GroqCloud lets you start on its Free plan and move to the usage-based Developer plan when you need paid API access. This guide explains how to prepare a Coinepay virtual card, add a payment method to GroqCloud, understand when charges occur, and investigate a declined card. Card acceptance depends on Groq’s checkout requirements and the payment checks applied to your account.

Understand GroqCloud billing before you add a card

Groq names three plans: Free, Developer, and Enterprise. Free has no usage charges within its limits. Developer is pay-as-you-go rather than a fixed-price monthly subscription. Enterprise pricing is arranged through sales or an order form. If you are looking at API service-tier documentation, on_demand, flex, and the enterprise-only performance tier describe service options, not separate billing plans; auto selects an available tier.

Groq’s agreement specifies USD unless an order form provides another currency. Developer charges vary by model and usage. For example, at the time of writing (October 2026), Groq listed GPT-OSS 120B at $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens, and Whisper Large V3 Turbo at $0.04 per audio hour. Check Groq’s official model and pricing pages before choosing a model, because published rates can change.

Upgrading from Free to Developer requires a valid payment method and takes effect immediately, but the upgrade itself does not create an immediate usage charge. Subsequent usage can be charged automatically when Groq issues an invoice. That distinction matters when deciding how much balance to keep available for future payments.

What you need before checkout

  • A GroqCloud account: The GroqCloud sign-in page offers Google, GitHub, SSO, and email. Continuing with sign-up means accepting Groq’s Services Agreement. Use your own account and accurate identity and billing information.
  • A Coinepay account and virtual card: Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Once issued, your virtual card has a card number, expiry date, and CVV, available through Coinepay’s self-service tools.
  • An available balance: Check your card’s available funds in Coinepay and plan for usage-based charges, not just the initial upgrade. Check the app or contact Coinepay support for any funding details relevant to your account.
  • A compatible payment method: Groq’s billing FAQ lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover credit cards, as well as eligible US bank accounts and SEPA debit accounts. It does not establish that every virtual card qualifies. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets Groq’s stated card requirement before you buy; Groq can determine whether to accept a payment method at checkout.

Use your real billing address and only sign up where you are eligible to use both services. Coinepay services are not available in every jurisdiction, and Groq’s terms restrict uses that breach export-control laws. Neither a virtual card nor an alternative billing address changes those requirements.

How to add a Coinepay card to GroqCloud

  1. Prepare your card. Register with Coinepay if you have not already, complete the required identity verification, and use the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app to view your issued virtual card’s number, expiry date, and CVV. Check its available balance before proceeding.
  2. Sign in to GroqCloud. Open GroqCloud’s official Console and choose Google, GitHub, SSO, or email, as appropriate. Review its terms when creating your account.
  3. Choose the appropriate plan. Start with Free if its limits suit your needs. When you need paid usage, follow the Console’s option to move to Developer. Groq requires a valid payment method for that upgrade. For Enterprise, discuss pricing and payment arrangements with Groq sales rather than assuming the self-service Developer flow applies.
  4. Open billing controls. In the Console, go to Settings → Billing → Manage Billing to manage payment details. Follow the payment form presented for your account; its exact fields may vary.
  5. Enter accurate card and billing details. Copy the card number, expiry date, and CVV from Coinepay. Enter your genuine name and billing address, matching the details associated with your payment method. Review the information before submitting it. If your checkout presents an authentication step, complete it using the legitimate prompt shown for your card.
  6. Confirm and monitor. Check the Console to see whether Developer is active or whether Groq asks you to correct the payment method. Once you begin using the API, Dashboard → Usage shows usage and estimated charges. Return to Settings → Billing → Manage Billing for payment details, invoices, and receipts.

Do not assume that saving a card guarantees acceptance of every later charge. Keep an eye on actual invoices as well as estimated usage, particularly if your application’s API traffic changes.

When does Groq charge the card?

Groq invoices Developer usage monthly in arrears or when initial cumulative billing thresholds are reached: $1, $10, $100, $500, and $1,000. Payment is taken automatically when an invoice is issued. Groq says amounts below $0.50 are not billed. For an Indian billing address, its published progressive thresholds are $1, $10, and then each additional $100 instead of the usual later $500 and $1,000 milestones.

These are Groq billing thresholds, not Coinepay card limits or fixed prices for the Developer plan. Your usage and selected model determine the amount owed. Review Dashboard → Usage for estimates and Settings → Billing → Manage Billing for invoices. If you need to know what funds or payment options are available on your Coinepay account, check the Coinepay app or ask support.

How to troubleshoot a declined card

Groq does not publish a definitive list of issuer decline messages, so use the reason displayed at checkout or on an invoice as your starting point. Avoid repeatedly resubmitting unchanged details. Groq allows up to two payment retries for a failed payment, recommends updating the payment method first, and warns that persistent failure can suspend service.

  • Insufficient available balance: Check the card’s available funds in Coinepay against the amount Groq is trying to collect. Remember that an invoice can arise after usage accumulates, not just when you upgrade. If funds are insufficient, use the funding options shown for your account and retry only when the balance is adequate.
  • Billing address or card-detail mismatch: Recheck the card number, expiry date, CVV, and billing address for mistakes. Enter your real billing details; do not substitute an address in another country to try to pass a payment check.
  • Authentication or 3-D Secure prompt: If an authentication step appears, follow the on-screen instructions and complete it promptly. If the prompt fails, expires, or never reaches you, note what happened and ask Coinepay support whether your card can complete the authentication requested. Do not treat a missing prompt as proof that a payment succeeded.
  • Card-type or merchant-region check: Groq lists specific credit-card brands for self-service billing, and geographic eligibility differs for its US-bank and SEPA-debit alternatives. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets Groq’s stated card requirement. If Groq rejects the payment method or your genuine billing region, contact Groq through its official support channels to clarify your options; do not attempt to bypass its checks.

If a payment has already failed, update the method in Settings → Billing → Manage Billing before another permitted retry. Keep the invoice reference and the exact message you saw when contacting the relevant support team. Coinepay can help investigate card-side issues; Groq can explain the status of a GroqCloud invoice or account.

Manage or stop Developer billing

You can review payment details, invoices, and receipts under Settings → Billing → Manage Billing. To return from Developer to Free, go to Settings → Billing and follow the downgrade option. Groq issues a final invoice for outstanding usage, which must be paid before the downgrade completes. Enterprise customers may have separate contractual financial commitments.

If you believe a charge is incorrect, compare the invoice with your usage records and contact Groq. Its billing FAQ says refund requests are reviewed case by case; applicable terms also address service credits for Groq-attributable billing inaccuracies and state that prepaid Service Credits are nonrefundable. Do not assume that downgrading erases charges already incurred.

FAQ

Is Groq Developer a monthly subscription?

No. Developer is pay-as-you-go. Groq automatically collects payment when it invoices usage, either monthly in arrears or at its published cumulative thresholds.

Will Groq charge my card as soon as I upgrade from Free?

Groq says the upgrade takes effect immediately but does not itself trigger an immediate usage charge. Subsequent usage can result in an invoice and automatic payment.

Does Groq accept every Coinepay virtual card?

Acceptance is not guaranteed. Groq lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover credit cards for billing. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets that requirement before you buy.

Where can I update a failed Groq payment method?

In GroqCloud, go to Settings → Billing → Manage Billing. Update the payment method before retrying; Groq permits up to two retries for a failed payment.

Can I downgrade Groq Developer with an unpaid invoice?

You can request a downgrade under Settings → Billing, but Groq says outstanding usage receives a final invoice that must be paid before the downgrade completes.
