The OpenAI API lets you build apps on models like GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, and it bills separately from any ChatGPT subscription you may already have. Paying an API bill means adding a payment method to your API organization and buying prepaid credits. This guide walks through what you need, how to add a Coinepay virtual card at checkout, and how to read the most common decline messages when a purchase does not go through.

Before you start: what you need

OpenAI API billing is prepaid for new accounts, and the platform is region-restricted. Make sure you have the following ready:

  • An OpenAI account with access to the API Platform (this is separate from your ChatGPT plan funds, which do not pay an API bill).
  • A completed Coinepay registration with identity verification. If you have not signed up yet, you can create a Coinepay account and finish KYC first, then generate a virtual card in the Coinepay app or dashboard.
  • Your virtual card number, expiry date and CVV, which Coinepay issues instantly.
  • The real billing address tied to your card, matching your verified identity.

Two OpenAI requirements to check first. OpenAI states that API-credit purchases accept standard credit and debit cards and that prepaid cards are not supported. OpenAI also requires the card to be issued by a bank in one of its supported countries or territories, and access from an unsupported region can lead to blocking or suspension. Because these are OpenAI rules, do not assume any particular card will satisfy them. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets OpenAI's requirements before you attempt a purchase, and review OpenAI's official supported-countries list for your location.

Understand OpenAI API billing and tiers

OpenAI API pricing is usage-based, charged per million tokens, and published in USD. API credit purchases are limited to USD, so OpenAI does not provide a separate local-currency price list for API usage.

At the time of writing (October 2026), standard short-context rates were USD $10 input / $50 output per million tokens for GPT-6 Astra, $2 / $10 for GPT-6.1 Sol, and $0.10 / $0.50 for GPT-6 Luna, with separate rates for cached input and cache writes. Prices change often, so always confirm current numbers on OpenAI's official pricing page before you rely on them.

Paid usage tiers are organized as Build, Launch and Grow (OpenAI simplified the tier names on October 6, 2026). These are usage-limit tiers tied to how much credit you have purchased in total: Build unlocks after $5 in purchases with a $500 monthly usage limit, Launch after $100 with a $5,000 limit, and Grow after $500 with a $200,000 limit. Larger capacity offerings such as Scale Tier and Reserved Tier are Enterprise arrangements made through OpenAI sales.

Step by step: add your card and buy credits

  1. Sign in to the API Platform and open your organization's dashboard. If you are just starting, you can also create an API key here, but a key alone does not enable paid usage.
  2. Open the Billing overview. Organization owners find billing settings in the API Billing overview.
  3. Select "Add payment details." New API accounts use prepaid billing, so you will be prompted to add a card and then buy credits.
  4. Enter your Coinepay virtual card. Type the card number, expiry and CVV exactly as shown in the Coinepay app, and enter the billing address that matches your verified Coinepay identity. An accurate address helps pass the address check at checkout.
  5. Choose a credit amount. The initial purchase minimum is $5 and the default is $10. Pick the amount you want to start with.
  6. Review "Use auto-reload." Auto-reload is on by default during setup. Decide whether you want it; you can turn it off before you confirm if you prefer to top up manually.
  7. Confirm the purchase. Complete any 3-D Secure authentication your bank prompts for. Once the charge clears, your credits appear and your tier is set by your total purchases.

After setup you can see saved cards under Billing > Payment methods and review charges in Billing history. If a model request later returns credit_balance_exhausted, your prepaid credits have run out and you need to buy more.

Troubleshooting a declined card

OpenAI notes that banks often do not share a detailed decline reason, so you may need to work through possibilities. Common documented checkout messages include "authentication required," "card may be invalid or authentication may be needed," and "3D Secure attempt failed."

Insufficient balance

A credit purchase needs enough available funds on the card to cover the amount. Check your balance in the Coinepay app and top up if needed, then retry.

Billing-address mismatch

If the billing address you entered does not match the details on file for the card, the payment can be declined. Re-enter the address exactly as it appears in your Coinepay profile and try again.

3-D Secure / authentication

Messages like "authentication required" or "3D Secure attempt failed" mean the extra verification step did not complete. Make sure you can receive and approve the authentication prompt from your card provider, then repeat the purchase. If you keep seeing authentication errors, contact Coinepay support to confirm 3-D Secure is working for your card.

Merchant region checks

OpenAI requires the payment card to be issued by a bank in a supported region, and it limits API access to its published country list. If your card's issuing region is not supported, the charge can be declined regardless of balance. Because card-type and issuing-region rules come from OpenAI, confirm with Coinepay support that your card meets them rather than assuming it does.

Bank blocks and prepaid-card rule

Banks sometimes block online or international payments by default; a provider-side block can also cause a decline. Separately, OpenAI states prepaid cards are not supported for API credit purchases, so if that is the cause you will need a card that meets OpenAI's requirement. Coinepay support can help you confirm which of its cards is appropriate.

A $5 pending charge

After you update a payment method you may see a temporary $5 authorization hold. OpenAI describes this as a hold rather than a completed charge, and it typically clears on its own.

Managing, canceling and refunds

You can cancel pay-as-you-go billing from the organization's Billing overview > Cancel plan. Canceling does not erase charges you have already run up. If you turn off prepaid billing, auto-reload stops but any remaining credits stay usable; purchased credits expire one year after purchase.

Purchased API credits are generally non-refundable, except where law, contract or an approved exception applies. OpenAI lists verified billing errors, confirmed unauthorized activity, and certain confirmed service or account-restriction failures as possible grounds for a review.

A failed auto-reload sends you an email and does not replenish your balance, so if requests start failing, check both your email and your Coinepay card balance.

Keep your Coinepay card ready

Manage your virtual card around the clock from the Coinepay dashboard or the mobile app for iOS and Android, where you can check your balance and card details before a purchase. For questions about whether your card fits OpenAI's requirements, reach Coinepay support or the Coinepay community on Telegram. You can learn more about Coinepay's cards and services on the Coinepay site.

FAQ

Does my ChatGPT subscription cover OpenAI API usage?

No. OpenAI bills the API separately from ChatGPT. A ChatGPT plan and ChatGPT wallet funds do not pay an API bill; you add a payment method to your API organization and buy prepaid credits separately.

What card does OpenAI accept for API credits?

OpenAI accepts standard credit and debit cards for API-credit purchases and states that prepaid cards are not supported. The card must also be issued by a bank in a supported region. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets these requirements before buying.

How much do I need to spend to start?

The initial credit purchase minimum is $5 and the default is $10. Spending $5 in total purchases unlocks the Build tier, with higher tiers (Launch, Grow) unlocking at $100 and $500 in total purchases.

Why do I see a $5 pending charge after adding my card?

After updating a payment method, OpenAI may place a temporary $5 authorization hold to verify the card. It is a hold rather than a completed charge and generally clears on its own.

Can I get a refund on unused API credits?

Purchased API credits are generally non-refundable, except where law, contract or an approved exception applies. OpenAI lists verified billing errors, confirmed unauthorized activity, and certain confirmed service failures as possible grounds for review. Unused credits otherwise expire one year after purchase.
