The xAI Grok API is billed separately from any Grok consumer subscription: you fund it with prepaid credits (or monthly invoiced billing, if enabled) through the developer console at console.x.ai. This guide walks through what you need, how to buy credits with a Coinepay virtual card, and how to work through the most common card-declined causes. It is a general payment walkthrough, not an official xAI or affiliated resource.

What you need before you start

Getting the checkout right the first time is mostly about preparation. Have the following ready:

  • A verified Coinepay account. You must register and complete identity verification (KYC) before your card can be used. If you have not done this yet, create your account and finish verification in the iOS or Android app.
  • A Coinepay virtual card with funds on it. Once issued, you get the card number, expiry date and CVV instantly in your dashboard. Add enough balance to cover the credits you plan to buy plus any tax the merchant adds.
  • Your real billing details. Use the name and billing address that match your Coinepay account. Billing-address mismatches are a frequent cause of declines.
  • An xAI Console account. You will create this at console.x.ai in the next step.

A note on acceptance: an independent onboarding walkthrough reports Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover logos plus Cash App Pay at the US API checkout, but xAI does not publish a guaranteed list of accepted cards for every account or country. Whether any specific card works at checkout is never guaranteed. If you want to confirm your card is suitable before you buy, contact Coinepay support.

Step 1: Create your xAI Console account

Go to console.x.ai and sign up. You can register with email or choose X sign-in, which links your X account. This developer console is where API billing lives — it is distinct from the Grok app subscription, which xAI bills on its own. After signing in, you will land in the console where teams, billing and API keys are managed.

Step 2: Choose your team and open billing

API usage draws down a specific team's balance, so first select the team you intend to use. Then open Billing. Within the console billing area you will find:

  • Billing → Billing details → Add Payment Information to save a card.
  • Billing → Payment for your billing address and tax details.
  • Billing → API spend management to buy prepaid credits.
  • Billing → Invoices for your invoice history.

Note that xAI says the last saved payment method currently cannot be removed, so add the card you actually intend to keep on file.

Step 3: Enter your Coinepay card details

Under Add Payment Information, type the card number, expiry date and CVV from your Coinepay dashboard. Then open Billing → Payment and enter the billing address exactly as it appears on your Coinepay account. Matching country, postal code and address lines helps the issuer's automated checks approve the charge.

India-specific note: xAI states that Indian-issued cards cannot be saved for later charges. In that case, buy prepaid API credits using Guest Checkout rather than saving the card. Model and payment availability can also vary by geography and account.

Step 4: Buy prepaid credits

Open Billing → API spend management and purchase credits for the selected team. xAI's two official billing options are Prepaid credits and Monthly invoiced billing; monthly invoicing is disabled by default and must be requested, so most new users start with prepaid credits. xAI documents card purchases and bank transfer for prepaid credits — bank-transfer credits typically arrive after 2–3 business days of processing, while card purchases are immediate.

An independent walkthrough mentions onboarding tiles labelled "Explore," "Prototype" and "Build" with initial credit amounts, but xAI's public billing documentation does not confirm those as official plan names or require a fixed first purchase. Confirm the current amounts and any minimums in the console itself.

Step 5: Complete verification and confirm

If the payment triggers 3-D Secure, you will be redirected to an authentication step. Approve it through the method tied to your Coinepay card — check your Coinepay app for a prompt or one-time code. After authentication succeeds, the credits are added to your team's balance and the charge appears on your Coinepay statement.

Understand what you are paying for

xAI publishes its API rates in USD and charges by token usage, not a flat monthly subscription. For example, at the time of writing (October 2026) the published rate for grok-4.7 is $2 input / $0.50 cached input / $6 output per million tokens below 200,000 prompt tokens, with higher rates above that threshold; grok-4.3 is listed at $1.25 / $0.20 / $2.50 per million short-context tokens. Image, video, voice, tools and storage have separate rates. Local-currency totals and taxes are not separately published, so always check the official xAI pricing page for current figures before you buy.

The spend-based rate-limit tiers (Tier 0 through Tier 4 and Enterprise) reflect cumulative spend, not monthly prices. Your prepaid balance is simply drawn down as you make API calls.

Set up auto top-up (optional)

To avoid interruptions, you can enable auto top-up, which buys more credits when your balance falls below a threshold you choose, with a minimum $5 top-up and a configurable monthly maximum. Only enable this if you are comfortable with recurring charges to your Coinepay card, and keep enough balance on the card to cover them.

Troubleshooting a declined card

The independent checkout walkthrough reports a generic "Card declined" message; the issuer's exact reason in any single case is not visible there. Work through these common causes:

  • Insufficient balance. Make sure your Coinepay card holds enough to cover the credit purchase plus any tax added at checkout. Top up in the Coinepay app and retry.
  • Billing address mismatch. Re-check Billing → Payment so the address, postal code and country match your Coinepay account exactly.
  • 3-D Secure not completed. If the authentication prompt timed out or was missed, start the purchase again and approve it promptly in your Coinepay app.
  • Merchant region checks. Payment and model availability can vary by geography and account; xAI points teams to the Console Models page for what is available. Use your real location and details — never try to disguise your region.
  • Card type restrictions. If a save-card step fails (for example the Indian-card limitation above), use Guest Checkout where offered. To confirm your Coinepay card meets a specific requirement, contact Coinepay support before retrying repeatedly.

Do not confuse billing errors with API errors. xAI documents rejected API requests when prepaid credits run out under the default $0 invoiced-billing limit, and HTTP 429 when you exceed rate limits. Neither means your card was declined — top up credits or wait out the rate limit as appropriate.

Stopping charges and refunds

Prepaid credits are a one-time purchase, not a recurring subscription to cancel. To stop automatic purchases, disable auto top-up in billing settings. xAI states that purchased API credits are generally non-refundable except where regional law requires otherwise, so buy in amounts that match your expected usage. Enterprise contracts have their own renewal and refund terms that do not apply to self-service prepaid credits.

Need help?

For card, balance or verification questions, reach the Coinepay team through support or Telegram. For plan details, pricing and billing policy, rely on xAI's own console and documentation, which may change over time.

FAQ

Is the Grok API billed the same as a Grok app subscription?

No. xAI states that the API (billed at console.x.ai) and any Grok consumer subscription have separate billing. This guide covers buying prepaid API credits in the developer console.

Will my Coinepay virtual card definitely work at xAI checkout?

Acceptance is never guaranteed for any card. xAI does not publish a guaranteed accepted-card list for every account or country. Make sure your card is funded and your billing address matches, and contact Coinepay support if you want to confirm suitability first.

How do I pay if I'm in India and can't save my card?

xAI says Indian-issued cards cannot be saved for later charges. In that case, buy prepaid API credits using Guest Checkout instead of saving the card.

What does Grok API cost?

xAI charges by token usage in USD, not a flat subscription. At the time of writing (October 2026), grok-4.7 is listed at $2 input / $0.50 cached / $6 output per million tokens under 200,000 prompt tokens. Check the official xAI pricing page for current rates.

Can I get a refund on unused credits?

xAI states that purchased API credits are generally non-refundable except where regional law requires otherwise. To stop future automatic charges, disable auto top-up in your console billing settings.
