Sage Accounting is a cloud bookkeeping and invoicing tool for small businesses and sole traders. If you run your finances through Sage and want to keep your subscription spending separate from your main account, a Coinepay virtual card gives you a dedicated card number, expiry date and CVV you can use at the Sage checkout. This guide walks through what you need, how to subscribe step by step, and what to do if a payment is declined.
Before you start: what you need
Sage sells and prices Sage Accounting differently by country, so first open the Sage website for your region and confirm which edition and plan you are buying. The tier names differ:
- UK: Sage Accounting Start, Standard and Plus.
- Canada: Accounting Start, Accounting Standard and Accounting Plus.
- Ireland: Accounting Start and Accounting.
- South Africa: Sage Accounting Start and Standard.
Availability varies: Sage's US accounting pages present Sage 50 and Sage Intacct rather than a self-service Sage Accounting edition, and current Australian Sage Accounting sign-up availability is not clear. Check whether the product is offered where you are before you plan to pay. Prices also vary by region and change with promotions, so always read the figure on Sage's own pricing page at checkout rather than relying on any third-party number.
On the Coinepay side you need:
- A registered Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. If you have not signed up yet, you can register with Coinepay and finish verification first.
- An active virtual card created in the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app, with its card number, expiry and CVV to hand.
- Enough balance on the card to cover the first charge plus any applicable VAT or local tax Sage adds at checkout.
- Your real billing name and address, matching the details on your Coinepay account.
Sage states it accepts credit or debit card for UK subscription payments (direct debit is also offered but needs a UK GBP bank account). Sage does not publish a confirmed, market-wide list of accepted card brands for Sage Accounting checkout, and whether any given card is accepted is decided at checkout. If you want to confirm your card meets a requirement before you buy, contact Coinepay support.
Step 1: Create your Coinepay virtual card
Sign in to the Coinepay app (iOS or Google Play) or the web dashboard, open the cards section and issue a new virtual card. The card number, expiry date and CVV are shown instantly. Top it up so the balance comfortably covers the plan price shown on Sage's checkout, including tax, with a little headroom for any small authorisation Sage may place.
Step 2: Choose your plan on Sage
On your regional Sage Accounting page, pick the tier you want. Sage often runs introductory offers — for example, at the time of writing (October 2026) the UK page advertised 90% off for six months or, alternatively, one month free; Canada advertised 75% off for six months for eligible new customers; and Ireland advertised 90% off for three months. These promotions change, so treat the price on screen as the one that governs. Sage's product pages typically offer separate free trial and Buy now routes — the Canadian 30-day trial, for instance, does not require a credit card. If you take the trial, you will still enter card details when you convert to a paid plan.
Step 3: Create your account
Sage sign-up asks for your name, email address and a password, then sends an email activation link you must click to continue. Use your real business identity — this becomes the owner account that controls billing.
Step 4: Go through checkout
Follow the purchase flow for your plan. In Canada, Sage offers an optional Sage Payroll add-on before you reach Go to checkout or Check out without adding Payroll — choose whichever you need. At the payment step, enter your Coinepay virtual card number, expiry date and CVV, and type the billing name and address exactly as they appear on your Coinepay account. Review the total, including VAT or local tax, before you confirm.
Note that Sage's terms for recurring billing (documented for Canada) say subsequent monthly charges go to the same card on the purchase-anniversary date. Keep that card funded ahead of each renewal, or update the details in advance if you plan to switch cards.
Step 5: Confirm and save your records
After the charge succeeds, Sage opens your subscription. Save the confirmation email and invoice. Only the account owner can amend payment details or view subscription invoices — Sage states additional users cannot.
Managing or updating your payment card
To change the card on a Sage-billed UK subscription, the owner signs in and goes to business name → Manage business → Payment details → Manage payment details → Edit payment details. In Canada, if an account is locked over a payment issue, the owner can select Update your payment details. If you bought through the mobile app, billing is handled by Apple or Google, and you manage payment details through that store instead.
Troubleshooting: card declined at the Sage checkout
Sage's documented decline messages — such as duplicate transaction, expired card, incorrect card number, insufficient funds, and a generic "The card has been declined for an unknown reason" — relate to customers paying invoices through Sage's Stripe integration, not to subscribers paying Sage. The exact wording you see at subscription checkout may differ, but the usual causes are the same. Work through these:
- Insufficient balance: Make sure your Coinepay card holds enough to cover the plan price plus tax and any small verification hold. Top up in the Coinepay app and retry.
- Billing address mismatch: The name and address you type on Sage must match what Coinepay has on file. A mismatch is a common reason for a refusal — correct it and try again.
- Card number, expiry or CVV typos: Re-enter the digits carefully, with no spaces, directly from the card details in your Coinepay app.
- 3-D Secure / extra verification: If a confirmation step appears, approve it in your Coinepay app or follow the authentication prompt so the payment can complete.
- Merchant region or currency checks: Sage support has advised some users whose international payments failed to check that the charge was in the business's base currency. Make sure you are buying on the correct regional Sage site for your plan, so the billing currency and tax match your account.
- Generic "unknown reason" decline: Wait a short while and retry once. If it keeps failing, check your Coinepay app for any card status or limit message, then contact Coinepay support to confirm the authorisation reached your card. You can also reach the team on Telegram.
If your card is accepted but you later need to stop billing, UK cancellation runs through business name → Manage business → View subscriptions → Manage subscriptions → Cancel Subscription, then Review and pay; Sage advises cancelling at least five working days before the next billing date, and access continues until that date. App-store purchases must be cancelled in Apple or Google at least 24 hours before renewal. Check Sage's current refund terms for your region before assuming a charge can be reversed — South Africa, for example, advertises a 30-day full-refund option, while other regions differ.
A note on keeping details accurate
Use your genuine identity and billing information with both Sage and Coinepay. Entering false details, or trying to work around a product's regional restrictions, can get a payment refused or an account closed. If you are unsure whether your Coinepay card will work for a particular Sage region, ask Coinepay support before you subscribe.

FAQ
Which Sage Accounting plan will my Coinepay card pay for?
Any tier Sage sells in your region — for example Start, Standard or Plus in the UK, or Accounting Start and Accounting in Ireland. Choose the plan on your regional Sage site and enter your Coinepay card at checkout. Prices and offers vary by country, so rely on the figure Sage shows at the time.
Does Sage accept virtual cards for subscription payments?
Sage says it accepts credit or debit card for subscription payments (UK also offers direct debit). It does not publish a confirmed, market-wide card-brand list for Sage Accounting checkout, and acceptance is decided at checkout. Contact Coinepay support if you want to confirm your card meets a requirement before buying.
My Coinepay card was declined at the Sage checkout. What should I check?
Confirm the card has enough balance for the price plus tax, that your billing name and address match your Coinepay account, and that the card number, expiry and CVV are correct. Approve any 3-D Secure prompt, make sure you are on the correct regional Sage site, then contact Coinepay support if it keeps failing.
Will my subscription renew on the same Coinepay card automatically?
Yes. Sage's recurring-billing terms charge the same card on the purchase-anniversary date, so keep that Coinepay card funded ahead of each renewal. The account owner can update the card in advance via Manage business → Payment details.
Can I get a refund if I pay for Sage with my card and change my mind?
It depends on your region. South Africa advertises a 30-day full-refund option, while other regions' terms differ and some fees are non-refundable. Check Sage's current refund terms for your country before paying, and cancel within the notice period Sage specifies.
