Max — rebranded back to HBO Max by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2025 — is a subscription streaming service with plans that vary by country. If you manage your spending with a Coinepay virtual card, this guide walks through what you need, how direct checkout works at HBOMax.com, and how to troubleshoot a declined payment. Prices and plan names below come from HBO Max's own help pages and may change, so always confirm the current amount on the official HBOMax.com pricing page for your country.

What you need before you start

  • A Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed, and an issued virtual card showing its number, expiry date and CVV. You can register at the Coinepay sign-up page and manage everything from the dashboard or the iOS app or Android app.
  • Enough available balance on the card to cover the plan price plus any applicable tax. HBO Max lists prices excluding tax, so the amount charged can be slightly higher.
  • Your real billing details — name, billing address and postal/ZIP code — exactly as registered with Coinepay. HBO Max checks that the ZIP code or state matches the card's billing address.
  • An HBO Max account email, and a location within a country where HBO Max operates.
HBO Max requires a payment method that supports automatic recurring payments, and for U.S. direct checkout it requires a U.S.-issued credit or debit card. Some prepaid cards are also not accepted. Coinepay does not publish the issuing country or card type here, so contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets these requirements before you subscribe.

Know your plan and region first

HBO Max tiers are not uniform worldwide, so check what is offered where you are before paying:

  • United States: Basic with Ads ($10.99/month, $109.99/year), Standard ($18.49/month, $184.99/year) and Premium ($22.99/month, $229.99/year). A separate narrower HBO Only option is $18.49/month. Prices checked October 2026, tax excluded.
  • United Kingdom: Basic with Ads (£4.99), Standard with Ads (£5.99), Standard (£9.99) and Premium (£14.99) per month, plus TNT Sports (£30.99/month). A 12-month Saver plan is billed in monthly instalments and cancelling does not remove unpaid instalments for the current yearly term.
  • Ireland: Basic with Ads (€5.99), Standard with Ads (€6.99), Standard (€10.99) and Premium (€15.99) per month.
  • Brazil: Básico com Anúncios (R$29.90/month), Standard (R$44.90/month) and Platinum (R$55.90/month), with 12-month options. Brazil's 12-month plans and monthly Standard price changed in September 2025.
  • Other markets: names differ — Mexico uses Básico con anuncios, Estándar and Platino, and some Asia-Pacific markets list Standard and Premium with Mobile available only in specified markets. Prices in several countries vary by region; check the local HBOMax.com pricing page for your amount.

Step-by-step: subscribe at HBOMax.com

Paying directly on the web gives you the clearest view of the biller and payment method. HBO Max describes this flow:

  1. Go to HBOMax.com/product and select a plan or bundle for your country.
  2. Enter your email, then create an account or sign in.
  3. Add a payment method. When entering the card, type the Coinepay virtual card number, expiry date and CVV exactly as shown in your Coinepay app.
  4. Enter the billing address and postal/ZIP code that match your Coinepay registration.
  5. Start the subscription, then choose Start Streaming.

If a 3-D Secure or one-time-passcode step appears during payment, approve it through the method your card issuer uses. Keep your Coinepay app open so you can respond to any confirmation prompt.

You can also sign up through supported devices or third-party providers (for example an app store), but their available plans and accepted recurring-payment methods may differ, and billing is handled by that provider rather than HBO Max directly.

Accepted payment methods

For U.S. direct payments, HBOMax.com lists Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, JCB, PayPal and Apple Pay, and states that credit or debit cards must be U.S.-issued and support automatic recurring payments. In the UK the listed options are American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Mastercard, PayPal and Visa; Australia additionally lists JCB and UnionPay; Latin American card options vary by country. App stores and other providers set their own accepted methods. Because Coinepay does not state its card network or issuing country in this guide, confirm compatibility with Coinepay support rather than assuming your card qualifies.

Where to manage billing later

To change your card or review your plan, sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription, or open Profile → Subscription in the app (Settings → Subscription on a TV). The page identifies who bills you; if you are billed directly by HBO Max, you can select Payment Method to update the Coinepay card. If a third party bills you, make changes with that provider.

Troubleshooting a declined card

HBO Max lists several common causes of a payment failure. Work through these in order:

Incorrect card details

Re-enter the card number, expiry date and CVV directly from your Coinepay app. A single mistyped digit is enough to trigger a decline.

Billing address or ZIP mismatch

HBO Max specifically flags a ZIP code or state that does not match the card's billing address. Use the exact address and postal code registered with Coinepay — do not improvise or use someone else's details.

Insufficient balance

Check your available balance in the Coinepay app and make sure it covers the plan price plus tax. Remember the subscription auto-renews, so keep enough balance available for each billing cycle to avoid an interrupted subscription.

Recurring payments and prepaid cards

HBO Max requires cards that support automatic recurring payments and notes that some prepaid cards are not accepted. If a payment fails after your details and balance look correct, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card type can be used for recurring streaming subscriptions, and contact HBO Max support if their own troubleshooting does not resolve it.

Region checks

HBO Max is available only in its listed countries and territories. An incorrectly located IP address or a VPN can trigger "This is Uncharted Territory" or "Not available in your region yet." Subscribe only from a country where the service genuinely operates and where you are entitled to use it; do not use a VPN or false location to bypass these checks. Note recent launches: HBO Max went live in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Israel and Greece on 13 January 2026, and in the UK and Ireland on 26 March 2026.

Error messages you may see

Users have reported a "Last Payment Declined" notice when updating a card and a "payment method was declined" email when resubscribing through Google Pay. These messages indicate a failed transaction but do not, by themselves, explain the cause — run through the checks above and reach out to the relevant support team.

Cancellation and refunds

Subscriptions auto-renew, and deleting the app does not cancel. For direct billing, go to HBOMax.com/subscription → Cancel Your Subscription → confirm; you keep access through the paid period. If a third party bills you, cancel with them. HBO Max states a no-refund policy for subscriptions it bills directly, with one exception it names: a prorated refund of unused Extra Member Add-On time when the base plan expires. Third-party refund rules depend on the biller.

FAQ

Can I use a Coinepay virtual card to pay for HBO Max?

You can try, but HBO Max requires a payment method that supports automatic recurring payments, and for U.S. direct checkout a U.S.-issued card; some prepaid cards are not accepted. Coinepay does not publish its card type or issuing country here, so contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets these requirements before subscribing.

Why was my card declined at HBO Max checkout?

HBO Max lists incorrect card details, a ZIP code or state that doesn't match the billing address, cards without recurring-payment support, and some prepaid cards as common causes. Re-enter your details, confirm your Coinepay balance covers the price plus tax, and use the exact billing address registered with Coinepay.

How much does HBO Max cost?

Prices vary by country. For example, in the U.S. (October 2026) Basic with Ads is $10.99/month, Standard $18.49/month and Premium $22.99/month, excluding tax. In the UK, Ireland, Brazil and other markets the plan names and prices differ. Always check the current amount on your local HBOMax.com pricing page.

Where do I update the card HBO Max charges?

Sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription or open Profile → Subscription in the app (Settings → Subscription on TV). If HBO Max bills you directly, select Payment Method to update your Coinepay card. If a third party bills you, update the card with that provider.

Can I get a refund if I cancel HBO Max?

HBO Max states a no-refund policy for subscriptions it bills directly, though you keep access through the paid period after cancelling. The one named exception is a prorated refund of unused Extra Member Add-On time when the base plan expires. If a third party bills you, their refund rules apply.
