Visual Studio Professional is Microsoft's paid developer subscription, and how you pay for it depends on which option you choose. This guide explains the two purchase paths, where your card is actually charged, and how to use a Coinepay virtual card at checkout. It also covers a crucial restriction: Microsoft's Azure-backed monthly billing does not accept virtual or prepaid cards, so plan path matters before you buy.
Know which Professional option you are buying
Microsoft sells Professional in a few different forms, and the payment flow is not the same for each. According to Microsoft's pricing and Store pages checked in October 2026:
- Professional standard — an annual-price subscription bought through the Microsoft Store, with separate New and Renewal configurations on the product page.
- Professional monthly — a per-user, per-month subscription billed through Azure via the Visual Studio Marketplace.
- Visual Studio Professional 2026 — a standalone, perpetual IDE licence (listed at US$499 in the notes) sold in the Store without subscription benefits. This is not a third subscription tier.
At the time of writing (October 2026), the US pricing page showed Professional standard around US$99.99 per user/month as an annual-price equivalent and Professional monthly at US$45 per user/month, while the US Microsoft Store listed the standard "Professional Subscription (New)" at US$1,199.00. Store prices in other markets differed (for example £1,378 in the UK, CAD $1,602 in Canada, AU$1,911 in Australia and €1,540 in Germany and France). Prices and taxes vary by region and change over time, so always confirm the current amount on Microsoft's official pricing and Store pages before you pay.
Which path works with a virtual card
This is the most important point for virtual-card users. Microsoft's documentation states that Azure does not accept virtual or prepaid cards. Because Professional monthly is billed through an Azure subscription, that path is generally not suitable for a virtual card.
The Microsoft Store checkout used for Professional standard is a different system: Microsoft says Store checkout accepts credit cards, debit cards, PayPal and other options where available (availability of individual methods varies by country and product). If you want to pay with a Coinepay card, the Store-based Professional standard purchase is the path to look at.
Card acceptance depends on the merchant and the market, and no third party can promise a specific card will be accepted. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card details before you buy, and check the Microsoft Store page in your country for the payment methods it offers.
What you need before you start
- A verified Coinepay account. Register at Coinepay and complete identity verification (KYC) before you can use card services.
- An active Coinepay virtual card with its card number, expiry date and CVV, which you can view in the Coinepay dashboard or the iOS or Android app.
- Enough available balance to cover the full charge plus any tax shown at checkout — Store subscriptions are billed as a single amount, which can be large.
- A Microsoft account (Store checkout can also use guest checkout) and your real billing name and address.
Step by step: buying Professional standard in the Microsoft Store
- Go to Microsoft's official Visual Studio pricing page and open the Professional standard option, or go directly to the Visual Studio Professional Subscription product page in the Microsoft Store for your country.
- Choose the correct configuration: New if you are buying for the first time, or Renewal if you already hold a subscription. Note that a subscription expired for 30 days or more is no longer eligible for renewal pricing.
- Add the item to your cart and review the order, including the currency and any tax.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account or continue with guest checkout.
- Choose an available payment method and enter your Coinepay card number, expiry date, CVV, and the billing name and address exactly as they appear on your Coinepay account.
- Complete any 3-D Secure confirmation your card requires, then place the order.
- Activate your subscription from the payment-confirmation page or the confirmation email, following Microsoft's activation steps.
If you are a business buyer in the UK, Germany or France, be aware that Microsoft warns an online individual Store purchase produces a simplified invoice that may lack the business or VAT details you need; those Store pages direct buyers who need full details to order by phone.
If you are setting up Professional monthly (Azure)
For completeness: Professional monthly is purchased by signing in to Visual Studio Marketplace → Subscriptions, selecting the monthly subscription, choosing or creating an eligible Azure billing subscription, setting the number of seats, completing the purchase and assigning users. Purchasing requires Contributor access or higher on the Azure subscription. Azure Free Trial subscriptions and Azure subscriptions provided as Visual Studio subscriber benefits cannot be used as the billing subscription, and monthly Marketplace purchases cannot be paid by purchase order. Because this billing runs through Azure, and Azure does not accept virtual or prepaid cards, a Coinepay virtual card is not the right tool for this path.
Troubleshooting a declined card
If your payment is declined, work through the common causes Microsoft documents for Store and Azure billing:
- Insufficient balance or credit: confirm your Coinepay card has enough available funds for the full charge plus tax. Store subscriptions are billed as one amount, which may be substantial.
- Billing address or name mismatch: the name, address and CVV you enter must match your card record exactly. Copy them from the Coinepay app rather than typing from memory.
- 3-D Secure not completed: if an extra verification step appears, finish it in the Coinepay app or via the notification before the session times out.
- Merchant or region checks: Store offers and accepted payment instruments vary by market, and Azure card-brand acceptance is country-specific. Make sure your billing country matches the Store or billing-account region you are buying in.
- Virtual or prepaid card not supported: Azure explicitly does not accept virtual or prepaid cards. If you were attempting the monthly/Azure path, switch to the Store-based standard purchase or use a different accepted method.
- Card inactive, blocked or international transactions disabled: check in the Coinepay dashboard that your card is active and not frozen.
- Bank-blocked or organizational restriction: a work account may have purchase restrictions set by an administrator.
Note: a product-key claim issue reported online as message code "715-123150" is a post-purchase access problem, not a card-decline error, and its cause is unconfirmed. If your card is charged but you cannot activate, that is a Microsoft support matter rather than a payment fault.
If the charge still fails and your Coinepay card is active with sufficient balance, contact Coinepay support to check whether the transaction reached the card, or reach the team on Telegram. For the merchant side, use Microsoft's official support.
Managing, renewing and cancelling
For a Store retail subscription, manage it in your Microsoft account → Services & subscriptions → Visual Studio subscription → Manage, where you can also update Store payment options, and cancel via Manage → Cancel subscription. Volume-licence customers must work with their reseller instead. Microsoft states that digital goods, including subscriptions, are generally non-refundable unless the offer or applicable law provides otherwise, so review the specific subscription's terms before buying. If you keep your subscription auto-renewing, make sure the Coinepay card on file stays active and funded ahead of the renewal date.

FAQ
Can I pay for Visual Studio Professional monthly with a Coinepay virtual card?
Professional monthly is billed through Azure, and Microsoft's documentation says Azure does not accept virtual or prepaid cards. For a virtual card, look instead at the Store-based Professional standard subscription, which uses Microsoft Store checkout. Contact Coinepay support to confirm your card details before buying.
Where do I enter my Coinepay card details when buying Professional standard?
On the Visual Studio Professional Subscription product page in the Microsoft Store, choose New or Renewal, add it to the cart, review the order, then at checkout select a card payment method and enter your Coinepay card number, expiry, CVV and matching billing name and address.
How much does Visual Studio Professional cost?
Prices vary by region and change over time. At the time of writing (October 2026) the US Store listed Professional Subscription (New) at US$1,199.00 and the pricing page showed Professional monthly at US$45 per user/month. Always confirm the current amount on Microsoft's official pricing and Store pages.
My card was declined at checkout. What should I check?
Confirm sufficient balance for the full charge plus tax, that your name, address and CVV match your card exactly, that you completed any 3-D Secure step, and that your card is active. Azure-billed purchases also reject virtual and prepaid cards. If the card is active and funded but still fails, contact Coinepay support.
Can I get a refund after buying through the Microsoft Store?
Microsoft says digital goods, including subscriptions, are generally non-refundable unless the offer or applicable law provides otherwise, and eligibility depends on the specific subscription's terms. Review those terms before purchasing and contact Microsoft support for refund questions.
