Hotels.com lets you book stays worldwide, join its free loyalty programme and earn reward nights. This guide walks through paying for a Hotels.com booking with a Coinepay virtual card, from getting your card ready to finishing checkout, and what to try if a payment is declined.
What you need before you book
A Coinepay virtual card comes with an instant card number, expiry date and CVV that you can use for online shopping and subscriptions. Before you start, make sure you have:
- A completed Coinepay account. You must register and finish identity verification (KYC) before your card can be used. Create your account if you have not already.
- A funded card with enough balance to cover the stay total shown at checkout, including taxes and fees.
- Your real billing details — the name and billing address linked to your Coinepay account. Always use your genuine identity and address; do not use made-up details to pass payment checks.
- The Coinepay app (iOS or Google Play) handy, so you can approve any verification prompt and check your balance.
One quick note: Coinepay does not control whether any specific property or site will accept a given card. If a booking matters, confirm the details below and keep a backup plan.
Do you need a paid membership? No
You do not pay a subscription fee to use Hotels.com. The loyalty programmes are free to join:
- United States — One Key: costs $0 to join. Its tiers are Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum; Blue starts at sign-up and the higher statuses are earned through qualifying trip elements (5, 15 and 30 respectively). Price checked October 2026 — always confirm on the official welcome page.
- United Kingdom — Hotels.com Rewards: joining is free (£0), with Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum tied to nights stayed (0–4, 5–14, 15–29 and 30+). The UK site also advertises £100 in Hotels.comCash after 10 eligible nights (a qualifying-night threshold of £75 applies) — that is a reward you earn, not a membership charge.
- Canada and Australia: both sites advertise free sign-up and a reward night after 10 nights.
So your Coinepay card is used to pay for actual stays, not a membership. Separately, the US-only One Key Card and One Key+ Card are Wells Fargo credit cards (the One Key+ Card advertised a $99 annual fee as of October 2026) — these are different products with their own credit approval, not loyalty-plan prices.
Step-by-step: paying for a Hotels.com booking
- Open your region's Hotels.com site and sign in or create an account. You can book as a guest, but a signed-in, eligible booking is what earns loyalty rewards. Rewards tied to another region may require visiting that region's site.
- Search and choose your stay. Enter dates, location and guests, then pick a property and room rate.
- Check the rate terms first. Before you pay, read the cancellation policy and whether it is refundable — these are shown on the booking page and vary by property and rate.
- Pick how you pay: Pay Now generally charges your payment method at booking, while Pay Later generally means the property charges you in its local currency at or around your stay. Availability, taxes and fees can differ between the two.
- Enter your Coinepay card details at the payment step: card number, expiry date and CVV, plus the cardholder name and billing address exactly as they appear in your Coinepay account.
- Complete any 3-D Secure step. If a verification prompt appears, approve it via the Coinepay app or the method shown, then return to Hotels.com.
- Review and confirm. Check the total and currency, then confirm. You should receive a confirmation and an itinerary number.
If you want to reuse the card later, you can save it by ticking the remember-card box at checkout, or manage preferred methods under Account → My Account Info.
A note on Pay Later and monthly instalments
With Pay Later, the property itself usually collects payment, often in its local currency. Make sure your Coinepay card still has sufficient balance when the property charges it, and be aware a currency conversion may apply on the property's side. Where offered, monthly instalments are provided by a separate payment partner — you sign up with that partner and return to Hotels.com to finish; this is not a Hotels.com membership instalment plan.
Accepted payment methods
The UK Hotels.com site publishes an accepted-payment list of American Express, Diners Club International, Mastercard, Visa, Visa Electron and PayPal. That is a UK-site list and is not confirmation that every method works for every property or in every market, and the US-wide card-brand list is not published in full. On Pay Now bookings you may also be able to apply eligible OneKeyCash or Hotels.comCash. If you are unsure your Coinepay card fits a site's accepted brands, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you book.
Troubleshooting: card declined
Hotels.com and the property may simply show a card as "declined" without a detailed reason. The issuing side can tell you the exact cause — work through these common ones:
Insufficient balance
Confirm your Coinepay balance covers the full total including taxes and fees. For Pay Later, keep enough balance for when the property charges later. Top up in the app and retry.
Billing address or name mismatch
Enter the cardholder name and billing address exactly as they appear in your Coinepay account. A mismatch is a frequent cause of declines.
3-D Secure not completed
If an authentication screen appears and times out or is dismissed, the payment can fail. Have the Coinepay app open to approve the prompt, then retry.
Merchant or region checks
Some sites and properties apply region or fraud checks, or hold a pre-authorisation that temporarily reduces your available balance. Insufficient funds, suspected fraud and exceeding an approval amount are general card-network examples, not a diagnosis for your specific booking. Double-check the details, wait a moment and try once more.
If the card keeps failing after these checks, confirm from the Coinepay app that the card is active and has balance, then reach Coinepay support. For a charge the property is collecting on a Pay Later stay, contact the property directly.
Cancellations and refunds
There is no universal free-cancellation rule — the property and rate terms govern deadlines, fees and refundability, and are shown before you book. Cancel an eligible stay through Trips/account → reservation → Change or cancel, and always check the property's local-time cutoff. Refunds go back to the original payment method from whoever took the payment, so a refund for a Pay Now booking would return to your Coinepay card. Hotels.com's own fees are non-refundable unless stated otherwise. For a property-collected Pay Later payment or deposit, contact the property about its charge or refund.
Keep your records clean
Book under your real identity and billing details, and keep your confirmation emails. Coinepay services are provided with licensed partner financial institutions, and some services are not available in every jurisdiction. You can manage your card and balance any time from the 24/7 Coinepay dashboard or the app.

FAQ
Does Hotels.com charge a subscription fee I pay with my card?
No. The One Key (US) and Hotels.com Rewards (UK) loyalty programmes are free to join. Your Coinepay card pays for actual stays, not a membership. The US-only One Key and One Key+ credit cards are separate Wells Fargo products.
Will my Coinepay virtual card definitely be accepted on Hotels.com?
Acceptance depends on the site, market and property, and Hotels.com does not publish a full card list for every region. Enter your real billing details, and if you are unsure, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card before booking.
Why was my card declined at checkout?
Common causes are insufficient balance, a billing address or name mismatch, an incomplete 3-D Secure step, or merchant region and fraud checks. Verify these in the Coinepay app and retry; your issuer can confirm the exact reason.
If I cancel, will the refund go back to my Coinepay card?
Refunds go to the original payment method used, so a Pay Now booking paid with your Coinepay card is refunded there, subject to the rate's cancellation terms. For Pay Later charges collected by the property, contact the property.
What's the difference between Pay Now and Pay Later for my card?
Pay Now generally charges your card at booking. Pay Later generally means the property charges you, often in its local currency, at or around your stay, so keep enough balance available for that later charge.
