Alibaba Cloud Model Studio is Alibaba's platform for calling large language and multimodal models, either pay-as-you-go or through a subscription such as the Token Plan or Coding Plan. This guide explains what you need before you pay, how the sign-up and checkout flow works, and how to troubleshoot a declined card. It also flags an important eligibility rule that affects virtual cards specifically, so you can check before you spend time at checkout.
Read this first: Model Studio's card rules
Alibaba Cloud's own payment-method guide is explicit that its checkout excludes prepaid, virtual and gift cards, as well as credit cards issued in mainland China. A separate Payment FAQ lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express or JCB as accepted networks and says UnionPay-only cards are unsupported, while the contracting-entity table published on 28 September lists a broader set of networks (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, UnionPay, JCB, Discover and Diners Club) depending on the account's contracting entity. Which rule governs a specific checkout is not something you can assume in advance.
Because Model Studio states that virtual cards are excluded, do not assume a Coinepay virtual card will be accepted. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets Alibaba Cloud's requirement before you buy, and check the live payment screen in your Alibaba Cloud account, which shows the methods actually available to your contracting entity. If a card is not eligible, Alibaba Cloud also lists non-card options for some entities, including Alipay CN, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay, so you may have an alternative route depending on your account.
What you need before you start
- A verified Coinepay account. If you have not registered yet, create your account and complete identity verification (KYC) first. You can manage everything from the iOS app or Android app.
- A Coinepay virtual card issued in your dashboard, with its card number, expiry date and CVV visible.
- Your real billing address and real name, matching your card details exactly.
- An Alibaba Cloud account registered outside mainland China (the international site does not permit a mainland-China registration region or mobile number).
- Enough balance on your card to cover the plan price and the roughly $1 pre-authorization Alibaba Cloud uses to validate a bank card.
Step 1: Create and complete your Alibaba Cloud account
Register an Alibaba Cloud account, verify your contact details, then finish sign-up by adding a mobile number, a payment method and a billing address. Completing account information is required to buy paid resources outside mainland China or to activate most free trials. Since September, completing your account information is required before you can activate the free quota as well.
Step 2: Activate Model Studio
Sign in to the Model Studio console, accept the service agreement and confirm activation. To make model calls you also need to activate the inference service and create an API key. Eligible new activations receive model-specific free quota valid for 90 days, but only for eligible International-scope models in Singapore; after that, usage becomes pay-as-you-go unless you enable Free Quota Only.
Step 3: Add your payment method
Go to Expenses and Costs → Billing Account → Bind Third-party Payment Method → Add Payment Method (older consoles label this Payment Methods). Add your card, let Alibaba Cloud run its pre-authorization and complete any 3-D Secure step your issuer requires. Set a working method as your Preferred External Payment Method. This is the moment where the virtual-card exclusion typically bites, so confirm acceptance here before relying on the card for a subscription.
Step 4: Choose and buy your plan
Model inference is pay-as-you-go by default and does not require a subscription. If you want a subscription, the main options are:
- Token Plan — Personal Edition. At the time of writing (October 2026), published tiers are Lite, Essential, Standard and Pro, with an optional Extra Bundle add-on that requires an active plan. Select Singapore in Model Studio, open the Personal purchase page, choose a tier and subscription period, and complete the order.
- Token Plan — Team Edition. Priced per seat per month, with a shared quota pack option. Purchase works the same way under the Singapore region.
- Coding Plan. The Pro tier is published at $50/month subject to limited daily-restocked purchase slots; the Lite tier is no longer open to new orders or renewals. Token Plan and Coding Plan are separate subscriptions.
- Savings plans. The AI General-purpose Savings Plan is a monthly spend commitment (published terms start at $150/month for 3, 6, 12 or 24 months), not a flat-rate subscription, and model-specific savings plans come in fixed denominations.
Prices are published in USD on the international pages, including for Singapore-region Token Plans; whether checkout shows GBP, EUR, SGD or another currency varies and is not confirmed. Always check the official Model Studio pricing and Token Plan pages for current figures and promotions, since prices and available tiers change.
After a Token Plan purchase, get the plan-specific API key under Token Plan → My Subscriptions. For the Coding Plan, use its plan-specific key; calling with an ordinary pay-as-you-go key can generate separate usage charges.
Step 5: Keep track of bills and renewals
View Model Studio charges under Expenses and Costs / Billing Details. Manage auto-renewal where each plan lives: the Coding Plan page for the Coding Plan, the console subscription management for Token Plan Personal, and Billing Management → Renewal Management for Token Plan Team. Keep enough balance on your card for the next cycle if auto-renewal is on.
Troubleshooting a declined card
Alibaba Cloud's Payment FAQ documents these common causes. The exact wording shown at Model Studio checkout is not a fixed set of messages, so match the symptom rather than a specific string:
- Unsupported card type. Prepaid, virtual and gift cards are excluded, as are mainland-China-issued credit cards. Check the account's payment screen for the networks allowed for your contracting entity, and contact Coinepay support to confirm eligibility.
- Insufficient balance or blocked pre-authorization. Ensure your card can cover the purchase plus the ~$1 pre-authorization. Top up in the Coinepay app if needed and retry.
- Billing address mismatch. Use the exact name and address linked to your card. A mismatch between your Alibaba Cloud billing address and your card details is a frequent decline cause.
- Incomplete 3-D Secure. If your issuer requires 3-D Secure, complete the verification prompt fully before the session times out.
- Merchant region or entity checks. Accepted methods depend on your account's contracting entity, not just the service region you selected. Token Plan use is Singapore-region only.
- Card already bound elsewhere, issuer risk controls, or KYC gaps. A card bound to another account, issuer restrictions on international or online transactions, or required identity documents can all block a charge.
Cancellation and refunds
Policies differ by plan. The Coding Plan runs to the end of its monthly period with no mid-term cancellation or refund. Token Plan Personal Edition currently does not support unsubscription, and unused Extra Bundle Credits expire after one month without refund. For Token Plan Team Edition, a seat can be unsubscribed only if it has no usage, with any refund going to the original payment account in an estimated 1–3 business days. Ordinary pay-as-you-go usage after a trial or quota ends is not refundable. If you want to stop charges, disable auto-renewal, stop inference calls and delete unused API keys.

FAQ
Does Alibaba Cloud Model Studio accept virtual cards?
Alibaba Cloud's payment-method guide states that prepaid, virtual and gift cards are excluded, along with mainland-China-issued credit cards. Check your account's live payment screen for the methods allowed to your contracting entity, and contact Coinepay support to confirm your card meets the requirement before you buy.
Which card networks does Model Studio list as accepted?
The sources differ. A Payment FAQ lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express or JCB and says UnionPay-only cards are unsupported, while the September contracting-entity table lists a broader set including UnionPay, Discover and Diners Club depending on the entity. Which rule applies to your checkout is not confirmed in advance, so verify on your own payment screen.
Do I need a subscription to use Model Studio?
No. Model inference is pay-as-you-go by default and priced by model, region and usage. Subscriptions such as the Token Plan (Personal or Team) and the Coding Plan are optional and purchased separately. Token Plan purchases require selecting the Singapore region.
Why was my card declined at checkout?
Common documented causes include an unsupported card type, insufficient balance or a blocked ~$1 pre-authorization, a billing address mismatch, incomplete 3-D Secure, a card already bound to another account, issuer risk controls, or required identity documents. Match the symptom and correct it, then retry.
Can I get a refund if I cancel a Model Studio plan?
It depends on the plan. The Coding Plan has no mid-term refund, Token Plan Personal currently cannot be unsubscribed, and a Token Plan Team seat can only be unsubscribed if it has no usage. Pay-as-you-go usage after a trial ends is not refundable. Disable auto-renewal to avoid future charges.
