Coinepay Global Remittance lets you send cross-border transfers to Ghana, with the choice of paying out to a bank account, a mobile money wallet or cash pickup. This guide walks through what you need before you start, how to complete a transfer step by step, and how to handle problems if they come up. The rate and fees are always shown in the app before you confirm, so you can review the full cost in advance.

Before you start: what the sender needs

To send money to Ghana you need a Coinepay account with identity verification (KYC) completed. You can register at the Coinepay sign-up page and manage everything from the self-service dashboard or the mobile app for iOS and Android.

You will also need accurate details for your recipient. The exact fields depend on which payout method you pick, but in all cases you need the recipient's full legal name exactly as it appears on their official identification. Ghana's local currency is the Ghanaian cedi (GHS), and regulated remittances are paid out to the beneficiary in cedi.

Local payout methods for Ghana

When you set up the transfer, Coinepay shows the payout options available for Ghana. Choose the one that suits your recipient and collect the details below before you begin.

Bank account deposit

For a bank deposit you typically need the recipient's full name, their bank name, and their bank account number. Account numbers for Ghanaian bank routes commonly run to several digits (one major provider accepts 8–20 digits for its GHS route), so copy the number carefully and in full. For international routing, the receiving bank's SWIFT/BIC code may be requested; confirm the exact BIC directly with the recipient's bank. Depending on the route, a branch or clearing-house sort code may also be needed, as Ghana's interbank operator publishes sort codes by bank and branch.

Important: Ghana has no national IBAN format, so do not invent or substitute an IBAN for the account number. Likewise, identifiers such as IFSC, CLABE or a US-style routing number are not used for Ghanaian receiving banks. If a form asks for one of those, you are likely on the wrong route — Ghana bank payouts rely on the account number plus SWIFT/BIC.

One policy point to be aware of: Bank of Ghana's rules for international money transfer operators restrict terminating inward remittances into business or corporate accounts. If you intend to pay into a business account, confirm eligibility first. Contact Coinepay support to check whether your intended payout is supported before you send.

Mobile money wallets

Mobile money is widely used in Ghana. For a wallet payout you generally need the recipient's registered mobile number and the wallet provider. The main local options on Ghanaian routes are MTN, AirtelTigo and Telecel. Make sure the phone number is active, registered in the recipient's own name, and able to receive mobile money, so funds land in the correct wallet.

Cash pickup

With cash pickup, your recipient collects the funds over the counter at an authorised payout location. They will need to bring valid government-issued identification and the transfer reference (for example, a control number) you share with them. Give the recipient their full name exactly as entered, and pass along the reference securely once the transfer is confirmed.

Choosing a method at a glance

Payout methodWhat the recipient needs
Bank depositFull legal name, bank name, account number; SWIFT/BIC and possibly a branch/sort code
Mobile money (MTN, AirtelTigo, Telecel)Full legal name and registered mobile number
Cash pickupFull legal name matching their ID, valid government ID, and the transfer reference

Step by step: sending the transfer

  1. Sign in and start a transfer. Open the Coinepay app or dashboard and choose to send a new remittance.
  2. Choose Ghana as the destination and select the currency. Pick GHS payout and the payout method (bank, mobile money or cash pickup).
  3. Enter the recipient's details. Add the full legal name and the fields for your chosen method. Double-check every digit of the account or phone number.
  4. Review the exchange rate and fees. Coinepay displays the rate and the fees clearly before you confirm, along with the amount your recipient is expected to receive. Review this carefully.
  5. Confirm the transfer. Once you are satisfied, confirm to submit it for processing.
  6. Track the status. Every transfer has status tracking in the app, so you can follow it from submitted through to paid out. Share the reference with your recipient if you chose cash pickup.

Compliance and verification

Transfers to Ghana are subject to identity verification, sanctions screening and local regulations. Coinepay screens customers and counterparties against sanctions lists, and may ask for supporting documents such as the purpose of the transfer or the source of funds. Providing this promptly helps your transfer move forward.

On the recipient's side, Ghana has tightened identification rules: a Bank of Ghana notice effective 1 December 2025 designates the Ghana Card as the identification document for financial transactions and requires identification and verification for third-party transactions. Make sure your recipient's name matches their Ghana Card and that they can present valid ID when collecting or receiving funds.

Always use your own real identity and your recipient's real details. Never split a transfer, route it through a third party, or try to work around checks or reporting.

Troubleshooting

Wrong recipient details

A typo in the recipient's name or account number can cause the receiving bank to reject and return the payment. If you notice an error before the transfer is paid out, contact support immediately. After payout, corrections may not be possible. Always verify details with your recipient first.

Transfer under compliance review

If your transfer is held for review, it usually means additional verification or documents are needed. Respond to any request in the app so the review can be completed.

Delays

Several ordinary factors can slow a transfer: the time it takes to fund it, currency conversion or security checks, the receiving bank's own processing, and weekends or public holidays. Use the status tracker to see where your transfer is.

Returned transfers

If the receiving bank or wallet rejects the payment — for example because the name does not match or the account cannot receive the funds — the amount is typically returned. Check the details, correct them, and resend. If anything is unclear, reach out to Coinepay support.

Which mobile money wallets can I send to in Ghana?

The main local mobile money options are MTN, AirtelTigo and Telecel. For a wallet payout you generally need the recipient's full name and their registered mobile number. Make sure the number is active and in the recipient's own name.

How does cash pickup work in Ghana?

Your recipient collects the funds over the counter at an authorised location. They must bring valid government-issued identification and the transfer reference you share with them. Enter the recipient's name exactly as it appears on their ID.

How much does it cost and how long does it take?

Coinepay shows the exchange rate and fees clearly before you confirm, along with the expected payout amount. Timing varies with funding, conversion and security checks, the receiving bank's processing, and weekends or holidays. Check the app for the figures that apply to your transfer.

Can I send a remittance to a business account in Ghana?

Bank of Ghana's rules restrict terminating inward remittances into business or corporate accounts, so eligibility depends on the route. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your intended payout is supported before you send.
