Freecharge is an Indian payments app that stores money in the Freecharge Wallet, a prepaid account held in Indian rupees (INR). If you have family, friends or a supplier in India who uses Freecharge, you can send money to them from abroad with Coinepay's Global Remittance and have the funds delivered into their wallet or supported bank/UPI payout. This guide walks through the details you need, the steps in the Coinepay app, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Before you start: what Freecharge is and who can receive
Freecharge is used in India and operates in Indian rupees (INR). Under India's Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules, Freecharge classifies its transfer-eligible wallet as a Full KYC account (what RBI calls a Full-KYC Prepaid Payment Instrument, or PPI). Freecharge confirms that wallet-to-wallet transfers between account holders are available to Full KYC users. A Minimum KYC+ Freecharge Wallet cannot receive transfers from another person's wallet or bank account — it can only be used for merchant payments such as recharges and utility bills.
Because of this, before you send, confirm with your recipient that their Freecharge Wallet is Full KYC and active. Freecharge also notes that an inactive wallet's balance cannot be used until the account is reactivated, so an idle wallet may need attention before funds can be received or spent.
What you need from the recipient
Coinepay sends your transfer to a payout partner in India, so you need accurate recipient information. Ask your recipient for:
- The phone number registered to their Freecharge account, or their Freecharge account ID, exactly as it appears in their app.
- Their full name exactly as registered with Freecharge and on their government ID. Indian payout partners match the name against KYC records, so even a small spelling difference can cause a hold.
- Confirmation that their wallet is Full KYC and not a Minimum KYC+ account.
- If a bank or UPI payout is offered as the delivery method in your Coinepay app, the matching bank account number and IFSC code, or UPI ID, in the recipient's own name.
Double-check every character before you confirm. Transfers that reach a real account with mismatched details are much harder to recover than ones you catch beforehand.
Step by step: sending with Coinepay
You manage everything from the Coinepay app (iOS and Google Play) or the 24/7 self-service dashboard. If you are new, create your Coinepay account and complete identity verification (KYC) first — remittance is subject to verification before you can send.
- Start a new transfer and choose India as the destination country and INR as the payout currency.
- Select the payout method that matches how your recipient wants the money — a mobile wallet payout, bank account deposit or the other options shown for India. Pick the one linked to their Freecharge or bank details.
- Enter the recipient details: full name exactly as registered, registered phone number or account ID, and any bank/UPI fields the method requires.
- Enter the amount you want to send or the amount you want them to receive.
- Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay shows the rate, the fees and the estimated arrival time clearly on screen before you confirm, so you can see exactly what your recipient will get.
- Confirm the transfer. You may be asked to provide the purpose of the transfer or source of funds — this is part of standard compliance and keeps your transfer moving.
- Track the status in the app. Every Coinepay transfer has live status tracking from submitted to delivered.
How fast does it arrive?
Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method you chose and the destination country. The estimate shown in the app before you confirm is your best guide for that specific transfer. A first transfer to a new recipient, or one selected for a compliance review, can take longer.
How the recipient sees the money arrive
Once the payout completes, your recipient receives the funds in their chosen account — credited to their Freecharge Wallet balance, or to their bank account or UPI, depending on the payout method. They will usually see a notification and an updated balance. In Freecharge, balance appears in the Wallet section of the app or website. Remind them that Freecharge distinguishes spendable wallet balance from gift-instrument or cashback balance, and that a Full KYC wallet is needed to move money on to another person or to a bank.
Wallet limits and verification levels
Freecharge's limits follow RBI's PPI framework. In general terms:
- A Full KYC wallet can send and receive transfers; a Minimum KYC+ wallet cannot receive person-to-person transfers.
- RBI caps the outstanding balance a Full-KYC PPI can hold, so a large incoming amount may be refused if it would push the recipient's balance over their ceiling.
- RBI also sets monthly transfer ceilings; the exact limit Freecharge applies to any individual wallet can be lower and is set by the issuer.
Coinepay does not set Freecharge's limits. If a payout is rejected because the recipient's wallet is full or at its cap, ask them to spend down or withdraw some balance, or use a bank payout instead. Coinepay always shows the rate, fees and amount before you confirm; it never states Freecharge's internal limits for you.
Troubleshooting
Wrong phone number or account ID
If you entered the wrong number and the transfer has not completed, contact Coinepay support immediately so it can be stopped or recalled if still possible. Once funds reach a valid account, recovery depends on the payout partner and the recipient's cooperation.
Name mismatch
Indian payout partners match the recipient name to KYC records. If the name doesn't match, the payout may be held or returned. Confirm the exact registered spelling and resubmit with the corrected details.
Wallet limit reached
If the recipient's Full KYC wallet is at its balance ceiling or monthly limit, the credit can fail. Ask them to reduce their balance or choose a bank/UPI payout, then try again.
Unverified or Minimum KYC+ wallet
A Minimum KYC+ wallet cannot receive person-to-person transfers. Ask your recipient to upgrade to Full KYC in the Freecharge app, or use a bank account payout in their name.
Inactive wallet
Freecharge says an inactive wallet's balance can't be used until reactivation. Ask the recipient to reactivate their wallet before you resend.
Compliance review
All Coinepay transfers are screened against sanctions lists and may be subject to local regulation. If your transfer is paused, respond promptly to any request for documents such as the purpose or source of funds. Don't split a transfer into smaller amounts or route it through a third party to avoid checks — that can cause longer delays.
Freecharge-side problems
If the money arrived but the recipient has a wallet issue, Freecharge directs users to Profile → Help & Support in its app, or [email protected] for payment complaints, with a published resolution period of up to 10 business days after a ticket is generated.

FAQ
Can I send money to any Freecharge wallet from abroad?
You can send to a recipient whose Freecharge Wallet is Full KYC and active. A Minimum KYC+ wallet cannot receive person-to-person transfers, so confirm your recipient's KYC level first, or use a bank or UPI payout in their name.
What details do I need from my Freecharge recipient?
You need their full name exactly as registered with Freecharge and on their ID, plus the phone number or account ID registered to their Freecharge account. For a bank or UPI payout you also need the matching account number and IFSC or UPI ID in their name.
How long does a transfer to Freecharge take?
Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual time depends on the payout method and destination. Coinepay shows the estimated arrival time before you confirm, and you can track the status live in the app.
What are the fees and exchange rate?
Coinepay shows the exchange rate and all fees clearly on screen before you confirm the transfer, so you see exactly what your recipient receives. Freecharge's own wallet-to-wallet terms are set by Freecharge and RBI.
What if I sent to the wrong number or the name doesn't match?
Contact Coinepay support immediately so the transfer can be stopped or recalled if it hasn't completed. Name mismatches are matched against KYC records in India and may be held or returned; confirm the exact registered name and resubmit.
