A Squarespace domain can be registered on its own, without a full website plan, and billed to a card you control. This guide walks through what you need, how the Squarespace checkout works for a domain, and how to pay with a Coinepay virtual card. It also covers the most common reasons a card is declined at a Squarespace checkout and what to do about each one.

What you need before you start

Squarespace sells domains to individuals and businesses, and the checkout asks for real registration contact details and a valid payment method. Before you buy, make sure you have:

  • A Squarespace account with the email address you can access (you may be asked to verify it after purchase).
  • Your real name, billing address and contact details for the domain registration record.
  • A Coinepay virtual card with its card number, expiry date and CVV, created in the Coinepay app or dashboard.
  • Enough available balance on the card to cover the domain's first-year price in full.

If you don't have a Coinepay account yet, register here and complete identity verification (KYC) first. Card and fund services are provided by licensed partner financial institutions, and services related to virtual assets are not available to residents of mainland China; some services are not available in every jurisdiction. You can create and manage cards from the iOS app or Android app.

Create and fund your Coinepay virtual card

In the Coinepay app or dashboard, issue a virtual card. You'll see the card number, expiry and CVV instantly, so there is no wait before you can enter them at checkout. Add enough balance to cover the registration fee, and keep a little extra in case a small authorization hold is placed during payment. Because the dashboard is available 24/7, you can top up or check the card right before you buy.

One practical tip: use the same name and billing address on your Coinepay card profile that you plan to enter at Squarespace. Mismatched billing details are a frequent cause of declines, which we cover below.

How much a Squarespace domain costs

Squarespace domains have no named subscription tiers; the price depends on the extension, whether the name is a premium name, and the registration term you choose. At the time of writing (October 2026), Squarespace's own domain FAQ gives examples for US pricing such as around $20 per year for an ordinary .com or .org, about $30 for .photography and about $50 for .media. These are examples, not a fixed price for every name, and prices vary by region. Always search your exact name on the Squarespace Domains site and review both the first-year price and the renewal price before you confirm.

The optional Squarespace website plans are named Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced, but you do not need any of them to register a domain. An eligible annual website plan includes one eligible domain free for its first year (a monthly plan does not), after which the domain renews at the standard rate.

Step-by-step: buy a Squarespace domain without a site

  1. Go to the Squarespace Domains site and search for the name you want.
  2. Select the available name (or names) and choose the registration term.
  3. Optionally add Google Workspace if you want email; you can skip it.
  4. Enter your registration contact details using your real information.
  5. Review the fees and the auto-renew date shown on the order summary.
  6. Enter your Coinepay virtual card number, expiry and CVV, and the matching billing address.
  7. Select Confirm and purchase.

A domain bought without a site uses a parking page until you connect it to a website. After purchase, if Squarespace asks you to verify the registration email, do it promptly: failing to verify within 15 days can suspend the domain.

Buying a domain for an existing site

If you already have an eligible trial or paid Squarespace site, open the Domains dashboard → Get a domain and follow the same search-and-checkout flow. Note that domains cannot be registered on the Mobile Start plan.

A note on accepted cards

For subscription billing, Squarespace lists American Express, Diners Club, Discover, JCB, Mastercard and Visa, along with eligible Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link, PayPal and SEPA direct debit. Availability is conditional and not every option appears at every domain checkout. Some documented limits: Discover is USD only, Link is US only, PayPal is for non-US residents only, and SEPA direct debit is only for euro payments by residents using banks in the SEPA zone. Squarespace states it accepts eligible prepaid cards for new payments, but not for past-due invoices; it does not list cryptocurrency as an accepted method.

Because Coinepay does not publish which network or issuing country applies to your specific card, and Squarespace applies currency and region conditions, confirm your card meets any requirement before you rely on it. If you are unsure, contact Coinepay support to check your card details before you buy.

Troubleshooting a declined card

Squarespace shows specific messages when a payment fails. Match the symptom to the likely cause below.

What you seeLikely cause and fix
"Subscription failed"Your bank denied the charge. Check that the card has enough balance for the full first-year price, then retry. In Coinepay, confirm the card is active and top it up if needed.
"Purchase error"Documented when an EEA bank-authorization (3-D Secure) request fails. An EEA-issued card may need bank authentication to complete the purchase. Approve the prompt and retry.
Red warning on the card fieldThe card number is invalid or mistyped. Re-enter the number, expiry and CVV exactly as shown in your Coinepay card details.
Charge keeps failing on retryPossible incorrect expiry/CVC, an unsupported method for your currency, or a billing-address mismatch. Make sure the address on file matches your Coinepay card profile.

Common underlying causes

  • Insufficient balance: load enough to cover the exact total before retrying.
  • Billing address mismatch: the address at Squarespace must match your card's registered address.
  • 3-D Secure / bank authentication: complete any verification prompt; EEA cards in particular may require this.
  • Currency and region conditions: some methods are limited to certain currencies or countries, which can cause an "unsupported method" decline.

If a payment still fails after these checks, review the card's status and recent activity in the Coinepay app, or reach support via the help center or Telegram.

Renewals, auto-renew and cancellation

Domains auto-renew after their registration term, and Squarespace normally charges 15 days before the official renewal date, showing the charge date and price in the domain details. Keep your Coinepay card funded ahead of that date so the renewal doesn't fail. Renewal failures can come from a bank decline, an expired card or insufficient funds; if a domain renewal stays unpaid through the 15-day period, the domain expires and connected services stop working.

Domain billing is managed under Domains dashboard → select domain → Billing → Payment information. A parked or separately billed domain is not updated just by changing a site's card, so update the card on the domain itself. To avoid a future charge, turn off Auto-renew in the domain details. An eligible generic TLD such as .com can be cancelled within five days of initial registration for a full refund (measured to the minute); country-code TLDs have no such grace period, and qualifying refunds can take 3–10 business days.

Stay compliant

Always use your real identity and real billing details at Squarespace. Enter accurate registration contact information, and don't try to work around a product's regional or payment checks. Keeping your details consistent across Coinepay and Squarespace is the simplest way to get a clean approval.

FAQ

Can I pay for a Squarespace domain with a Coinepay virtual card?

You can enter a Coinepay virtual card's number, expiry and CVV at the Squarespace domain checkout like any other card. Squarespace applies its own currency and region conditions and accepts eligible prepaid cards for new payments but not past-due invoices. If you're unsure your card qualifies, contact Coinepay support before you buy.

Do I need a Squarespace website plan to buy a domain?

No. You can register a domain on its own without a website plan; it will use a parking page until you connect it to a site. Website plans (Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced) are optional, though an eligible annual plan includes one eligible domain free for its first year.

Why does Squarespace show 'Purchase error' or 'Subscription failed'?

'Purchase error' is documented when an EEA bank-authorization (3-D Secure) request fails, so complete the bank verification prompt. 'Subscription failed' means your bank denied the charge—check that the card has enough balance and the billing details match, then retry.

How much does a Squarespace domain cost?

Prices depend on the extension, whether the name is premium and the term. At the time of writing (October 2026) Squarespace's FAQ gives US examples like about $20/year for .com or .org, $30 for .photography and $50 for .media. These are examples only—search your exact name on Squarespace and check the renewal price before confirming.

How do I stop my Squarespace domain from renewing on my card?

Open the Domains dashboard, select the domain, and turn off Auto-renew in the domain details. Squarespace normally charges 15 days before the renewal date, so change this ahead of time. Cancelling a website does not by itself stop the domain's auto-renewal.
