You can use a Coinepay virtual card to attempt to add a payment method to Vultr and pay for cloud services. This guide covers what to prepare, how Vultr’s sign-up and billing flow works, and what to check if your card is declined. Vultr decides whether to accept any payment method, so confirm your account and card details before deploying a service.
What you need before you start
- A Coinepay account and virtual card: Register with Coinepay and complete identity verification before using card services. Your virtual card’s number, expiry date, and CVV are available through Coinepay. You can manage your account in the 24/7 dashboard or the iOS app or Android app.
- Enough available funds: Allow for the payment you choose, any temporary card authorization, and later Vultr charges. Check your available funds and applicable card details in Coinepay before proceeding.
- Your real account and billing information: Use an email address you can verify and enter accurate billing details. Do not substitute an address from a different region to try to pass a payment check.
- A deployment budget: Vultr charges for servers from deployment. Choose the product, data-centre location, and configuration you actually need, then review the current price in the Vultr Console.
Vultr lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and JCB among its accepted card networks. That list does not establish whether a particular Coinepay card will be accepted. If Vultr presents a card-eligibility requirement you are unsure about, contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets it before you buy.
Understand what Vultr will charge
Vultr offers Cloud Compute, Optimized Cloud Compute, VX1™ Cloud Compute, Cloud GPU, and Bare Metal. Within Shared CPU Cloud Compute, you may see Cloud Compute, High Frequency, and High Performance categories. Dedicated CPU options include VX1, General Purpose, CPU Optimized, Memory Optimized, and Storage Optimized. Availability depends on the location you select; Vultr says VX1 is offered only in select locations.
For a rough starting point, Vultr displayed Cloud Compute from $0.005/hour, Optimized Cloud Compute from $0.045/hour, and VX1 from $0.076/hour at the time of writing (October 2026). These are starting prices, not quotes for your chosen configuration or region. Check Vultr’s official pricing page and the Deploy Instance page for the current price at your selected location. Applicable VAT, sales tax, or consumption tax may be added at billing.
Vultr invoices in USD rather than local currency. If your funding involves another currency, your payment provider may handle conversion and may charge fees; check the relevant details in your Coinepay account. A server continues to accrue hourly charges while stopped. Destroying it stops its server charges. Vultr states a 672-hour monthly billing cap for non-GPU servers and 730 hours for GPU instances, but you should still review the terms and costs of every service you deploy.
Sign up for Vultr and add your Coinepay card
- Create your Vultr account. On Vultr’s official site, sign up with your email address and password, accept the terms, and complete email verification. The new account then opens the Billing page, where you can add a payment method before deploying a service.
- Open your Coinepay card details. In the Coinepay dashboard or app, find the virtual card you intend to use. Have its number, expiry date, and CVV ready. Check that you have sufficient available funds for any payment or temporary authorization.
- Enter the card and your real billing details. Follow the card-payment prompts on Vultr’s Billing page. Enter the details carefully and make sure the billing information reflects your genuine details. Review the selected payment option before submitting it.
- Choose an initial payment option deliberately. Vultr documents an “I just want to link my credit card – $0.00 deposit” option for linking a card without an initial deposit. A payment provider may still place a temporary authorization hold. Vultr says its other initial payment options require a small deposit; review the amount shown before confirming.
- Complete any verification prompt. If your payment flow asks for an additional authentication step, follow the instructions shown. Do not assume a submitted card is ready to use until Vultr confirms the billing setup.
- Deploy only after reviewing the price. On Vultr’s Deploy Instance page, check that your desired product and data-centre location are available. Confirm the displayed configuration and price before creating the instance. Adding a card and deploying a billable resource are separate decisions.
If you are choosing between products, remember that a quoted starting price does not cover every size or location. For example, a Cloud Compute Shared CPU selection and an Optimized Cloud Compute Dedicated CPU selection have different configurations. Check the Console rather than relying on a price from a different region or plan.
Make a payment or change your saved method
To pay an existing Vultr account balance or add funds through the Console, go to Account → BILLING → Make a Payment. Select the offered payment method, enter the amount, and follow the payment steps shown. Check the amount and confirmation before submitting; do not mistake a temporary authorization for a completed account payment.
Manage saved payment methods in Billing Settings. Vultr says a newly added saved method becomes the default. If you want to remove the existing default, first add another active method to replace it. Check which method is marked as default so future billing is not directed to a card you did not intend to use.
Vultr also lists other payment methods, including PayPal, Alipay, UnionPay, and digital currencies through BitPay. Its separately documented ACH and wire transfers typically take 3–5 business days to reach the account, so they are not immediate substitutes for a card payment. Use only a method available to and permitted for your account.
Troubleshoot a declined card
If Vultr declines the card, stop and identify the likely cause before retrying. A decline does not, by itself, tell you whether the issue is available funds, entered details, authentication, or a payment check. Vultr notes that an issuer may not provide a specific decline reason.
- Insufficient available funds: Check the Coinepay balance available for the card, not just the amount you expect Vultr to charge. Account for your selected deposit or payment amount and the possibility of a temporary authorization hold. If necessary, add funds using the options shown in Coinepay and retry after the available balance updates.
- Billing-address mismatch or entry error: Recheck the card number, expiry date, CVV, and billing fields for typos. Use your real billing details. If the details on your Vultr account need correction, update them through the appropriate account or billing settings rather than entering an invented address.
- Authentication or 3-D Secure prompt: If an additional card-verification step appears, complete it in the payment flow. If the prompt fails, expires, or never loads, start a fresh attempt without repeatedly submitting the same transaction. Contact Coinepay support if you need help determining why card authentication did not complete.
- Online, international, or recurring-payment block: Vultr identifies these transaction types, as well as possible high-risk merchant controls, as reasons a card may be declined. Check your card’s available settings in Coinepay or ask Coinepay support whether a restriction applies to the attempted charge.
- Merchant region or eligibility check: A data-centre’s availability does not determine whether a billing account or card is eligible. If Vultr flags your location, billing details, or payment method, follow its instructions and ask Vultr support what requirement applies. Contact Coinepay support to confirm whether your card meets a stated card requirement; do not change your location or identity details to bypass the check.
If the charge appears in Coinepay but the Vultr payment is not reflected in Billing, check whether it is a pending authorization or a completed transaction before trying again. Keep the date, amount, and any transaction reference for support, but do not send your full card number or CVV in a support message.
Keep your Vultr billing under control
Review active resources and invoices regularly, especially after testing a server. Stopping a server does not stop its server charges; destroy a server you no longer need. Vultr’s published refund policy says service charges are not refunded, payments are final, and credits are non-refundable. Raise a billing concern through a Vultr support ticket if something looks wrong.
If you want to close your Vultr account, first destroy active services and pay any outstanding balance. You can then use Vultr’s account-cancellation page in the Console or request closure through Vultr Support. Closure and the associated data deletion are irreversible, so save any data you need beforehand.

FAQ
Can I link a card to Vultr without making an initial deposit?
Vultr documents an “I just want to link my credit card – $0.00 deposit” option. A temporary authorization hold may still occur. Review the option shown in your account before confirming.
Where do I make a Vultr account payment?
In the Vultr Console, go to Account → BILLING → Make a Payment, then choose a method and amount and complete the prompts.
Why was my Coinepay card declined by Vultr?
Possible causes include insufficient available funds, incorrect billing details, an incomplete authentication prompt, or an online, international, recurring, or merchant eligibility check. Review the details and contact support if the cause remains unclear.
Will stopping a Vultr server stop its charges?
No. Vultr says server charges continue while it is stopped. Destroy a server you no longer need to stop its server charges.
