Microsoft 365 Copilot adds AI assistance across Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and more. Paying for it is straightforward once your card and billing details are in order, but Microsoft's checkout has specific rules for personal versus work accounts. This guide walks through what you need, how to subscribe, and how to work through a declined payment when using a Coinepay virtual card.

Before you start

Set up a few things so checkout goes smoothly:

  • A verified Coinepay account. Register and complete identity verification (KYC) first, then create a virtual card in the Coinepay app or dashboard. You get an instant card number, expiry date and CVV. If you do not have an account yet, sign up here and install the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Enough balance on the card. Load more than the first charge so the authorisation and the subscription both clear.
  • Your real billing details. Use the name and billing address that match your Coinepay card exactly. A mismatch is one of the most common decline causes.
  • A Microsoft account (for individual plans) or access to your organisation's Microsoft 365 admin center (for work plans).

Copilot is not available in every market, and purchase depends on qualifying licenses, your tenant region and cloud environment. Confirm Copilot is offered in your country on Microsoft's own site before you buy.

Choose the right Microsoft 365 Copilot plan

Microsoft offers different Copilot options for individuals and for work, so pick the one that matches your situation:

  • Individuals: Copilot benefits come with paid plans named Microsoft 365 Personal, Microsoft 365 Family, Microsoft 365 Premium and Microsoft 365 Pro. With Family, Premium and Pro, the subscription can be shared but the owner's AI benefits are not.
  • Work add-on: Microsoft 365 Copilot is the work add-on that sits on top of a qualifying Microsoft 365 license, which is billed separately. Microsoft 365 Copilot Business targets organisations with up to 300 users.
  • Bundles: Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot and Microsoft 365 Business Premium with Copilot package the base license and Copilot together; "(no Teams)" versions also exist.
  • No extra charge: Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is included with an eligible work license, though some agents are metered.

At the time of writing (October 2026), US individual monthly prices were Personal $9.99, Family $12.99, Premium $19.99 and Pro $99.99 (Pro is monthly-billing only), and the work add-on Microsoft 365 Copilot was $30/user/month billed annually (the base license costs extra). Prices vary by region and by annual versus monthly terms, and promotions change, so always confirm the current figure on Microsoft's official pricing page before you commit.

Subscribe to an individual plan (step by step)

  1. Go to Microsoft's individual Copilot or Microsoft 365 page and select the plan you want.
  2. Choose Buy now, or an offered trial if you prefer to start free.
  3. Sign in to your Microsoft account, or create one.
  4. When asked for a payment method, add your Coinepay virtual card: enter the card number, expiry date and CVV, then the billing address exactly as it appears on your Coinepay profile.
  5. Review the order summary, including whether it renews monthly or annually.
  6. Place the order. If prompted by a 3-D Secure step, approve it in the Coinepay app.

Trials and subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel, so note the renewal date.

Add Copilot on a work account

  1. If you are an existing Microsoft 365 customer, you can add Copilot to a qualifying plan; a new enterprise customer selects a qualifying Microsoft 365 plan and adds Copilot during checkout.
  2. In the Microsoft 365 admin center, go to Billing → Payment methods to add a card, then assign it to the subscription.
  3. The advertised one-month business trial requires a credit card, converts automatically to the paid term and billing plan you selected, and can be cancelled during the trial to stop future charges.
Important for work purchases: Microsoft states that prepaid and stored-value cards, including Visa and Mastercard gift cards, are not valid payment methods for business subscriptions, and that a business payment method must be issued in the tenant's country or region. Before you buy, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets these requirements for your tenant's region.

Managing your subscription and payment method

  • Personal subscriptions: manage at account.microsoft.com/services → Manage → Change how you pay. The same page holds renewal and cancellation controls.
  • Work subscriptions: update cards under Billing → Payment methods, and cancel under Billing → Your products → [subscription] → Billing settings.
  • Bought through a reseller: if you got Microsoft 365 through Apple, Google or another retailer, billing changes and cancellation are handled by that seller, not Microsoft's dashboard.

Troubleshooting a declined card

If checkout fails, Microsoft may show messages such as "Decline reason: Declined by financial institution" or "Something went wrong and your payment could not be processed at this time." An expired or cancelled card on an active subscription can later trigger "ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription and need your help to fix it." Work through these causes:

Insufficient balance

Checkout places an authorisation and then the first charge. Top up your Coinepay card so it covers the full amount plus any currency conversion, then retry.

Billing address or name mismatch

Microsoft checks that the card details and billing address match your issuer's records. Re-enter the billing address exactly as shown in your Coinepay profile, with no typos in the postal code or country.

3-D Secure not completed

If a verification prompt appears, approve it promptly in the Coinepay app. Make sure app notifications are enabled so you don't miss the request and time out.

Merchant region and card-type checks

For business purchases, the card must be issued in the tenant's country or region, and prepaid or gift cards are not accepted. If Copilot is not offered in your market, the purchase cannot complete regardless of the card. Use your real details and a supported region rather than any workaround.

Inactive card, issuer block or overdue balance

Confirm the card is active in your Coinepay dashboard, and that an unpaid earlier charge isn't blocking the account. If everything looks correct and the payment still fails, contact Coinepay support to check for an issuer-side block, and reach Microsoft billing support to confirm there is no account-level issue.

Cancellations and refunds

For Microsoft-billed personal subscriptions, an initial purchase is generally refundable if cancelled within 30 days or before the first recurring bill, whichever is sooner; a renewal charge may be refundable within 30 days, once per account per subscription product. Prorated-refund rules vary by country. For directly purchased business subscriptions under a Microsoft Customer Agreement, cancellation within seven days of purchase or renewal can earn a prorated credit; after that, turning off renewal keeps access until term end, and monthly payments on an annual commitment remain due. Check Microsoft's current refund policy for your market.

Need help with your card?

For anything related to creating, funding or verifying your Coinepay virtual card, use the support centre or the Coinepay Telegram. For questions about plans, licenses or Copilot availability, Microsoft's own support and pricing pages are the authoritative source.

FAQ

Can I use a Coinepay virtual card for a Microsoft 365 Copilot business subscription?

Microsoft states that business subscriptions do not accept prepaid or stored-value cards, and that the payment method must be issued in the tenant's country or region. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets these requirements for your region before you buy.

Which Microsoft 365 plans include Copilot for individuals?

Copilot benefits come with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium and Pro. With Family, Premium and Pro the subscription can be shared, but the owner's AI benefits are not shared. Check Microsoft's individual pricing page for current details.

Why was my card declined at Microsoft checkout?

Common causes include insufficient balance, a billing-address or name mismatch, an uncompleted 3-D Secure prompt, an inactive card, an issuer block, or Copilot not being available in your region. Correct the details and retry, or contact Coinepay support.

How much does Microsoft 365 Copilot cost?

Prices vary by region, plan and billing term. At the time of writing (October 2026), US individual monthly prices ranged from $9.99 (Personal) to $99.99 (Pro), and the work add-on was $30/user/month billed annually plus a separate base license. Always check Microsoft's official pricing page.

Where do I update or cancel the card used for Copilot?

For personal subscriptions, go to account.microsoft.com/services, then Manage and Change how you pay. For work accounts, use the Microsoft 365 admin center under Billing. If you bought through a reseller like Apple or Google, manage billing with that seller.
