Trying to pay for an AI tool, software subscription or online ad from Sri Lanka can be frustrating when a locally issued card is declined. A Coinepay virtual card gives eligible users card details for online checkout, but it does not override Sri Lankan foreign-exchange rules or a merchant’s payment checks. Here is how to set one up, use it responsibly and work through a failed payment.

Why might a Sri Lankan card fail on a foreign website?

A decline does not always mean there is a problem with the website. A local issuer may not have enabled international or online payments on a card, or it may apply foreign-currency and online spending limits. Banks can also restrict particular transaction categories. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has noted that individual banks apply their own foreign-exchange card controls, so the issuing bank is the right place to ask about a declined payment on a locally issued card.

The merchant has checks of its own. It may compare the card’s issuing region with the account region, require a billing address it can verify, or reject a payment that does not satisfy its card or fraud-prevention policies. A subscription can also fail after an initial purchase if its next renewal cannot be authorized.

Sri Lanka’s currency is the Sri Lanka rupee (LKR). A website displaying a price in another currency may therefore involve a foreign-currency payment. Check the merchant’s checkout terms and the rules that apply to your payment method rather than assuming that a working domestic card will work abroad.

Check the rules before making an international payment

Sri Lankan foreign-exchange guidance uses the term Electronic Fund Transfer Card (EFTC) for certain payment cards. Its published guidance allows EFTCs to be used for payments to non-residents for current transactions of a personal nature, subject to the applicable directions. Rules can differ for corporate cards and certain foreign-currency accounts. An online subscription is not automatically permitted just because a website accepts cards.

The EFTC directions also identify prohibited foreign-payment uses, including forex trading, payments connected with virtual-currency transactions, betting or gambling outside Sri Lanka, and specified commercial-import payments. A virtual payment card is not the same thing as virtual currency. If you are paying on behalf of a business, especially for goods or imports, confirm the applicable rules with your bank or a qualified local adviser before paying. Use your real identity and billing details, and follow both local requirements and the merchant’s terms.

Coinepay’s services are not available in every jurisdiction. Eligibility and the options available to your account should be checked in the Coinepay app or with Coinepay support. Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions; do not assume that a card offered to someone in Sri Lanka is a locally issued Sri Lankan card.

How to get a Coinepay virtual card

  1. Register. Start at Coinepay registration, or get the Coinepay app for iOS or Android. Enter your own accurate account information.
  2. Complete identity verification. Coinepay requires registration and identity verification (KYC) before you can use card services. Follow the document and information requests shown for your account. Do not use someone else’s identity or details.
  3. Review the card options shown to you. Once eligible, use the app or 24/7 self-service dashboard to request and manage a virtual card. Coinepay issues virtual cards with a card number, expiry date and CVV. Check the app for the options and terms currently available to you.
  4. Add funds using the available instructions. Follow the funding steps presented in your Coinepay account and make sure the available balance can cover the intended payment. If a funding method or transaction is unclear, ask support before sending money. Do not assume a particular local bank-transfer method is available.

Treat the card number, expiry date and CVV as sensitive. Enter them only on a checkout page you intended to use, and never send card details or a transaction one-time password to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. If you are setting up business advertising, Coinepay lets businesses issue a dedicated virtual card for each ad account, such as a Google, Facebook or TikTok ad account, and set a custom spending limit per card.

Pay for an overseas subscription or online purchase

  1. Check the service and its region rules. Visit the product’s official site, choose the subscription or item you need, and read its billing and availability terms. Prices vary by product and region; use the product’s official pricing page for the current amount.
  2. Choose card payment at checkout. Where the merchant offers it, enter your Coinepay card number, expiry date and CVV. Use your real name and genuine billing details as requested. Do not select a different country or invent an address to make a payment go through.
  3. Review the order before confirming. Check the billing currency, whether the charge repeats, and any trial or cancellation terms. If the merchant requires additional verification, complete its legitimate prompts rather than repeatedly retrying a failed payment.
  4. Keep track of renewals. After a successful purchase, manage the subscription in the merchant’s account settings and monitor card activity in Coinepay. If you cancel, follow the merchant’s cancellation process and retain its confirmation.

Common reasons to need an international online payment in Sri Lanka include ChatGPT for AI work, Canva or Adobe Creative Cloud for design, Google Ads or Meta Ads for campaigns, and software or goods sold by overseas websites. These are examples of services people may wish to pay for, not a promise that any particular merchant will accept a Coinepay card. Each service decides its own account-region, billing and payment requirements.

What to do if your payment is declined

  • Recheck the entry. Confirm the card number, expiry date, CVV and requested billing information without sharing them with a third party. A mistyped detail can stop checkout.
  • Check the account and intended charge. Review your Coinepay card status and available funds in the app or dashboard. For a business card, also review its custom spending limit. Account-specific information is more useful than assuming all cards have the same settings.
  • Read the merchant’s message. A message about an unsupported payment method, region or billing information may point to a merchant rule rather than a temporary error. Check the service’s official help or billing page. Do not change your location details to evade its rules.
  • Consider local restrictions. If the transaction involves foreign currency or a restricted activity, check whether it is permitted under the rules that apply to you. If it is a locally issued card that failed, ask its issuing bank about its international-payment settings and controls.
  • Ask for help with a Coinepay decline. Contact Coinepay support with the merchant name, approximate transaction time and the error text. Do not include your full card number, CVV or one-time password in a support message. Support can help you review your account and card status; the merchant may still make the final checkout decision.

If you manage several subscriptions or ad accounts, keep a record of which card is attached to each service. When a renewal fails, first identify the affected merchant and card, then check the merchant’s notice and your Coinepay account. This is safer and more informative than submitting the same payment repeatedly.

Use the card within the rules that apply to you

A virtual card can make online card details available without waiting for a physical card, but it is not a workaround for currency controls, prohibited transactions or regional eligibility. Before paying for a new category of overseas goods or services, confirm that the purchase is allowed for your circumstances. For Coinepay account questions, check the app or contact support; for Sri Lankan foreign-exchange obligations, seek guidance from your bank or an appropriate local professional.

FAQ

Why does my Sri Lankan bank card work locally but fail on an overseas site?

Its issuer may restrict international or online payments or apply foreign-currency controls. The merchant may also reject the card or billing region. Ask the issuing bank about a locally issued card’s decline.

Can I use a Coinepay virtual card for ChatGPT or Google Ads?

Coinepay cards can be used for categories such as AI subscriptions and advertising, but each merchant applies its own payment and region rules. Check the merchant’s requirements before purchasing.

Do I need to verify my identity to get a Coinepay virtual card?

Yes. You must register and complete identity verification before using Coinepay card services.

What if a merchant says my card or billing region is unsupported?

Check the merchant’s official billing requirements and use only your real details. Contact Coinepay support if you need help checking your card status; do not try to bypass the merchant’s region rules.
