T-Kash is the mobile-money service operated by Telkom Kenya, used in Kenya and denominated in Kenyan shillings (KSh). If you have family, friends or a supplier in Kenya who uses a T-Kash wallet, you can send money to them from abroad with Coinepay Global Remittance and have the funds credited straight to their registered mobile number. This guide explains what you need from the recipient, how the transfer works step by step, and what to do if something goes wrong.
Before you start
To use Coinepay for a cross-border transfer you need to register and complete identity verification (KYC). You can do this in the Coinepay mobile app on iOS or Google Play, or from the web dashboard. If you don't have an account yet, create one here.
All transfers are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay may ask you for extra information, such as the purpose of the transfer or the source of your funds, before a payout is released. Providing accurate details up front helps your transfer move smoothly.
What T-Kash is and where it works
T-Kash is a Kenyan mobile wallet. Payouts you send to it are delivered in Kenyan shillings to a wallet linked to a Kenyan mobile number. To hold a T-Kash account the recipient must be at least 18 and must have registered with a valid government-issued ID, such as a Kenyan national ID, a valid passport or an alien ID. In practice this means your recipient should already have an active, registered T-Kash wallet before you send.
Details you need from the recipient
Collect these details from the person you are paying and enter them exactly as given:
- The registered T-Kash mobile number (or wallet account ID, if Coinepay asks for one). This is the Kenyan number the wallet is registered under.
- The recipient's full name exactly as it appears on their T-Kash registration. The name on the payout must match the name on the wallet.
Double-check the phone number digit by digit. A single wrong digit can send money to the wrong person, and mobile-money transfers are difficult to reverse once completed. If you are unsure whether to enter the number in local Kenyan format or international +254 format, follow the format the Coinepay app shows for Kenya on the recipient screen.
Step by step: send to T-Kash with Coinepay
- Open Coinepay and start a transfer. Go to Global Remittance in the app or dashboard and choose Send money.
- Choose the destination. Select Kenya as the destination country and Kenyan shilling as the payout currency.
- Select the T-Kash payout method. From the available local payout options for Kenya, choose the mobile wallet payout for T-Kash.
- Enter the recipient's details. Type the registered mobile number and the full name exactly as registered. Enter the amount you want to send or the amount you want the recipient to receive, as prompted.
- Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay shows the exchange rate, the fees and the estimated arrival time clearly before you confirm. Check the recipient name, number and the final amount they will receive.
- Confirm and pay. Approve the transfer. If Coinepay requests supporting information (for example, purpose or source of funds), supply it so the payout is not held.
- Track the transfer. Every transfer has a status you can follow in the app, from processing to paid out.
How fast does it arrive?
Transfers can arrive in as little as 10 minutes, but the actual delivery time depends on the payout method and the destination country. The estimated arrival time is shown in the app before you confirm, so you'll know what to expect for your specific transfer.
How the recipient receives the money
When the payout reaches T-Kash, the amount is credited to the recipient's wallet balance and T-Kash generates an SMS notification. The recipient can then use the balance, send to others or withdraw cash through T-Kash as usual. If they don't see a message straight away, a missing SMS by itself does not mean a transfer failed — a full SMS inbox, blocked T-Kash messages or platform delays can hold up the notification. Ask them to check their wallet balance directly.
Recipient wallet limits
T-Kash wallets have limits set under Kenyan regulations. At the time of writing, Telkom publishes a maximum of KSh 250,000 per transaction, a total daily transaction value of KSh 500,000, and a maximum wallet balance of KSh 500,000. These figures can change, so treat them as a guide and check Telkom's official T-Kash pages for the current limits. If a payout would push the recipient over their wallet balance or daily limit, it may not credit — have them withdraw or spend some balance first, or send a smaller amount.
Troubleshooting
Wrong number entered
If you sent to the wrong number, the recipient should contact Telkom T-Kash customer care (Telkom's FAQ directs customers to call 160) immediately to log a reversal claim. Telkom describes acting within a short window, but completed transactions are generally final and reversals are discretionary, so recovery is not guaranteed. On the Coinepay side, open a support ticket right away with your transaction reference via the support team so your case is on record.
Name mismatch
The payout name must match the name registered on the T-Kash wallet. If the names don't match, the transfer can be delayed or rejected. Confirm the exact registered name with your recipient and correct it in Coinepay before resubmitting.
Wallet limit reached
If the recipient has hit their daily transaction limit or their wallet balance ceiling, the credit can fail. Telkom lists reaching the daily limit and insufficient available room as reasons a request may not complete. Ask the recipient to free up balance or wait until the next day, then resend.
Unverified or restricted wallet
A wallet that is not fully registered, or one that is suspended or frozen, cannot receive funds normally. Telkom lists a suspended or frozen account among the reasons a request may not complete. The recipient should resolve their registration or account status with Telkom before you try again.
Compliance review
Because every transfer is screened against sanctions lists and checked against local regulations, Coinepay may pause a payout to review it or to request documents such as the purpose or source of funds. This is routine. Respond promptly with the information requested and the transfer can continue. Never split a transfer, route it through a third party or try to work around these checks.
Where Coinepay can and cannot send
Coinepay sends to every country and region except those under comprehensive sanctions, and supports bank deposit, mobile wallet and cash pickup payouts depending on the destination. Kenya and T-Kash are within the supported mobile-wallet network. Coinepay does not serve sanctioned persons or residents of jurisdictions under comprehensive sanctions.
