If you live or run a business in Malawi, you have probably hit a wall at an international checkout: your card is accepted at shops in Lilongwe or Blantyre, but a foreign website rejects it when you try to subscribe to an AI tool or pay for software. This guide explains why that happens and how a Coinepay virtual card gives you card details designed for online, cross-border payments.

Why Malawi-issued cards are often declined abroad

A card that works locally can still fail on a foreign website for several reasons, and most of them have nothing to do with you doing anything wrong:

  • International or online use is off by default. Many Malawian banks keep foreign and e-commerce transactions disabled until you ask for them. First Capital Bank, for example, publishes separate forms to whitelist a card for online use and for international use, so a card can work in Malawi yet be blocked abroad.
  • Foreign-currency and online limits. Some issuers tie international spending to a foreign-exchange allocation, so a transaction can be refused even when your account has funds.
  • Currency controls. Under Malawi's Foreign Exchange Act, 2025, buying or selling foreign currency must go through an authorised dealer, and banks apply this when processing cross-border card payments. Always keep your foreign-currency spending within the rules that apply to you.
  • Merchant region checks. Foreign sites sometimes screen the card's issuing country, or you may hit a one-time-password (OTP) step that the local card cannot complete for that merchant.

A local option exists — TNM Mpamba, with National Bank of Malawi, launched a wallet-linked Mastercard virtual card in August 2021 that gives a 16-digit number, security code and expiry for online checkout. Current issuance terms, pricing and limits are best confirmed directly with TNM, as the 2021 launch details may no longer apply.

How a Coinepay virtual card helps

Coinepay issues virtual cards built for international online payments. When your card is created you instantly receive a card number, expiry date and CVV, so you can start paying at supported online merchants without waiting for anything in the post. You manage everything from the Coinepay app and the 24/7 self-service dashboard.

Coinepay cards are commonly used to pay for advertising, AI subscriptions, software and online shopping. Businesses can go further and issue a dedicated card for each advertising account — for example Facebook, Google or TikTok — and set a custom spending limit on each one, which keeps ad budgets separated and easier to reconcile.

Step 1: Register and complete identity verification (KYC)

You must register and complete identity verification before you can use card services. Use your real identity and real billing details — this is a regulatory requirement, not an optional step.

  1. Create your account from the Coinepay sign-up page, or download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Submit the identity details and documents requested during KYC. Have a government ID ready; Malawi's National ID number is eight characters, so enter it exactly as printed.
  3. Wait for verification to be confirmed in the app. Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions.

Note that services related to virtual assets are not available to residents of mainland China, and some services are not available in every jurisdiction. If you are unsure whether a service is available to you in Malawi, check the app or contact support before you rely on it.

Step 2: Add funds and create your card

Once verified, open the card section of the dashboard or app to create a virtual card. Your card number, expiry and CVV appear on screen immediately. Add funds using the methods shown in your account, and keep a working balance so a payment is not refused for insufficient funds. Coinepay supports multiple currencies; the exact details you see are shown in the app.

For specific fees, funding options, supported currencies and any limits, check the Coinepay app or contact support — these can vary and are always shown to you before you commit.

Step 3: Use the card at an international checkout

  1. At the merchant's payment page, choose to pay by card.
  2. Enter your Coinepay card number, expiry date and CVV.
  3. For the billing address, enter your real address details as held on your Coinepay account.
  4. Approve any one-time-password or app confirmation step if prompted.

Keep the card details private, just as you would any card. You can track transactions in the dashboard as they happen.

Popular services people in Malawi pay for

  • AI subscriptions — tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and other AI assistants.
  • Software and cloud — design, productivity and developer subscriptions billed monthly or yearly.
  • Advertising — Facebook, Google and TikTok ad accounts, with a separate card per account for businesses.
  • Online shopping — international stores and digital marketplaces.

Never guess a plan or price. Prices vary by region, so check the service's official pricing page before you subscribe. Also remember that whether any particular merchant accepts a given card is decided by that merchant; if a service states it does not accept certain card types or only cards issued in certain countries, contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets that requirement before you buy.

Troubleshooting declined payments

What you seeWhat to try
Payment refused immediatelyCheck your card balance in the app and top up if needed before retrying.
OTP or verification step failsConfirm the prompt in the Coinepay app and make sure notifications are enabled.
Merchant rejects the card type or countryContact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the merchant's stated requirement.
Wrong card details errorRe-enter the number, expiry and CVV carefully, and match the billing address to your account.
Repeated declines on one siteReach out to Coinepay support or our Telegram with the merchant name and time.

If a payment still will not go through, our team can check the transaction from their side. Avoid trying to bypass a merchant's regional restrictions or payment checks — stay within Malawi's foreign-exchange rules and the merchant's terms.

Sending money across borders too

Beyond card payments, Coinepay also offers global remittance if you need to send money abroad from Malawi or receive it. Transfers reach nearly every country and region, with payout by bank deposit, mobile wallets and cash pickup. The exchange rate and fees are shown clearly in the app before you confirm, and every transfer has status tracking. Transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations, and Coinepay may ask for documents such as the purpose or source of funds.

FAQ

Why is my Malawian bank card declined on foreign websites?

Some banks, such as First Capital Bank, require you to whitelist a card separately for online and international use. A Coinepay virtual card is designed for international online payments.

Do I need to verify my identity to get a Coinepay card?

Yes. You must register and complete identity verification (KYC) before using card services. Use your real identity and billing details, and have a government ID ready, such as your eight-character Malawi National ID number.

What can I pay for with a Coinepay virtual card?

Common uses include AI subscriptions, software and cloud tools, advertising accounts like Facebook, Google and TikTok, and international online shopping. Businesses can issue a separate card per ad account with its own spending limit.

How much does a Coinepay card cost and what are the limits?

Fees, funding options, supported currencies and limits can vary and are shown in the Coinepay app before you commit. Check the app or contact support for the details that apply to your account.
