your card in the Coinepay app or 24/7 self-service dashboard. Once your virtual card is issued, its number, expiry date and CVV are available instantly. Check your available funds and the card details in your account before attempting a purchase.

Have your real name and billing details ready. Use the billing address associated with your payment method; do not enter a different country or invented address to reach an offer. Availability, taxes, renewal terms and payment options can differ by location and checkout channel. A Coinepay card can be used for online subscriptions, but acceptance of any particular card at USA TODAY, Apple or Google Play is determined at checkout.

Make sure you are buying a USA TODAY news subscription, not an item from the USA TODAY Store. The Store does not sell subscriptions. The USA TODAY news app is free to download and includes some free articles, so you can inspect its subscription offers before deciding to pay.

Choose the right USA TODAY offer

The USA TODAY iOS listing includes USA TODAY Premium, USA TODAY Premium Plus Ad-Free and USA TODAY Puzzles offerings, among other listed in-app purchases. A listing is not a promise that every option will appear for every new subscriber. Check the description on the offer presented to you: a puzzles purchase, an ad-free option and a general news subscription may serve different needs.

At the time of writing (October 2026), the U.S. iOS listing showed USA TODAY Premium at $14.99 monthly or $89 annually, Premium Plus Ad-Free at $22.99 monthly or $169 annually, and USA TODAY Puzzles at $4.99 monthly or $39.99 yearly. These are U.S. iOS listing prices, not verified prices for website or Google Play checkout. Offers and regional prices may change; check USA TODAY’s official subscription page or the final in-app purchase screen for the price you will actually pay and the renewal amount.

How to subscribe in the USA TODAY app

  1. Download the official USA TODAY news app from your device’s app store and open it. Find a subscription offer in the app, then review the access included with the displayed plan.
  2. If prompted, create or sign in to your USA TODAY account using your real details. Keep track of the account you use so you can access your subscription later.
  3. Before purchasing, review the price, billing period and renewal terms on the platform’s confirmation screen. In-app subscriptions are charged to your Apple or Google Play account when you confirm the purchase; they renew monthly or yearly unless you turn off renewal.
  4. To try paying with your Coinepay card, add its card number, expiry and CVV to the payment account used by your device, if that account offers a suitable card-payment option. On iPhone, go to Settings → your name → Payment & Shipping to add or update a payment method. For Google Play, use its payment-method settings and follow the prompts shown for your account.
  5. Return to the USA TODAY offer, check which payment method the platform will charge, and confirm only if the details are correct. Save the purchase confirmation.

Adding a card to a platform account does not establish that the platform will accept it or use it for this purchase. If you have other payment methods or an account balance, inspect the final confirmation carefully. If the card cannot be added or the payment is declined, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than repeatedly submitting unchanged details.

How to approach a website subscription

If you prefer to subscribe on the USA TODAY website, open its official subscription page and select the news offer available to you. Sign in or create an account if requested, then read the checkout summary, including introductory terms, renewal price and billing frequency. Website offers may differ from in-app offers, so do not assume the iOS prices above apply.

If the website checkout presents a card-payment field, enter your Coinepay virtual card details and your genuine billing information, then review the final amount before submitting. The exact current website checkout fields and accepted payment choices are not established here; follow the options actually displayed. If card payment is unavailable, do not try to bypass the checkout’s location or payment requirements. Ask Coinepay support about your card if you need help checking whether it meets a stated requirement.

What to check when a card is declined

A failed payment does not by itself identify the cause. USA TODAY does not have a confirmed, published list of checkout decline messages for this guide. Start with the channel that billed you—USA TODAY’s website, Apple or Google Play—and work through these checks:

  • Insufficient available funds: Check the card’s available balance in Coinepay. Allow for the amount shown at checkout, any applicable tax and a renewal or outstanding charge if you are updating an existing subscription. Review any funding options shown in your Coinepay account before retrying.
  • Billing details mismatch: Recheck the card number, expiry, CVV, name and real billing address. For an app purchase, review the billing information on the Apple or Google Play account as well. Correct a typo instead of changing your address to another region.
  • Authentication or 3-D Secure: If checkout displays an authentication challenge, complete it using the instructions provided. If the challenge does not appear, times out or fails, check for prompts in the relevant payment flow and contact Coinepay support for help investigating. Do not assume every declined payment was caused by 3-D Secure.
  • Merchant or platform region checks: An offer or payment method may be restricted by location or account settings. Confirm that your account country and billing information accurately reflect your circumstances. If checkout states a card-type or country-of-issuance requirement, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets it before you buy; do not assume it does.

For Apple-billed purchases, also check whether Apple shows an unpaid order or requests approval from your financial institution for a purchase. Apple notes that the financial institution can explain why a payment was declined. If a charge appears but subscriber articles remain locked, treat that as an access issue rather than automatically retrying payment: check whether your app-store purchase needs to be linked to your USA TODAY account for website access, and contact USA TODAY for account assistance.

Manage renewal and avoid paying twice

Manage an Apple-billed subscription at Settings → your name → Subscriptions. For a Google Play purchase, open Subscriptions → Manage in Google Play to manage the subscription or its primary payment method. Uninstalling the USA TODAY app does not cancel a Google Play subscription. The USA TODAY app listing advises turning off renewal in the relevant account settings at least 24 hours before the current period ends.

If you subscribed directly on the USA TODAY website, use the account and billing instructions provided with that purchase or contact USA TODAY. Do not assume an Apple or Google Play cancellation will affect a separate website subscription. Likewise, before trying a second checkout after an error, check your platform purchase history and USA TODAY account for an existing subscription or pending charge. Cancellation alone does not guarantee a refund; refund eligibility for an in-app purchase follows the applicable platform process and policy.

If the Coinepay card continues to fail after you have checked the details, contact Coinepay support with the checkout channel, date, amount and any exact error text. Do not share your full card number or CVV in an ordinary support message.

FAQ

Can I pay for USA TODAY with a Coinepay virtual card?

You can try the card wherever your chosen USA TODAY checkout or app-store account offers card payment. Acceptance is determined during that checkout.

Will adding my card to my iPhone change how my subscription is billed?

An iPhone in-app purchase is billed through your Apple account. Check the payment method shown before confirming; manage or cancel the subscription under Settings → your name → Subscriptions.

Why are USA TODAY articles still locked after I paid?

First confirm the purchase succeeded. For website access, an app-store purchase may need to be linked to your USA TODAY account; contact USA TODAY if access remains locked.

Does deleting the USA TODAY app cancel my subscription?

No. Manage an Apple purchase in iPhone subscription settings or a Google Play purchase under Subscriptions → Manage. Check the instructions for your billing channel.
