Buying an eSIM before travelling can save you from looking for mobile data after you arrive. The difficult part is choosing a package that covers your trip, works with your phone and starts when you expect it to. This guide walks through those checks, online checkout with a Coinepay virtual card, and setup before departure.

What to check before you buy

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile, so you do not need to remove your physical SIM to install one. You do, however, need a compatible, carrier-unlocked phone. Also check whether your home carrier already includes useful international roaming or offers a travel pass; a separate eSIM may not be necessary for your trip.

  • Phone compatibility: On iPhone, open Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. For use with a travel eSIM from another carrier, it should say “No SIM Restrictions.” iPhone eSIM support begins with iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, but the model and country of purchase still matter. On Android, an EID or Add eSIM option is a useful clue, not a guarantee; confirm an uncertain model with its manufacturer or carrier.
  • Actual coverage: Read the package’s named countries and supported networks. A label such as “Europe” or “global” is not a substitute for checking every destination and stopover where you need service. A single-country package will not cover travel outside its listed area.
  • What the plan provides: Check the seller’s Plan Type. A Data Only package does not provide ordinary calls or SMS; Data, Voice & Text does. If you need to receive an SMS verification code, decide how you will do that before buying.
  • Package terms: Compare the data allowance, duration, hotspot rules and any high-speed or fair-use conditions for the specific package. “Unlimited” does not necessarily mean full-speed data throughout.

Have your destination and travel dates, exact phone model, and a reliable email address ready. Check the seller’s cancellation and refund policy before checkout, particularly whether installation changes your options.

How to buy the eSIM with a Coinepay virtual card

  1. Choose a seller and package. You can shop through a destination carrier’s website or app, or a travel eSIM provider such as Airalo. Select the destination, review the package details and confirm that the seller supports your device. Prices vary by region and package; use the seller’s official pricing page and checkout for the current amount.
  2. Read the Validity Policy. Some packages begin their validity period when installed; others begin when the installed eSIM first connects to a supported network at the destination. For Airalo, buying a package early does not itself begin its validity period, but an individual package may have a deadline for putting it into use. Check the terms of the package you select before deciding when to install it.
  3. Set up Coinepay. Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. In the Coinepay app or 24/7 self-service dashboard, access your virtual card details: card number, expiry date and CVV. Check the app for any account-specific information you need before paying.
  4. Complete the seller’s checkout. Enter your real name and billing details, then use the Coinepay virtual card details in the seller’s online card-payment form. Review the destination, package and final order details before submitting. A Coinepay card can be used for online shopping, but whether a particular eSIM seller accepts a payment is determined at checkout. If the seller specifies restrictions on eligible cards or their country of issue, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets those requirements before you buy.
  5. Keep the order instructions. Depending on the seller, installation details may appear in its app or arrive as a QR code, link or manual activation information. Save the order confirmation and follow the instructions for your exact package rather than assuming every eSIM installs the same way.

If you prefer to manage the card on your phone, Coinepay has an iOS app and an Android app. You do not need Coinepay Global Remittance for an ordinary online eSIM card checkout.

Install before departure, then connect at your destination

Install while you have a stable internet connection, but follow the package’s Validity Policy first: installing early may start some packages. A successful installation at home does not prove that a destination-only package has coverage where you currently are.

  • iPhone: If the carrier supplies a QR code and your iPhone is already set up, scan the code with Camera and follow the “Cellular Plan Detected” prompt. On iOS 17.4 or later, you may also be able to press and hold a QR code received in the default email app or browser. If your iPhone runs iOS 26 or later, a pre-purchased travel eSIM may show travel-specific setup and a prompt to turn it on when you arrive.
  • Pixel: The settings route is Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM.
  • Galaxy: On phones showing the option, go to Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR code.

At the destination, turn on the travel line and select it for mobile data. Enable data roaming on that travel line if its provider instructs you to. If you leave your home line active for calls or texts, your home carrier may still charge for roaming; check its terms and turn off its data roaming or the line if appropriate. Keep access to the seller’s installation and connection instructions in case you need them without mobile data.

Identity checks and destination rules

Use your real identity and accurate billing information. Coinepay requires registration and identity verification for card services; the eSIM seller or destination carrier may have separate checks. A local prepaid eSIM may require identification such as a passport, while other products may ask for additional documents. Requirements depend on the provider and destination, so check the seller’s instructions before paying rather than assuming an online purchase removes local requirements.

For example, a tourist buying a local mobile connection in India may be asked for passport and valid-visa documents plus a local reference or accommodation address. In the United Arab Emirates, e& lists passport and visa requirements for in-person issue of its Visitor Line. These are examples tied to particular local arrangements, not rules for every travel eSIM. In Türkiye, access to some websites selling foreign-operator eSIMs has been blocked domestically; if your chosen seller is affected, arrange legitimate access to its order and installation instructions before travel. Follow applicable local rules and the provider’s terms.

Troubleshooting purchase and connection problems

  • Your payment fails: Recheck the card number, expiry date, CVV and your real billing details. Look for any message from the seller or in your Coinepay account. If the seller specifies card eligibility requirements, confirm them with Coinepay support; for an unresolved checkout error, ask the seller what it means. Avoid repeatedly placing the same order without checking whether one succeeded.
  • You cannot add the eSIM: Confirm that the phone supports eSIM, is carrier-unlocked and has internet access. Check whether you are using the correct QR code, link or manual details for that order, and follow the seller’s device instructions.
  • The eSIM installs but has no data: Check that you are within its listed coverage area, the travel line is on and it is selected for mobile data. Then review the package’s network, APN and data-roaming instructions. Do not change settings at random or assume coverage at home for a destination-only plan.
  • You bought the wrong package: Contact the seller and check its refund policy before installation or deletion. For example, Airalo’s wrong-purchase or changed-plans refunds depend on eligibility and may be issued as Airalo account credit rather than returned to the original payment method.

Do not delete an installed eSIM merely to troubleshoot. Some travel eSIMs cannot normally be reinstalled after deletion, although a provider may offer recovery for an eligible package. Ask the seller for help first, and keep your order details available when you contact them.

FAQ

Can I buy an eSIM before leaving home?

Yes. Check your phone, destination coverage, package terms and Validity Policy first. You can buy online before departure, then install according to the seller’s instructions.

Does installing a travel eSIM start the plan?

It depends on the package. Some validity periods begin on installation; others begin when the eSIM first connects to a supported destination network. Read the specific Validity Policy.

Can a Data Only eSIM receive SMS verification codes?

A Data Only plan does not provide ordinary SMS. Check for a Data, Voice & Text plan or make another legitimate arrangement for receiving your codes.

What should I do if the eSIM installs but will not connect?

Check coverage, turn on the travel line, select it for mobile data and follow the provider’s network, APN and roaming instructions. Contact the seller before deleting the eSIM.
