You can try using a Coinepay virtual card to buy a Medium Membership through Medium’s web checkout. The key is to choose the right plan, enter your real billing details, and check that the card can be used for a recurring charge. This guide covers the web payment flow and what to do if checkout does not go through.
What you need before you start
- A Medium account. Sign in to the account that should receive the membership, or create one during sign-up. Check the account before paying, especially if you use more than one email address to sign in.
- A Coinepay virtual card. You must register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Once issued, the virtual card provides a card number, expiry date and CVV. You can manage it in the Coinepay dashboard or mobile app.
- Enough available funds. Check the amount shown at Medium checkout, including any applicable taxes. Medium says its payment processor may also place a temporary US$1 authorization to verify a card; that authorization is not a membership charge.
- Your real billing information. Use your own name and accurate billing address if checkout requests them. Do not change your location or enter an invented address to try to pass a payment check.
Medium notes that some credit and debit cards cannot initiate recurring membership charges. A virtual card’s availability does not establish that Medium will accept it for a subscription. If you need to confirm whether your Coinepay card meets a checkout requirement, contact Coinepay support before buying.
Choose a Medium plan and billing period
Medium’s two recurring tiers are Medium Member and Friend of Medium. Both offer monthly and annual billing. Review the benefits on Medium’s official plans page rather than choosing by price alone: the tier and billing period you select determine the charge you authorize and the schedule for future charges.
At the time of writing (October 2026), Medium’s help center listed US web prices of US$5 per month or US$50 per year for Medium Member, and US$15 per month or US$150 per year for Friend of Medium. These are reference prices, not a quote for your account. Prices vary by region; check Medium’s official plans page and the amount displayed at your checkout before confirming. App-store prices are separate from web prices and should not be assumed to match them.
Medium also describes an academic discount for eligible school-email holders, redeemed at web checkout. If you intend to use it, check eligibility and the final checkout amount before submitting payment. Do not assume an advertised promotion applies to your account until Medium shows it in checkout.
Pay on Medium’s website with your Coinepay card
- Open Medium’s membership page. Go to medium.com/membership in your browser and sign in to the Medium account you want to upgrade.
- Start the upgrade. Select Upgrade or Get Started, then choose Medium Member or Friend of Medium and the monthly or annual billing option.
- Select the card payment option. Medium’s web sign-up guidance describes paying by card or using PayPal Checkout. To enter your Coinepay virtual card directly, use the card option presented at checkout, rather than PayPal Checkout. Available payment options can differ by checkout.
- Enter the card details. Copy the card number, expiry date and CVV from your Coinepay dashboard or app. If Medium asks for a name or billing address, enter your genuine details accurately. Review the plan, amount and renewal terms displayed by Medium.
- Submit and finish any required verification. Select Start my membership when you are ready. If a card-security challenge appears, follow its on-screen instructions. Do not repeatedly resubmit while a verification step is pending.
- Confirm the result. Check whether Medium shows an active membership on the intended account. For a web purchase, you can find billing records under profile picture → Settings → Membership and payment → Membership billing history. If the result is unclear, check there before attempting another payment.
Card issuance and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions. Some services are not available in every jurisdiction. Your ability to complete a Medium purchase depends on the checks and payment options presented for your transaction; having card details ready is not a promise that checkout will succeed.
Web checkout versus an in-app subscription
If you subscribe inside the Medium app, the route is profile picture → Settings → Become a member. You then choose a plan and confirm the purchase through the platform’s checkout: Apple handles iOS purchases, while Google Play handles Android purchases. Entering a Coinepay card on Medium’s web form is a different payment route from buying through an app store.
Choose the route you want before paying. If you buy through Apple or Google Play, payment-method changes and subscription cancellation are handled through that store’s settings. For a direct web purchase, Medium provides Settings → Membership and payment → Update payment method. PayPal payment details are managed with PayPal. If you are unsure which provider billed you, check your receipt and Medium’s membership settings rather than starting a second subscription.
Why was the card declined?
A decline does not, by itself, identify the cause. Work through the checks below, then ask the relevant support team for help if the payment still fails. Avoid making repeated attempts with altered personal or billing details.
Insufficient available balance
Compare the funds available on your Coinepay card with the final amount shown by Medium, not just an advertised plan price. Consider any taxes or currency differences displayed at checkout, and allow for a possible temporary US$1 verification authorization. Check the card’s current balance and any applicable controls in Coinepay before trying again. For card-specific funding questions, contact Coinepay support.
Billing details do not match
Recheck the card number, expiry and CVV for typing errors. Enter your real name and billing address where requested, and make sure the information is consistent with your legitimate card and account records. If you cannot identify which detail needs correcting, seek support rather than trying made-up addresses or switching countries in the form.
A security challenge was not completed
Some card payments require an additional authentication step, often called 3-D Secure. If a challenge appears, complete it using the instructions supplied during checkout. If it expires, fails to load or cannot be completed, check your Coinepay app for relevant information and contact Coinepay support. Do not assume every Medium checkout will display the same verification screen.
Recurring-charge or regional checks
Medium identifies geographical banking restrictions on recurring card charges as a possible reason sign-up fails. It also says some cards cannot initiate a recurring membership charge. Check whether your transaction is eligible under the card’s applicable settings and rules, and ask Coinepay support to help assess a card-side decline. Medium can help with a Medium-account or checkout issue. Do not try to bypass a regional rule with false information.
If recurring card payments remain unavailable to you, Medium documents a different option: buying a one-time annual gift membership and sending it to yourself. Redeeming its gift code does not require linking a card and the gift does not auto-renew. Check the current gift terms and payment options on Medium before buying; this is an alternative purchase, not a way to make a declined recurring charge succeed.
The error happened in the iOS app
Medium documents the iOS message “Error completing purchase” and advises checking that in-app purchases are enabled. It also documents “Error restoring purchase” when an Apple purchase belongs to a different Medium account. Those messages relate to Apple’s purchase flow, so first verify your Apple subscription and the Medium account involved. They do not necessarily indicate a problem with a card entered on Medium’s website.
Manage renewal, invoices or cancellation
For a web-billed membership, open profile picture → Settings → Membership and payment. Use Membership billing history to review invoices and Update payment method if you need to change the card. To stop future web renewals, select Cancel your membership. An Apple- or Google-billed subscription must be canceled in that store’s subscription settings; uninstalling Medium does not cancel it.
Medium says cancellation takes effect at the next billing period and access continues until then. Its terms say paid subscription fees are generally nonrefundable and unused days are not credited, unless Medium determines otherwise. Review the terms and billing date before you confirm a plan, particularly if you choose annual billing.
