AssemblyAI is a speech-to-text and audio intelligence platform that developers pay for on a pay-as-you-go basis: you add a card, deposit funds, and your API usage draws down the balance. This guide shows how to fund an AssemblyAI account using a Coinepay virtual card, where the billing settings live, and what to do if a payment is declined.
Coinepay issues virtual cards with an instant card number, expiry date and CVV, which you can use for AI subscriptions, software, advertising and online shopping. Before you start, make sure you have an eligible Coinepay account and that AssemblyAI is available where you live.
What you need before you start
- A verified Coinepay account. Register and complete identity verification (KYC) first. You can create an account and manage everything from the iOS app, the Android app, or the web dashboard.
- A Coinepay virtual card with available balance. Open the card in your Coinepay app to view its number, expiry and CVV, and top it up before you check out.
- Your real billing details. Use the name and billing address tied to your own identity. AssemblyAI quotes and charges fees in USD unless otherwise specified, so expect a USD transaction.
- An AssemblyAI account. You can sign up on the Free tier without a card and add one later.
AssemblyAI says it accepts all major credit cards. It does not publish a confirmed list of card networks, nor a confirmed policy on debit or prepaid cards, so if your use depends on that, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy.
Understand AssemblyAI's plans and billing model
AssemblyAI's documentation names four plan categories — Free, PAYG (pay-as-you-go), Contracted and Enterprise — while the public pricing page presents paid rates as "Pay as you go" and sales-negotiated "Custom." Free accounts receive $50 in credits; the billing documentation says those credits do not expire, and the pricing page describes the allowance as up to roughly 185 hours of pre-recorded or 333 hours of streaming transcription, depending on use.
Paid use is metered. At the time of writing (October 2026), the pricing page lists examples such as pre-recorded Universal-3.5 Pro at $0.21/hour and Universal-2 at $0.15/hour, realtime Universal-3.6 Pro Realtime at $0.45/hour, Sync API at $0.30/hour, Dictation API at $0.62/hour and Voice Agent API at $4.50/hour, before separately priced add-ons. These are list rates that change over time, so always check the official AssemblyAI pricing page for current numbers. Contracted and Enterprise pricing is negotiated with sales.
Instead of a fixed monthly subscription, you deposit funds and usage draws them down. Optional auto-pay can recharge your card when the balance crosses a threshold you choose. There is no ordinary monthly plan to cancel; you simply manage the balance and auto-pay.
Step-by-step: add your Coinepay card and deposit funds
- Create or sign in to AssemblyAI. You can start on Free without a card; adding a card upgrades the account to paid use, and any unused free credits remain.
- Open billing. In the dashboard, go to Workspace → Settings → Billing. You can also use the View billing details shortcut at the bottom left of the dashboard. Only Owners and Admins can view or edit billing; Readers cannot.
- Add your card. Choose to add or update a card, then enter your Coinepay virtual card number, expiry date and CVV exactly as shown in the Coinepay app.
- Enter billing details. As of August 24, 2026, billing address, company name and tax ID are self-service dashboard edits. Enter the billing address that matches your Coinepay card profile.
- Deposit funds. Add the amount you want available for API usage. Confirm the charge; if your bank sends a 3-D Secure prompt, approve it in the Coinepay app.
- Configure auto-pay (optional). Set a threshold so the card is charged automatically when your balance runs low. Keep enough balance on the Coinepay card to cover these recharges. Note that an active paid SSO connection requires auto-pay to stay enabled.
Once funded, your API keys will draw down the deposited balance as you transcribe audio. Invoices are available from the same Billing page.
If your card is declined: common causes and fixes
AssemblyAI does not publish specific checkout-decline wording, so if a payment fails, work through the usual causes below. One message you may see in the API is {"error": "Your current account balance is negative. Please top up to continue using the API."} — but that is a balance warning for existing usage, not proof that your bank declined a card. Treat them separately.
Insufficient balance
A virtual card payment needs enough available funds to cover the deposit plus any card checks. Open your Coinepay app, confirm the balance, top up if needed, and retry. Remember to leave a buffer for auto-pay recharges so future top-ups don't fail.
Billing address mismatch (AVS)
If the billing address you typed into AssemblyAI doesn't match the address on your Coinepay card profile, the payment can be rejected. Check the address in your Coinepay app and enter it identically on the AssemblyAI Billing page, then save and retry.
3-D Secure / verification step
Some payments trigger an extra verification step. Make sure notifications are enabled in the Coinepay app so you can approve the prompt, and complete it promptly before it times out.
Card details entered incorrectly
Re-check the card number, expiry and CVV against what the Coinepay app displays. A single wrong digit will cause a decline.
Merchant or region checks
AssemblyAI's Terms prohibit accessing the service from jurisdictions where doing so is restricted by applicable export law, and it does not publish a confirmed list of eligible billing countries or card restrictions. If payments fail repeatedly and your card and balance are correct, contact AssemblyAI support ([email protected]) to confirm your account is eligible, and contact Coinepay support to confirm your card is suitable for this merchant. Always use your real location and details — never try to bypass a regional or payment check.
Managing, stopping and refunds
Because there is no monthly subscription, you control spending by managing your balance and auto-pay. You can generally disable auto-pay in Billing, except where an active paid SSO connection requires it — delete that connection first. For reference, SSO became available to PAYG accounts on August 14, 2026 as a paid add-on, listed at $199 per connection per month with auto-pay requirements.
A sole account member who wants to close the account can use Workspace → Settings → Organization & Access → Danger Zone; deletion is permanent. Under the July 1, 2026 Terms, paid fees are generally non-refundable unless the Terms or an order form say otherwise, so spend deliberately and deposit only what you expect to use.
A note on alternative checkout
AssemblyAI is also available via AWS Marketplace, where billing runs through your AWS account rather than a card added in the AssemblyAI dashboard. Its listing describes a 90-day trial with $50 usage credits followed automatically by pay-as-you-go. If you take that route, the card used is the one on your AWS account, not AssemblyAI's Billing page.

FAQ
Can I pay for AssemblyAI with a Coinepay virtual card?
You can add a Coinepay virtual card under Workspace → Settings → Billing and deposit funds that your API usage draws down. AssemblyAI says it accepts all major credit cards but doesn't publish a confirmed card-network or prepaid policy, so check with Coinepay support if your use depends on that.
Where do I add or update my card in AssemblyAI?
Go to Workspace → Settings → Billing, or use the View billing details shortcut at the bottom left of the dashboard. Only Owners and Admins can view or edit billing; Readers cannot.
Is there a monthly subscription to cancel?
No. AssemblyAI is pay-as-you-go: you deposit funds and usage draws them down. You manage spending by topping up and by enabling or disabling auto-pay in Billing, except where an active paid SSO connection requires auto-pay to stay on.
Why was my card declined at AssemblyAI checkout?
Common causes are insufficient balance, a billing address that doesn't match your card profile, an unapproved 3-D Secure prompt, or mistyped card details. Fix those first. The negative-balance API error is a usage warning, not a bank decline.
Will I get a refund if I deposit too much?
Under AssemblyAI's July 1, 2026 Terms, paid fees are generally non-refundable unless the Terms or an order form state otherwise. Deposit only what you expect to use, and contact AssemblyAI support for billing questions.
